Nació el 28 de septiembre de 1927 en Tehuacán, Puebla, y falleció el 3 de marzo de 2012 en la Ciudad de México.
Estudió violonchelo con Francisco Reyna en la Escuela Nacional de Música de la UNAM y fue timbalista de la orquesta de esa misma escuela. En París estudió composición con Jean Rivier; análisis musical con
Olivier Messiaen; contrapunto con Georges Dandelot; y música coral con Nadia Boulanger. En México estudió con Imre Hartman, Rodolfo Halffter, Blas Galindo y Luis Guzmán. Asimismo, realizó estudios de composición en La Escuela Julliard en Nueva York, donde tuvo como maestros a William Bergsma y Vincent Persichetti.
Su catálogo incluye música de cámara, orquestal y vocal; además de ballets, música para cine, teatro y otros medios. Obtuvo diversos reconocimientos, entre los que destacan el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes, el doctorado honoris causa por la UNAM, la Medalla Mozart y la Medalla de Oro de Bellas Artes. Su música para cine fue galardonada con los premios Ariel y la Diosa de Plata.

Fue mi primer cuarteto para cuerdas, compuesto en 1988 como encargo del Departamento de Música de Difusión Cultural de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y revisado en 1995.
Su estreno tuvo lugar en julio de 1988, interpretado por el Cuarteto Dankwart. En cierto sentido, esta obra se debe a mi admiración por el Cuarteto Latinoamericano.
La forma del cuarteto es muy libre. Aunque está escrito en un solo movimiento, consiste en una serie de ideas contrastantes que van apareciendo como los distintos estados de ánimo de un personaje. Algunas secciones están escritas en forma fija y otras dejan cierta libertad a los ejecutantes por lo que toca al tempo y las duraciones. El lenguaje armónico es algo disonante y es posible que quien lo escuche pueda percibir en ciertas partes un resabio del nacionalismo mexicano no folklorizante.

He was born on September 28, 1927 in Tehuacán, Puebla, and died on March 3, 2012 in Mexico City.
He studied cello with Francisco Reyna at the UNAM National School of Music and was a timpanist in the same school's orchestra. In Paris he studied composition with Jean Rivier; musical analysis with
Olivier Messiaen counterpoint with Georges Dandelot; and choral music with Nadia Boulanger. In Mexico he studied with Imre Hartman, Rodolfo Halffter, Blas Galindo and Luis Guzmán. Likewise, he studied composition at The Julliard School in New York, where he had William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti as teachers.
His catalog includes chamber, orchestral and vocal music; as well as ballets, music for film, theater and other media. He obtained various recognitions, among which the National Prize for Sciences and Arts, the honorary doctorate from the UNAM, the Mozart Medal and the Gold Medal for Fine Arts stand out. His music for films was awarded the Ariel and the Silver Goddess awards.

It was my first string quartet, composed in 1988 as commissioned by the Department of Cultural Diffusion Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and revised in 1995.
Its premiere took place in July 1988, performed by the Dankwart Quartet. In a certain sense, this work is due to my admiration for the Latin American Quartet.
The quartet form is very free. Although it is written in a single movement, it consists of a series of contrasting ideas that appear like the different moods of a character. Some sections are written in a fixed form and others leave some freedom to the performers regarding tempo and durations. The harmonic language is somewhat dissonant and it is possible that whoever listens to it may perceive in certain parts a trace of non-folklorizing Mexican nationalism.
