One of Madness's true anthems, 'Baggy Trousers' captured the imagination of kids and parents all over the UK when it was released in 1980. The video, which begins with that unmistakable "thing-a-ling-a-ling", finds Madness back at school remembering the fun they had. According to the song all Madness learned at school was "how to bend, not break the rules" and they've been doing it ever since.
    Lyrics:
    Naughty boys in nasty schools
    Headmasters breaking all the rules
    Having fun and playing fools
    Smashing up the woodwork tools
All the teachers in the pub
    Passing 'round the ready-rub
Trying not to think of when
The lunch-time bell will ring again.
    Oh what fun we had
But, did it really turn out bad
    All I learnt at school
Was how to bend not break the rules
    Oh what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
    Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days.
    Headmaster's had enough to-day
All the kids have gone away
Gone to fight with next-door's school
Every term, that is the rule
Sits alone and bends his cane
    Same old backsides again
All the small ones tell tall tales
    Walking home and squashing snails.
    Oh what fun we had
But, did it really turn out bad
    All I learnt at school
Was how to bend not break the rules
    Oh what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
    Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days.
Lots of girls and lots of boys
Lots of smells and lots of noise
    Playing football in the park
    Kicking push bikes after dark
    Baggy trousers, dirty shirt
    Pulling hair and eating dirt
Teacher comes to break it up
Back of the 'ead with a plastic cup.
    Oh what fun we had
But, did it really turn out bad
    All I learnt at school
Was how to bend not break the rules
    Oh what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
    Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days.
Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers
Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers

In the interview linked here ( czcams.com/video/d92AZ4Zypdc/video.htmlsi=0VhwTouWVtxw4kXr&t=610 ), Chris Foreman, guitar, talks about the Baggy Trousers video. Apparently, Lee Thompson, sax, wanted to have dummies flying but it ended up with just him on a wire... and Suggs' reaction reflects genuine fun/amazement. Overall, this is a fun interview with Chris and people might want to start from the beginning of Part 1 of the interview.

The music video of the song was shot in Kentish Town in north west London: at the Kentish Town C of E primary school on Islip Street and the Peckwater Estate. The band's saxophone player, Lee Thompson decided he wanted to fly through the air for his solo, with the use of wires hanging from a crane.

Except it's not baggy trousers anymore, it's stupidly tight trousers that taper at the ankles. They're the in-thing now. Won't find me wearing them though. Back when I was in secondary school in the 2000's, I wore a hand me down pair of Levi's that were about two sizes too big for me. A bloke who was a punk rocker in the 80's said I looked like a luddite in them. Good times 😂
