Jin Lee is a fun character. He didn't have much presence in the movie but when he did he always improved the scene. It was refreshing to have both parents in an animated film.
I happy that Mei is not an orphan 💀
Just like real dads
Right! We need to keep both parents ALIVE more often! All the movies with both parents are better in my opinion.
Best character in the movie.
I know right. What's up with Disney killing main characters' parent?
Him slowly walking backwards in caution is put into a whole lot of perspective when he knows women in the family turn into red pandas, and his wife's panda is ginormous.
I thought it's because they thought her period started. So, like he's letting Ming to talk to Mei about menstruation since they're both female.
@@lunatalia9109 Could be wrong, but after watching the film, my impression was that as soon as Ming said "that":
* Ming thought she had her first period
* Jin thought she turned into a red panda
that sounds like a euphemism
Wait that makes total sense
Not to mention how casually he’s like “she was big ☺️”
YOU ARE VERY CALM ABOUT YOUR WIFE BEING LITERALLY GODZILLA SIZED WHEN SHES ANGRY
But I love seeing him throughout the film clearly knowing his wife and what she needs at certain times- when she was nervous about telling Mei, when her mom called, when her family was yelling around her, Pixar is getting really good at showing supportive spouses
I like the fact that Jin was the cook of the family, just like my dad. Definitely helped me connect to his character more

Here we see the dad never had the same problem that the mom had, it's just that the mom didn't listened to him and her daughter
Also the crushing disappointment from the grandmother led to her being overwhelmed. Imagine being perfect at mothering and then your child decided not to listen to u.(there’s no wrong parties but it’s just each parties caring too much)

Oh, everything? Time to get a white van.
For any man watching this - please don't subject yourself to be controlled, manipulated, or told what to do for your wife. Hate how men are expected to take whatever is thrown at them. Our society puts this expectation of them. Stand up for yourselves, marry and be with someone who accepts u and doesn't control (even tiny things) about you. That's not true love! Learned so much from many men who have been manipulated/controlled.

My theory is that he's probably going to be the next shaman after Mr. Gao. he seems to know everything that is needed and seems perfectly in tune with it all. He had said he only ever saw Ming's panda once. One time. We don't even known how long they knew each other before getting married. He never saw another one before that but look at how ready he was to get things done. He probably left to the get the chalk before Ming's mother could tell him anything and even told the ladies when to start singing. Either he's going to be the next shaman or he *really* wants his wife back lol not that I blame him.

I kind of have 2 theories why Ming’s mom didn’t approve of Lin
1st theory: this one is pretty unlikely, but maybe when Mei-Mei’s parents were young they might have been rebellious teenagers. And at one point Lin was a bad influence on Ming. ( like I said this theory doesn’t seem right but there is gonna be that moment where parents think a kid’s friend or potential partner isn’t gonna be good enough for them )
Or 2nd: his status, maybe he/his family wasn’t wealthy and Ming’s mom thinks it’s based on his status that he might not be able to provide for Ming and the family
On a side note I adore how in the end of the film Jin becomes a 4*Townie in the basement, reminds me of how my dad got into Kpop after I introduced it to him
i'm leaning towards a possibility where its because he's "average". ming's family pursued excellence and perfection, maybe he wasn't remarkable in any way (not saying by any means he's not worth it, i absolutely loved his character)
Well that sweet of your dad to join you as well
I think both theory, if he was studying aboard at that time through scholars that he had to fight very hard to get because his family was poor (and his family may still have to wrestle with financials because there are no mentioned about them, if they are rich or solved financial problem, grandfathers may visit and lived with Mei). And if that is true, he didn't have much money, so he may considered "poor". And if he had to fight very hard to get the scholar, he was different from other kids because unlike normal or rich children which still not touch to hard works and just study, he had to work to get enough money to simply had breakfast and lunch while studying to get the scholar, its may explained why he is very good at cooking because he may have to do that since he got the scholar. So Jin became "experienced" and thus he may act to adapt and continue to survive, keep working outside of studying time for money to pay for everything by himself. And during that time he met and befriend with many people that still not suitable for his age, or he sympathize and knew their true heart. But by anyway, all of them was enough to judge him as "rebellious" for someone just looked to one side of his story. And if it was not enough, the original from mainland China may made Ming's mom disgust him and want her "perfect" daughter to stay away from him (its maybe 1980s with CCP)
In the process for trying to be a perfect girl, Ming had no friend or her mother didn't allow her to befriend with them (this happened with me in the past so I know how painful it was, you were stripped away almost happy nostalgia to the point that you hardly care about your pass), so she always lonely and became a subject for bullying. That's why Ming was attracted by Jin, because he shown her different aspect of the life, different story and most importantly he sympathized and understood her situation. But most importantly, he became the target for Ming to begin rebel and fight for. But disaster came with that, for many posts about this film I theorize that the panda only emerged if that person believe she is grown up, that's why Mei begin transformation so soon because at the beginning of the film she believe she is adult at 13. And with Ming, Jin became the "push" so Ming believe she cannot live at the same, must grown up to stay with him. By somehow she begin the transformation directly at that moment when her mother rejected Jin and that's explained why she is so big, because the panda was overfed with a surge of raw anger directly from bottle up emotions right on the first time of the transformation.
But how Jin be accepted, maybe 1 - Ming did not care about her mother anymore after traumarizing for hurting her and never want to returned to the old road, so she decided to live with Jin. Its fit the conversation with Mei when she said that her relationship with Ming was not like the same after the incident. Or 2 - Ming''s family realized how deeply Jin was after that incident and after a knowning his full story.
Actually the movie spells out how things were when they were young.
The father was a street vendor who cooked meals for working people. Which is considered an embarrassing profession in modern China. He was very successful but that wasn't enough for Ming's mother. Who wanted her to marry someone with more dignity.
That is partly why Ming got so mad that Mei had fallen in love with Devon. A lowly clerk. Because she had become her own mother in that sense.
They moved to Canada and Jin, the father, still loves to cook. And he teaches her daughter how to make traditional Chinese food.
@@TatankaTaylor Ming's family already in Canada before. The temple is for their bloodline and its contained a lot of people from many generations so at least Ming were born in Canada or outside China. Also Jin said with Mei when transform Ming destroy half of the temple, so maybe Jin from China moved aboard but Ming didn't.
I don't understand why Ming's mom didn't approve of Jin, he seems like such a good man. My guess is she's one of those mom's who'll never approve of anyone her daughter dates.
The fight between Ming and her mom over Jin happened before Ming sealed her panda spirit, so probably while she was still in her teens.
Not many teenage girls would have mothers who could see eye to eye with their boyfriends, I imagine.
I just assumed he was a bad-boy during his adolescence, and now he's learned from his past mistakes.

