I got pregnant two months after marrying my husband. I became a stay at home mom. We had three kids of our own and adopted a friend’s son when she died. I drove the kids to and from school, dance, gymnastics, soccer, and baseball. I cooked, cleaned, shopped, sewed clothes and gardened. We had a joint bank account. We’ve been married for 47 years and haven’t argued about money, other things yes, but not money.

After meeting his judgmental family and he didn't support her, why would OP "happily" accept his proposal? I would have left as soon as he proved that he would never support me against his family.

If you live in a house you own through inheritance, why would you need to worry about rent?
Op you need a better husband!

The first visit, first question about finances, I’d have answered “Well that’s really none of your business”. When the questions continued I’d have responded “As I said that’s none of your bloody business. Now unless you intend to lay your finances out for me to examine, I’d suggest you shut up”. Any further remarks and I’d have left the house and spent the night at a hotel.

I also wonder a lot, when I read these stupid stories; why does everybody know about people’s finances? I can guarantee you people do not know about my finances!! 🤷‍♀️🤣

What you should've said to your mil when she criticized you when you were spending your own money was "Was it being paid for by you"? I know it sounds harsh but if she wasn't paying for it then she really didn't have the right to criticize costs.

You were foolish for continuing with the relationship. No sympathy for you
