Hi budy, i'm frm Brazil and leav in Portugal. I loved this videos . Thanks for this teach.
Glad you liked it!
I've got food grade beeswax and mineral oil sitting in the barn for over a year now, procrastinating on making a cutting board finish. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. Thank you! ...I'd might try this on my next set of knife scales also!!
Yes! that's awesome i really hope you do! feel free to let me know how it turns out, thanks for watching!
That looks great! Just make sure to mention that there is coconut oil in the finish, since lots of people are allergic to tree nuts.
hmmm, thanks for the heads up! on my labels ill put that it contains coconut oil from now on... much appreciated my friend!
A coconut is not a nut. It is not a tree nut. Its technical term is a drupe.
With my research, tree nut allergies are different from peanut allergies and the two do not coincide. The amount of people who are allergic to tree nuts is a very small percentage compared to peanuts. Though labeling the finish as containing tree nut oil, is wise.
I have tried to mix beeswax, tung oil and linseed oil which came out very nice. I will try your formula to compare. Thanks
thanks for letting me know if i get around to trying different variations ill will for sure try those for sure, i have been using this mix for quite some time and its been amazing, really easy to use and really inexpensive
Perfect just what I was looking for. I wanted to put coconut oil in my mixture and no harsh chemicals. I plan on using it on my cold ceramic planter pots. So you can see I don't want my plants to die from the wrong ingredient in the mix. Thanks for sharing this. I appreciate it.
awesome! thank you :)
@@NewClassicDesigns it looks like it will work perfectly. I just can't find my carnauba wax. I'd like to test with some of that. But I'm sending the pots to a friend to test the pots with her plants. Thank you again for sharing this.
@@VickyShawcooksalot vary cool! please feel free to share how it turned out :)
@NewClassicDesigns I made it with just the beeswax, mineral oil, and coconut oil. The mix was 24 g, 48 g, and 48 g. Water beads right off. Gives them a nice shiny finish too. Oh, and I added a few drops of lemon essential oil. And it fits perfectly in a Oui yogurt glass. Thanks again for doing the hard part and sharing it. 😊
I’ve been using Odle Oil for a long time but at $54 for a small bottle I’m all in on your recipient. Thanks for your insight!
Odies Oil is amazing, i used it all the time but you're right its super expensive and really difficult to work into wood, that's why i made this one i did a bunch of research and put this one together, it's way cheaper to make and you'll find this mix gives you an amazing finish and its so easy to work into your projects. thanks for watching, let me know how it works out for you 👍
Are these types of finishes good for furniture other than tabletops?
@@patrickmorrissey2582 yes they are :)
👍👍👍👍👍
I used bar oil because home depot had no mineral oil. It had some red in it, but it just darkened up my maple to something like an oak. Before anyone goes mental about food safety I am using it for a quarterstaff and it's meant to hurt. It looks good doing damage though, nice.
vary cool! i never considered trying something to give it a dark tone, sounds like a really cool idea thank you!
If you add diatomaceous earth you will have created an abrasive paste to match Yorkshire Grit and much cheaper.
I'll be trying this on a turning; can't imagine it not working on a spinning piece.
I put it on a dowel and it worked very well.
that's awesome! thank you for keeping me posted! if you try it on other stuff please feel free to let me know :)@@markschroter2640
I have a suggestion for you. I made a mixture of beeswax and jojoba oil. At 1:4 or 20% beeswax. Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax.
I used nothing else. Try it on your tablesaw as well. 😊
much appreciated! next time i have to make a batch ill try it out, thanks!
@@NewClassicDesigns When you do, I'd like to know how you like it. You're welcome.
The three ingredients I use in my polish are beeswax, carnubia wax and orange oil., food safe and nice smell, use a lot less of the carnubia about 25% of the beeswax amount.
awesome that sounds like a great combo, vary clever i have to admit :)
what kind of coconut oil did you use? I am pretty sure some types go rotten. I think it needs be fractured coconut oil but am not sure. do you kn ow?
yup, it's the one from Costco called kirkland organic virgin coconut oil... I've been using this one for well over a year and half in this mix and it hasn't giving me any problem... i hope that helps :)
Can I use it on concrete? I am making concrete masterpieces and I want to put a waterproofing on it .Thank you for sharing this
it can be used anywhere really, if you were making a half wood half concrete piece for sure! But if its only or mostly concrete it might be a bit pricey to use. there are some really good concrete sealers you can get from any box store in the paint section that are really inexpensive... thanks for watching and please let me know how your masterpiece turns out!
After having a jar of coconut oil go rancid , I would not use it in any wood finish. Don't know if you could get the smell and mold out of the wood if it goes bad.
Also I don't know about lemon juice. Fresh lemon juice is only good for about 5 days in the fridge.
hmm, I'm sorry to hear that, but I've been using this coconut oil mixture for well over a year now, and have sold dozens of boards with it and have not had any issues or complaints with it. Perhaps your coconut oil was mixed with something in it? the kind I use is pure and doesn't need to be refrigerated... Thank you for your concern
JUst an opinion, some coconut oils will go rancid so I would be cautious.
Does coconut oil go rancid on cutting board?
You should not use any type of cooking oil on your board, such as olive oil, vegetable oil, or regular coconut oil, because they will go rancid. Also keep in mind that excess moisture is bad for wood.
i absolutely know what you mean, but coconut oil like mineral oil as long as it's not cooked has an indefinite shelf life even cooking oils (like olive oil and vegetable oil) as long they haven't been cooked can stay un-refrigerated. i would never use those types of oils due to the fact that they are better options that are just as easy to find. I am however playing around with some new combinations thanks to some great suggestions on here... thanks for the input 👍
Fractionated coconut oil should be fine
Why didn’t you weigh each ingredient so you know precisely how you made the best product
I love that board. Do you sell and ship to Australia.
Would Essential oil be better than fresh lemon?
originally i just decided to make it i with out the intention of using more then any other finish but the result was so awesome i decided to use it for everything, you are right how ever i should come up with a more precise way to put it all together it.
I really appreciate you like the board i do have an Etsy shop that was recently sold out but ill have a new stock up shortly
the idea for me to use this was to have pretty easy items to find to make this but moving to an essential oil rather then the lemon sounds like a good idea, ill look into thank you vary much :)
So 40% BeesWax: 40% Coconut Oil: 20% Mineral Oil and half or full lemon
to be honest you don't need the lemon if you don't want to put it in, it wont hurt it if you decide to use it but i found it really wasn't making any difference with out it so my new batches don't have it in it but the original boards i use it on are still perfect so if you want to use it, its totally up to you but you only need a little in there :) thanks for watching :)
"After watching, if you have any suggestions"
Don't use epoxy in any board for cutting.
lol i hear ya my friend, but my videos are for charcuterie boards not cutting boards, I'm afraid i can't help it if people don't know the difference... thanks for watching :)
@@NewClassicDesigns I'll 'fess up: I wasn't aware of the difference. And on a certain huge retailer such boards are sold as "charcuterie/cutting board". I personally wouldn't like eating food placed on epoxy anyway but at least if there's no cutting there's less toxicity.
@@passerby6168 well, you do bring up a good point. I don't have many charcuterie board videos left to do but I'll be sure to make a mention of it in the future, thanks for the heads up :)
Thank you I thought what a beautiful chopping board now I won’t follow up to buy one.
Mineral oil what's that.
It's one of the most basic kinds of oil, it's odorless and tasteless, that's why a lot of woodworkers use it. It's also very easy to find and use
