Thanks. I know what you mean. I used to use the twitcher way too often. Ends up just dragging all the plaster out the corner. So now I just try and use them 2-3 times in a set of at all possible.
@DANNY R ive done several today and have done as alex says and they come out mint... I was using the twitcher on every pass of the wall, only used it once late on in the gauge today and came out perfect.
@@AlexMorleyPlastering your work is spot on and it's nice that you don't get on your high horse about 2 coating, I've been plastering 16 years and have come to pretty much same views and techniques as you, 2 coat better but 1 coat and sponge can be just as good, especially for site work lol. Keep the vids coming 👍
This is a great video, I’m currently going to college completing a rendering / plastering course hoping to change careers! Thanks for taking the time out to do this video. Just one question, for what you did in this room, what did you charge?
It’s a great career to get into. Just don’t over do it on your body. Price wise this was on a m² rate of about £7.50 m². It worked out at just over £300 for the day I think.
I use to hate spounge cos it took the skill out 12 years later I like the easy of it not a full time spreed anymore as my company has grown was on the trowel today tho
I must admit I don’t sponge all that often. Mainly because I’m lazy, however the finish you get really is good. Lovely and smooth. Great technique to use if your not on the trowel all the time.
@@AlexMorleyPlastering also worked next to a guy that does and his looks so much better before painting no difference after but looks good if not painted straight away
Hi mate. Great work buddy, very impressed. Can I ask after spongeing and flattening in with speed skim when do you go over with the trowel ( how firm should the plaster be?) . Then the wet trowel to follow.... Be great if you could help as I've been getting waves in my walls. Also my trusted Marshalltown I've had for about 8 years is no good anymore. To out of shape 😫. Need a replacement. Hope to hear back from you Thanks Craig 👍
Hi.Can you please make a video how you break in a new standard or flexi trowel .What sandpaper will you for that tips and tricks that you use .Thanks very much .Apreciate your work
Get a sharpening stone and take the sharp edges off the corners at the front end of the trowel, not too much, just round them off ever so slightly. Then just use the trowel. That’s all there is to it really, there’s not really any way around it. It will be frustrating at first, as the trowel will not glide over your work, and if you pull too fast it will judder over the skim leaving marks, so you must slow down the motion of going over your work to avoid this, the more you use it this will pass, and it will become more comfortable and easier to use, giving you more speed and confidence
Been plastering 24 years & only staring to use the spat! Using the Ox blue blade speedskim, & the Nela spatula. But I'm afraid of waves in the skim when it's painted! Blades just seem too flexible. Am I right to be concerned?
Hi alex great video mate, ive got the plastic refina spat and I find everytime i flatten with it it just tears and sets the plaster really quick? like it wont take out lines like it does in your video were am I going wrong !
Hi pal I 1 coat a lot cus get grip problem at times so just cuts down on wear and tear and never used spat or sponge and don’t get a bad job to be honest but I’m gonna give spat and sponge a go cus there is room for improvement to another spreads eye anyway plus cut down even more on repetition, just couple questions, do you put full set on before speedskim or rule it as you go along and how many trowels exactly after sponge thx pal?
Thanks for the comment. Yes, i put on everything in the set I’m going to do then flatten when the spat. Unless the suction is abnormally high. Regards the process after the sponge. 1. Flatten with a Spat to remove sponge marks. 2. Leave 10 min another flatten off this time with a trowel. (No water, up and down) 3. 20-40 min when touch dry, 1 wet trowel (ideally cross trowel) 3. 20-30min dry pass with a plastic trowel, or a steel trowel which you keep clean. Hope this helps. Sponge makes a MASSIVE Difference of your one coating.
I get the same problem, my hands lock up on me after a while, happened to me when I was nearing my 50's. I have to shake them to get my circulation back, I also have on my trowel hand on the back of my wrist a swollen carpal capitate bone that sticks out which is painfull to touch when I make a fist and move my wrist up and down. Defo a young mans game. Shoulders, arms legs and back all shot. Every step is an ache to far once you rest up.
@@livesportsvideo03 lol I’m the same 50 now and all you said there I’ve got going on, must be worst job in world for wear and tear, just trying make the job bit easier on myself 👍
So it's still took you 2 and a half hours to one coat with half time .... Call me crazy but I'd rather 2 coat traditional for the sake of half an hour. Not knocking your finish but it's half an hour. I can make a 2 bag set flash in 1.5 hours without sponging or one coat. So what's the point? I just don't understand no matter how many spreads I speak to.
If you can complete a set in 1 1/2 hours start to finish your a far better plasterer than I am. Even on a roasting hot day I can’t get the plaster to set that fast. Standard for me is 1st set 8:30-1pm. 2nd set 1pm - 4pm ish. With no accelerator. If your new to plastering sponging is waaaaay easier to get a professional finish. Pretty much zero higher marks, and dries a solid colour.
@@AlexMorleyPlastering I'd say if you can one coat to a good finish then you're a better plasterer than me. It's not hard with accelerator and dirty water to flash a set. One coat, two coat method using same gear to lay straight in. Again, I wasn't knocking your work, I'm just intrigued with the different methods is all. I've been plastering 10 years, if there's a way to make it less straining I'm all ears.
I'm gonna share a dirty secret. First 2 years of my plastering journey , I only did one coat. No sponging. One can usually tell however it was never noticeable...... to the point where veteran plasterers couldn't even tell. I wouldn't dream of one coating now. Not sure how I got away with it really
Just keep using it. Carbon steel is the easier trowel to break in. Stainless takes a good time more. Just round off the front corners slightly with a sharpening stone
I been plastering 25 years. That sir, is an excellent finish. Glad to see there's more top spreads about.
Wicked work Alex 👌🏻
Some good advice
Some good advice there fella, ive never been a fan of wet corners and always avoid them where possible.... But think i use the twitcher 2 much...

This is my next trade to master and really appreciate the way u explain things only thing left to do buy one of those speed skims and go for it
Tough one to master. Great trade. The spats are great. If your just starting. Sponge float is the easiest way to get into it.
Brilliant 👏
Thanks for the feedback

Do you tape liners ?
This looks awesome. Do you have to use PVA or anything else before the first layer on a plasterboard?

Are you flattening straight away with the plastic? Sounds like the plaster is j being left too long.

For a complete beginner would you recommend 1 coat or 2 coat ?
Definitely 2 coats. It’s a lot easier to take out the discrepancies in the wall.

what do you think of speedskim
I love the sf not a fan for the st...
what the best way to brake in carbon steel trowel if you just do skimming ?
Just keep using it. Carbon steel is the easier trowel to break in. Stainless takes a good time more. Just round off the front corners slightly with a sharpening stone
Are you unbelievably tall or is that room for hobbits?
The latter one. 😂😂😂
Very clear guidance - I’m well impressed.
Are you really tall ? Or is a bit of Alicenwonderland going on?
Wait, what height are you that you didn't need tressles? 😂 Great job nevertheless.
Not as bad as you think. I’m 6”2 and the room is 2.2m high. Give away is above the doorway. 💪
