    The last evidence of "the beard"....
    FAQ:
    *“Is the green foam like floral foam?”*
    NO! Totally different. Avoid floral foam for crafting at all costs. Terrible stuff that causes rashes and respiratory problems. It’s also way too brittle to hold up as terrain. The pink and green foams shown here are both XPS, just different densities from different manufacturers.
    *"What about balsa foam?"*
    I have never worked with balsa foam. Looking into it it seems there are varieties available that would probably be ideal for impression carving, however it's not an appropriate material for me as balsa foam can not be machined with hotwire tools which is vital for breaking down material and creating desired thicknesses.

    Its really cool to see the different ways everyone approaches your type of foam. Although I use a different type of foam than both of you I can appreciate the work you do on your side a bit more now that I can see its not as easy to carve as Gerald's. Of course I can't use those tools at all on EVA but have to depend on an exacto knife, or other methods with heat to give all my texturing. Sometimes, I wish I could just draw out my textures with a pencil and call it a day but I'm apparently too suborn. I'll leave the hard foams to your mastery.

    This is going to get lost in the 208 comments but here it goes - In the hovercraft groups there were a couple of foams used. The main was the pink/blue. It was used for flotation because it was closed cell, a safety requirement in case the hovercraft stopped hovering. The foam wouldn't suck up water and sink.
    There were yellow and green foams that were used above the water line because they were open cell. The yellow was a urethane based foam and could be worked using wood tools. A big but - The dust and hotwire smoke was really toxic!!. The green stuff a little softer and was a special order from Menards but Home Depot had it in stock at some stores. This was 10 years.
    Love the videos. Thanks for making them. Really, thanks.

    Found your channel the other day and wanted to try some of the builds. Being a tile installer, I work with a foam board called Kerdi board to build shower walls, etc. I always have remnants left over and thought I'd experiment. It's made by Shluter, a German company, so I figure it's close to the same foam Gerard is using. It does have a waterproof fabric layer that I had to peel off first, but no biggie. It worked amazingly for everything I created! I used a pen for my brick and wood designs and it took hardly any effort to imprint the designs. You can purchase it from Home Depot....but it's pretty expensive, ( usually $100 for a 4'x8' sheet of half inch.) It comes in 1/4 inch, 1/2, and 2 inch thickness. Now I have an infinite supply of free remnants to craft amazing settings for D&D, war games...anything. Shluter also makes an adhesive that fits a caulk gun called Kerdi fix. It's made specifically to attach the foam board together...and let me tell you, It's strong stuff! I use it in construction in the place of Liquid Nails. Just thought I'd chime in and tell you thanks for the ideas. Keep up the good work!

      I’m an ex contractor that did high end renovations (before CZcams). I’ve done MANY Schluter based shower installs (actually specialized in barrier free showers) so I know Kerdi board very well 🙂
      I actually never bothered using it for crafting though, and thinking about it, it’s a good option if you have cut offs. Way too expensive vs XPS to buy just for crafting though.

    Was introduced to Shifting Lands and Gerard through BMC's videos. I purchased items from Gerard and the process was simple and speaking with Gerard about my order was quick, professional and an absolute pleasure. Would definitely buy from Gerard again. Great video as always!

    This comparison of foams is probably the best video you made. We really live in different countries, and have different materials. Like me for example. I have never seen pink foam in my life. And thinnest that I can get is 30mm and thickest is 100mm I believe.
    Great video and very informative!! And Prost to Gerard ;-)

    So ive watched this video twice and both times ive ended up on the edge of my chair going, "yeah, yeah, ok, yeah". This is sublime terrain porn. Gerard is great and i love seeing his technique. The way you 2 worked together was "Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers singing "Islands in the Stream" smooth. The whole video is just YESSSSS. Thanks! *turns the video on again*

    I have bought Gerard's book and its incredibly detailed with very good descriptions of all the materials and the pictures are very detailed aswel. I got my foamcutter (the famous Proxxon) about a week ago and made my first build (The Ruined Moseleum, page 58). Which can use more practice but all by all a good build, considering I don't have all my tools and equipment yet from Shiftinglands. I only have the pink foam here in Belgium, so It would be great if I knew where to buy the green foam? Thanks in advance and thanks for making this video! Warm greetz, all the way from Belgium. ♥

  • @gluuuuue

    Pink Foamular is a closed-cell XPS (according to Owens Corning), which probably contributes to its greater elasticity. I didn't see it listed on BAMF's data, but the rigidity of Styrodur CS3000's XPS sounds like it's open-cell. As others have suggested, the closest approximation we may have might be some floral foams, but I've found floral foams to shed a lot of crumbs from being perhaps too rigid, just from handling. I'm not sure if there are variations of floral foam that suffer from this problem less.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  Před 5 lety +1

      Avoid floral foam for crafting at all costs. Terrible stuff that causes rashes and respiratory problems. It’s also way too soft to hold up as terrain.

    Was it just me or did this video have more energy? Seemed like Gerard’s visit was really inspirational to Jeremy and the dynamic was really great between them. Felt like some of that energy was shared while watching this video! All the information seemed to come through loud and clear. Again, it might just be my perception, but this seemed to put some of the old excitement and energy in you Jeremy. Looks good on you👍🏻 Keep up the good work man..... and yeah a marathon build session with you both would be EPIC!

    This episode made me so happy! I am extremely new to foam crafting, I came across your channel by chance in June, because I wanted to use blue foam for a sculpture project for my college class, but never used it before. I was absolutely fascinated by the things you could make with this stuff! I am familiar with cardboard, chipboard and foamcore for making traditional architectural models, but I like straight foam crafting WAY better!
    Over the summer, I wanted to try my hand at a simple foam structure, but I didn’t have the means to get a hot wire cutter and build it up like you do... I had some scratchboard foam sheets from the after school program where I teach and thought maybe I could scratch the texture into it. It actually worked pretty well! I made my base structure out of cardboard and glued the scratchboard wall pieces on top after I textured and painted them. I designed an old brick factory and drew graffiti all over the walls. It’s not perfect, but I was very happy with it and I can’t wait to make my next model! Now I see this foam sheet layering method can really get fancy if you know how to do it!
    I highly recommend trying foam scratchboard in combination with what you already use, and I’m going to start combining techniques! For example, If you carve a grid of rectangles into the scratchboard and then use modpodge + silver paint, you get some really cool looking metal sheet panels! Thank you both so much for the inspiring and super informative content! I love this channel so much, and I am definitely going to subscribe to the other channel as well! 😄👍🏾

    Superb video. Thank you to both of you. The pipe Gerard refers to looks like PVC pipe, not the ABS stuff that Jeremy mentioned. The difference is that the ABS pipe is thinner walled and harder material. The PVC is thick and relatively soft, so easier for carving out.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  Před 5 lety

      Yes. As we said he used PVC. I suggested ABS as an alternative because off the shelf it usually is thicker and is softer, so easier to carve. PVC pipe tends to be thinner walled and more brittle.

Don't get me wrong, I love all of your vids, but seeing two people collaborate in such a way is absolutely wonderful. I've learned so much, and while I don't build anything, I feel like I've gained valuable knowledge for working with other materials--strictly from a problem solving perspective. Thanks to both of you for this!

    Great video guys. I know of a product that may be closer to the BASF foam here in the states. It's called fan fold insulation, and comes in pink or blue. The only way it's sold is in big packs and runs about $50. I work at a building supply chain and have tried both this type and the regular foam and the fan fold has way more flex to it. The thicker ridged foam almost has a skin that the fan fold doesn't. Just thought I would put this out there for anyone who wants to try it.
