Welcome to Broke Magazine, the series where Brake Magazine spends less money to have incredible adventures. Flying, riding, looking, feeling and experiencing incredible things for less than the cost of European city break.
For episode one, we put our money on the table to head to most dramatic place we could afford, India. The goal was the biggest mountains on earth, for just £850. To add extra spice, we wanted it to be accessible, so we bought a beginner, my friend Joe.
The questions are set, but can it be done?

I just got back from 10 days in Ladahk with 3 mates, 1 with almost no riding experience: Nubra Valley, Kardung La, Pangong & Tsomoriri Lakes, the Karakoram Range, camel ride in the world's highest desert. It really was amazing although the altitude was much harder than I expected. We booked with "Motorcycle Escapades" & had a guide, a mechanic and a third bloke driving the backup ute with our bags and an oxygen bottle. Bikes, petrol, accommodation, back up and 2 meals/day all for US$1,250. 1340kms at an average speed of 35 kph. Several near misses on the ever variable roads but I can't recommend it enough. Do it while you can.

I went on a trip to the Himalayas last year and after coming back I wanted to make a how to guide like this as there are so many companies offering tours that cost thousands and I understand why they exist but there are other ways. If you’re prepared to do a bit of research beforehand anyone can do it for a lot less. I had no guide and instead went with my brother. Got to Ladakh, acclimatised, found a good deal on some bikes, asked around for some routes and then we were off.
The major issue that I have found (not in India though) is that western tour companies have set up in lots of countries so when trying to search for a bike to rent online they are offering western bikes for stupid prices and these bikes really have no place in these countries.
Anyway thanks for the video! The community really appreciates it.
    :)
Would be happy to tag along to one of these if you do one again.

I did more or less this trip back in 98. This video captures it incredibly well.
I had similar backtracks due to closed roads. Crazy traffic. Near misses. Weird taxi rides. Unbearable heat. Riding all day to cover just 200 km. Altitude headaches that feel like driving your head into a crack in a rock with a mallet.
I think about that trip every day.

We've got a 7 day trip to the High Atlas mountains in Morocco booked for less than £950 each for flights, bikes and all hotels. Probably another £150 for food and fuel. Marrakech bike hire is very plentiful. We hope to have an adventure as good as yours looked but won't be producing such a good film about it. Well done Joe for completing that trip! Even the easiest multi-day bike trips can be physically, mentally and emotionally draining for anyone never mind a complete beginner.

Don't one and done it if you have the option, there are hundreds of absolutely epic destinations in India, with the South often under appreciated for how adventure friendly it is.

You will be amazed at what little people need to survive. Never ever drink the water and be very/very careful what you eat. The garbage and public sanitation is just terrible. Well done guys, I lived in Delhi for 12 months so I can appreciate the 'Culture Shock' you must have experienced. Loved the film and the route options. I presume you must have taken your helmets as hand luggage and worn some of your riding gear on the plane to keep your hold luggage manageable.

One of the best ride travel videos I’ve seen of late. As ever, just shows you don’t need a twenty grand adventure bike to have an awesome adventure.

Absolutely. Hopefully it also shows, you don't have to ride a C90 to do it on a budget too.

Nice work. I was riding there last month with a group of mates. We avoided the heat and train by flying from Delhi to Leh where we hired bikes. The 15kg weight limit meant we wore our boots and jacket on the plane. Got to ride the 12 highest roads in the world. Air is thin at 5900m. Often chaotic traffic but friendly people.

Another great video! Always a joy to watch and lure! Just a question. Wasn’t a better option to take to the trip the leatt 7,5 airflow garment instead of the multitour? It looked so hot!

Yes. That was a mistake on our part as the weather was vastly different to what was predicted 😂
