( www.TFLtruck.com ) This 2014 Honda Ridgeline is based on the same platform as the Pilot SUV, and many people dismiss it as not being a "real" truck. Still, if you're an adventurous type and you need a practical vehicle, is the Ridgeline all you actually need? Here's why Henle bought his and what he thinks of the Honda's truck.

Do I want a transmission that needs to be flushed every 20 miles? No.
Do I want to change a timing belt because Honda is too cheap to make a chain design? No.
Do I want the same fuel economy as a half ton that weighs 1500 lbs more and has 150 more HP? No.
Do I want the heat shield to rip off every time I drive through deep snow (likely came from the Van parts bin)? No.
Do I want to tilt the engine to change the tensioner since Honda jammed it along the frame rails? No.
Did Honda improve the pickup design or were they just too cheap to develop their own pickup chassis? Buy one and answer the question yourself. I already did that.

I agree with alot to what you have said. Problem is Honda 3.5 and Honda Automatic transmission. If you baby it, it will last a very very very long time. If you drive it, tow with it, haul with it probability of having one or both go out seems to get higher. Alot of plastic components that used to me metal in the 3.5. Also the automatic transmission mated to the 3.5 is not duly made for the amount of horsepower produced from the engine. Just my opinion, love the truck just want and expext more from Honda

If you look at the first Generation NSX that transmission was stout they designed it to withstand high HP all the time. This truck is what 75% of what most people need and use in a truck. We have been brainwashed here in America to think that we need big gas guzzling V8s to make us feel like real men. I have seen my neighbor use his big truck once in 6yrs for actual truck work. Once.

Here's the thing. My F-150 with the 2.7 only gives up 2 MPG overall to the Ridgeline in the real world according to Fuelly, has WAY more space, capability, and power, and cost roughly the same on the lot because Ford deals and Honda doesn't. I'd say midsize truck buyers are, for the most part, far more brainwashed because they usually assume they are paying a lot less and getting significantly better economy. That's just not the case though.

      Spot on!
It is funny how little some people understand their actual towing needs. I own an 18 ft bunkhouse camper that sleeps 6 between the bunks, dinette, and queen bed. It weighs a whopping 3850lbs fully loaded, and only 2700 unloaded. If we had wanted to max out (accounting for the weights my wife, myself, and the kids and gear outside the loaded camper) we could have gone with the 25ft model. I pull a 1975 Starcraft aluminum hull cruising/ski boat that is 18 feet long with a 140hp inboard motor, it weighs in at about 3600lbs empty (incl trailer), and still less than 5000lbs towing when loaded with gear. A couple of UTVs on a trailer are also less than the max weight (an example, Honda Pioneer 1000 Deluxe weighs 1567lbs, so call it 3200lbs for 2, plus trailer weight, and you are still under 5000lbs).
As you stated, it wouldn't serve you with an 8000lb camper, but for others, it absolutely would meet or exceed their actual towing needs, as it does mine. I think the reason so many people think 5000lbs isn't enough towing capacity is because they are used to needing the capability of a half ton in order to haul their mothers!

The new one is styled for soccer moms, the interior got smaller, and the bed is so shallow that you can't fit much of anything under a tonneau cover.
Honda has a good idea here but they have yet to put together a complete package that appeals to the majority of truck buyers. Most car companies are building for the "need to tow/haul things with a lot of power" market, whereas Honda is trying to go the approach of "I need a truck but don't need one either" approach. It seems like a smaller market at the moment, but surprisingly there are so many people that don't need a truck but only need that capability once in a blue moon, so there is a lot of potential for that market to grow, and I think this is what Honda is trying to do, and Ford is not too far behind them with their Maverick truck that's been floating around on the web occassionally.