Yo, my dad was like this and it ruined my parents relationship. (I'm just ranting a bit after this, you don't have to read it).
My mom has a strong personality and is higly sensitive, so my dad never said what he wanted to say and they divorced last year, with my dad admitting he had been sad for a very long time, and my mom not knowing what to do because she really thought they were happy, and couldn't see how her own personality didn't allow space for discussion. Sometimes I wish she had seen it, or that my dad was more honest on his feelings. Because it still fuking sucks today and everyone has trust issues now.👌👌
Hey, just wanna say that I had almost the exact same situation (except they never divorced)
Sad this happened, but I appreciate your acknowledgement of it because it does suck when only one person gets to voice their needs and concerns. Jin is a great dad and person, and I know Ming learned a few lessons from Pandapocalypse 2002 that hopefully helped her with her skills as a partner, not just her motherhood.
Heyo, fellow divorced kid here- I’m so sorry that happened and I also want to let you know your not alone in your feelings of wishing your parents were just able to be more trusting and open w/ their feelings. But coming from that environment It was really eye opening seeing the sheer amount of support that Jin and Ming gave Mei, and also their struggles in trying to come to terms with their own feelings and opening up and accepting each other, this movie is probably one of the most healthiest portrayals of gradually opening up in those Asian immigrant values of perfection leading to self worth that I’ve seen in television so far (which is funny because it took the pandacolypse for that to happen) it’s inspiring seeing someone like Jin, especially from a father standpoint, give that beautiful support to Mei by validating her feelings and paying attention when she needed that care from the rest of the family
I know how it feels. I'm much closer to my dad- something about oldest daughter tend to be the female version of the dad- and the way we carry ourselves were similar, so I understand his love language. But in retrospect, I clash with my mother so often because our personality is different. After hearing news of divorce from my mom, my dad come to me later and said he still loves her. However, communication weren't going through well and things clearly aren't working between them.
The only difference to our story is that my dad passed away before the divorce was finalized, and my mom told me she didn't want to remarry and grieved terribly. The irony of it all. I missed him everyday.
In Scandinavia and germany we have a term called tøffelhelt (slipper hero), where the wife is in command of the house. I know of a guy that was like that and followed all the wife's command and she controlled his finances, sadly she moved on and now he lives in a small rented apartment
He was okay with his daughter being a panda- snuck Tim Hortons when his wife wasn’t looking, backed away realizing he had nothing to give to the “red peony” conversation- saved his daughters comfort toy!!!! loves his daughter even when she was a giant red panda, even if she doesn’t want to get rid of it! And is just happy to see his daughter happy!!! And was the only one ho told Ming it was okay/ everything would be okay
And he was ready to get Ming’s circle done! Like when grandma asked where Jin was he was 2/3s done with the circle by somehow breaking and entering into a shed ??
Also let’s appreciate the fact a 15/16 Jin saw his GF turn into a Kaiju red panda and said , “yeah that’s the woman Im going to marry…”

He's so cute. I just want to give him a hug.
1:00 i love the way he slowly backs away. definitely something my dad would do
Despite having very few lines in the movie and very soft spoken, he's so very supportive on Mei-Mei's decisions and the things she's doing.
Yup. The few lines he does have are absolutely on point.
2:15 glasses owners didn't like that
Aww... poor guy... always shoved off to the sidelines... even when he's showing compassion to his daughter.
