Other videos only show the roots you plant, then talk and talk about how to not cut it for a while, but don't show the progression of the ferns and how the asparagus pop out of the ground. @@chelseacavener7848 harvested this year a bit, I would say about 2-3lbs, they are completely covering the 2 rows now! Next spring I will definitely chop everything back for a full 8 weeks and I expect it to be a good 5-10lbs; they are doing well where they are even though the drainage is less than adequate.(although i have seen wild ones on river banks, roots completely submersed, so I haven’t yet noticed an issue besides rapid growth & juicy stalks)
Got bored and started 150 baby asparagus which I’ve also planted in a few more rows around the area, they are all about 2-5 shoots 1-3ft tall (7 months old)
Definitely worth planting these either seedling or bare root, ASAP.
(Highly recommend planting in an area with 12-16” of loose/well drained soil, with bottom most area being organic matter/moisture retention, the roots on these seemed to have been super deep this summer, while everything else was wilting due to shallow root system, these still had access to water, do not plant in clay soils, just make a little 2x10 raised bed for them, turn the soil 16” down and they’ll do great.
Any specific questions feel free to ask I will try my best to help!
Super slow gro-ing, you should do this early in the spring before all of your other garden projects to distract from the time they take to get a reasonable size, I find if you get 2 year old bare roots; the first year in being completely left alone will provide enough energy to produce a full set year 2 of being planted, and your second harvest in spring 3 will be more than sufficient, provided you don’t plant just 1-2 plants.
Also I would highly recommend doubling the total plant count if you are planting for a family, etc.
I myself would only eat once/week for 8 weeks with this amount of plants, maybe twice, next year for sure 2x/week with this many.

I definitely wouldn't put more than one plant in each bag. Asparagus develops a huge underground crown so you don't want too many plants in such a small space. But if you're happy with very thin spears, and why not, then it's probably ok to crowd them in together. The advantages of growimg in containers is that asparagus can live up to 20 years so taking up a bed for a long time. Also weeding in a bed can be hard compared to a localised container. BTW asparagus seed is very vigorous and sprouts readily in Spring. Transplant to position when about 6-8 inches high. Spread out its cute little roots and give it about two feet space between each plant

You will know when to cut the ferns to ground level when they turn brown and die in winter. After cutting them, weed, fertilise and mulch the bed or container. You can pick for 3 months in spring then allow the subsequent spears to grow into ferns so the crown is replenished. When they die cut them back again and so the cycle goes on. He won't be harvesting long. Asparagus crowns need TONS of room. They can spread to 15 ft deep and that's partly why asparagus is so nutritious. It gets lots of minerals from deep in the ground. Misleading content like this is frustrating.

It takes an asparagus a minimum of 3 years to mature before you can harvest if you harvest a little bit that comes up in the second year you will hurt your plan it will not produce so much nor will it last up to 20 years please don't harvest the second year just cut them down.

I thought asparagus took a few years to grow as well? Asparagus is a healthy food and would really like to know.. how sturdy of a bag and how long was growing time before first harvest?

You can get a vegetable your first season from seed?

Wait until the seedling is about 8 inches tall. Transplant to permanent position, spreading out its little roots. You can pick a few spears after one or two years but allow most of the spears to grow to ferns for the first three years to allow the underground crown to grow. The seed sprouts readily in spring.