  • @dumbestbiscuit
    @dumbestbiscuit Před 3 lety +1

Amazing how many people make fun of this in comments, though the vast majority are positive. I see a lot of trucks here in Texas, and 2/3 of them are for show. If you are a suburbia type who has someone else mow your lawn, trim your trees, fix your fence, plant your bushes, and so on then you probably shouldn't be talking about trucks. You really don't need to buy a gas sucking truck to pick up your 75" big screen, you can have it delivered for about 80 bucks.
For the rest of us who sometimes haul mulch, throw a mower / weedeater / water hoses etc in the back to take care of our parents, haul and put down our own sod or haul fence boards and paint on occasion, this is perfect. The under bed storage is great when you need to throw in some gas cans or tools and don't want to mess up the interior. I've had mine for about 18 months, only "mod" I've done is to replace the stereo with a touchscreen one that has Apple CarPlay and hooked up the existing backup cam so it uses the larger screen.
My only complaint is gas mileage, though that is a general complaint about trucks - this one doesn't do horribly in real life. I'm getting better than the EPA rating with an avg around 18MPG. I can get 21-22 on the highway at 70-75mph. That is actually about as good as the new fuel efficient 4WD full size trucks, a couple mpg below the new 2WD full size trucks. It's about 1-3mpg below the new 4WD Ridgeline though.
These trucks are rated a 5 on reliability by Consumer Reports - the highest rating. I have had zero problems so far.
I am seeing that most of these will make it to the 200K mile mark without much trouble. Some have gotten close to 400K miles.

Very nice RL sport. The RL doesn't get lots of credit in creating a niche on its own. Not many people need body on frame etc.. Ive know several truck owners that doesn't even off road their lifted 4x4s. Let alone tow. Next mod for you to pickup is a sprint booster. I installed one on my 17 RTL. Night and day diff with throttle response. I have a youtube vid on my installation.

When big SUVs were all the rage 15 to 20 years ago, they were more than what most people really needed. They fell out of favor when fuel prices skyrocketed. Some people who were driving Suburbans and Expeditions back then are now driving CRVs and Outbacks. The RL is a nice compromise. Although not as capable as a half-ton pickup, it is capable and roomy enough for most people.

I traded it for a 15 Wrangler JK, so I got worst mpg, could tow less, and had less room. So went from practical to a lifestyle vehicle. But that gave me the off road bug and took me to some amazing places the Pilot or Ridgeline could not. I then bought a 18 JLU but had reliability issues, now have a 19 4Runner and love it so far. The trunk and tailgates on these trucks is just killer. Something the big 3 are just coming to realize. I think the bed on this truck is better than the new Rambox and I think thats the best feature of the big 3 trucks. Sure the Ridgeline can't tow as much as some body on frame trucks but if you're not towiing 6000+ loads these are fantastic vehicles (if you get a transmision cooler for them). If you don't want to call it a truck but an SuV with a bed fine. Id take it over most SUVs out there including a jeep. Its got more room, much better cargo options and frankly most of us don't go rock crawling so the 4x4 (especially the olders models like this) is by far more than sufficient.
I love my Seirra. My only grip about the old Rodgeline is that it looks too much like an Avalanch and I hate the side "thingies" on the bed. If for some reason I do decide to get rid of my Seirra and Ridgeline would definatly be on my list cause while GM has definatly gone in an upward trend in quality in the past 6 years IMO especially with their interiors. I have to admit all the belly aching you hear about engine and transmission issues makes me nervous.
Note factory recalls don't bother me. I work in Manufacturing so everything has issues. Its after warranty stuff that shouldn't creep up but does that bugs me.

Yes this is my favorite tailgate. RamBox makes for a cramped bed. The new GM tailgates are gimmicks. Ram's new tailgate is OK, I'd prefer it opened in one piece like this one but maybe that's just too long and heavy on a full size.

Thank you for your very honest video about your "truck". It tells everyone who sees it that you are EXACTLY the kind of person that this vehicle is built for. Who is that, you ask?
The person who almost NEVER does any towing, RARELY drives off-road, and whose needs for hauling are almost ALWAYS under 1200 pounds of payload. This is a personal use CUV (crossover utility vehicle, like the Pilot it is based on) with an open-back cargo area. And since most people who buy an actual pickup truck almost never "use it like a truck" in the first place, it surprises me that this vehicle is not as strong of a seller than it is. And now with Hyundai and Volkswagen preparing to build similar vehicles, that more than validates the need for this type of vehicle to exist.
But, if you're happy with your purchase, that's all that really matters. 'Nuff said. 🐰

Ford is also coming out with one based on the escape. I think manufacturers are predicting that they will become popular in the US soon. You cant buy a stick shift half ton from the last 13 years either. Most brands got rid of their stick by 2007, Ridgeline came out in 2006. Even the midsize trucks are losing their sticks. Most people who have similar needs but prefer a half ton, prefer it because they don't feel manly enough in a midsize or a Ridgeline, which unfortunately is a large chunk of people. Some people with similar needs do buy them with the intention of getting a camper trailer in the future, that's reasonable really.
