Buster Keaton was one of the most influential and innovative comedians of the silent film era. He was known for his deadpan expression, his physical agility and his daring stunts. One of his lesser-known but still remarkable short films is The Paleface (1922), directed by Keaton and Edward F. Cline.
The Paleface is a comedy western that parodies the stereotypes of Native Americans and white settlers. The plot revolves around a butterfly collector (Keaton) who accidentally wanders into an Indian camp and is sentenced to death. However, he manages to escape and impress the Indians with his fireproof underwear, made of asbestos. He becomes their chief and helps them defend their land from a group of greedy oil barons.
The film is full of hilarious gags and impressive stunts, such as Keaton being tied to a stake and set on fire, Keaton riding a horse backwards, Keaton jumping off a cliff into a river, and Keaton fighting with the oilmen using a bow and arrow, a tomahawk and a rifle. The film also features some clever visual tricks, such as Keaton hiding behind a thin tree trunk, Keaton using his butterfly net as a parachute, and Keaton switching clothes with the leader of the oilmen.
The Paleface is a testament to Keaton's genius as a filmmaker and a performer. He was not only able to create funny situations, but also to execute them with precision and skill. He did most of his own stunts, without the use of stunt doubles or special effects. He also had a keen sense of timing, rhythm and editing. He was able to tell a story without words, using only gestures, expressions and actions.
