How to Say "Please" in Chinese?

No.1 请 qǐng
This is the most common word in Chinese for courtesy. For instance,
Please sit.
请坐。
Qǐng zuò.
Please don’t talk.
请不要说话。
Qǐng bú yào shuōhuà.
This way, please.
请这边走。
Qǐng zhè biān zǒu.
Please do me a favour.
请帮我一个忙。
Qǐng bāng wǒ yí ge máng.
No.2 麻烦 máfan
麻烦 originally means “trouble” .
麻 is a general term for hemp, flax etc. 烦 means annoying. It’s believed that this word is created because of the complicated paper making technique in olden days.
Now, 麻烦is also a common word for courtesy. When you want to ask others to do you a favour, apart from 请, you can also use the word “麻烦”, for instance,
Could you please do me a favour?
麻烦帮我一个忙，可以吗？
Máfan bāng wǒ yí ge máng，kěyǐ ma？
Would you please register your name? Thank you!
麻烦你登记一下姓名，谢谢!
Máfan nǐ dēngjì yí xià xìngmíng，xièxie!
