    My grandad raised me after my mum left when I was eight. We had his funeral at city of London. I had no hesitation in cremation for this man who I love so much, so much. Because he was mentioned in dispatches, and given oak leaves for bravery during WW11 in the Royal Navy.....they offered to commit his ashes to the sea. It was awesome....but, not a day goes by that I don’t think about my grandad, my wonderful, fabulous, funny, brave grandad! I will be cremated, and my husband will be too. I have no misgivings about it! Thank you for your video! 🌹

I don't know what made me click on this video but I sure am pleased I did! now I no what happens at the crem once the curtains close. not as scary as youd think is it! my dad and mum were buried because mum thought burning people was wrong..wonder if she would have changed her mind if she had seen this explanation of what happens. I've told my wife and daughters I have to be cremated when I go...no one should have the burden of a grave! good work

      @larryb8022 Před 5 lety +1

      I plan on being cremated as well, I to just can't think of being buried 6ft under and decomposing. Their are coffins that will help slow the process the tip on the end of the coffin come off sometime during the time the person is buried and any moister in the coffin comes out through that tip then the coffin seals up to help preserve the remains longer. This is what I've been told I use to work in a funeral home and I can say that the people who are brought to the place I work were treated with respect and dignity. I would always talk to them while they lay resting and prayed over them. Just my way of showing respect. It's a very hard job at least for me to do this type of work.

    This is a very comforting video, as we have just had our sister cremated and heard allsorts of stuff, like they just scrape any old ashes into the urn, they wait for a load and cremate them all together etc etc. It was comforting to know that they are shown respect and dignity til the end. I am horrified to read posts below of someone promoting the way HE believes it should be done, and arguing with people who disagree. How disrespectful can someone be?

    • @minxadinxaroo
      @minxadinxaroo Před 5 lety

      I was also told they put any old ashes into the urns. Having attended the funerals of too many loved ones over the last ten years these reassurances that the remains are indeed theirs, coupled with the respect given to said remains was a revelation to me. To the point where I couldn't see the point in scattering my Mum's ashes because I didn't think they were hers. Time for a rethink.

      Me to, and not the me to movement! It was beautiful respectful peaceful. Not like the horror story play out in the new. Their was just a story SC about a funeral home not following guidelines disposal of human remains. The funeral home had held this lady's body for three years. After having an ledge supposed to be funeral. The funeral home had the lady's body draped in a blanket with incense around it and air fresheners to mask the smell, and in this part of the funeral home it wasn't cool enough. One would have though that the funeral home director would have stored the body in a refrigerated room, but then there is always the matter of doing what's right the first time.
      Anyway the family was highly upset knowing that the funeral home had treated this wife and mother in this manner. America the beautiful.

    Sad to say, we here, across the pond are in 2018, what I call 'thano-phobic" - we fear death. So we make it a terrible bugaboo, some scary hobgoblin. Our passion for worshiping youth and all things disposable blinds us to the cyclical, re-purposing of all living things. Cremation speaks to this idea, and moreover, does it in a practical fashion. Native cultures are far ahead of us, on that one. Our mom died peacefully at home, of old age and senile dementia in her bed at 95. We looked after her lovingly and with great care. We gave her last rites, since she had been a lifelong Catholic. We even cleaned and prepared her body for the funeral directors to take away. (And yes, she expressed a wish to be cremated when the time came). Because we were refused Medicaid..we 'chose' to nurse mother at home. (American health care? Please, don't get me started..) Anyroad.... in the end that default decision transformed our lives for good and all, giving us a rich experience, and healing in our family that continues to this day - almost two years after mother's passing. I gently encourage others, and their families, here in the States and the UK - to become educated, and not to let a fear of death... or, mis-information govern their actions, and responses to what is, in fact, a very natural part of life...thank you..

    Both of my parents were cremated as I wish to have my body cremated. No matter how you look at it things are very grim at the end of the line. Buried your eaten by bugs, cremated you burn to ashes. I chose cremation for 2 reasons 1) Im not taking up any space on earth 2) I can be brought into my remaining family's homes and or thrown into the wind never to be seen again (in this case we did this with my uncles ashes at his golf course). my mom was cremated when she passed away from ALS in 2016, my question tho is after the ashes are taken out, do they CLEAN the inside of the burn chamber after EVERY body? I sure as hell hope so otherwise I not only have my mom's ashes in her beautiful purple urn (her fav color) but also the ashes of other people too which horrifies me, also the thought of my mom being put into a blender to get the parts down to "ashes" which also probably isn't washed out...I don't mean to sound rude BUT I do NOT want other peoples ashes in with my loved ones, that's just wrong... do they clean BOTH of them out after every person? if not when your loved one is cremated you are not only getting them but a bunch of other strangers as well... I am NOT ok with that at all, yeah call me petty but, I'm being honest so please don't be rude to me

      In England, it is law that only one coffin is ever placed into the cremation retort at any one time. Any particulate residue left behind after the cremator technician has 'raked down' is 'blown out' when the next coffin is placed into the cremator. The initial combustion of the coffin/casket causes a momentary increase in pressure that blows out any dusty ashes. This is when prior to crematoria having mercury abatement systems fitted requiring the exhaust gasses to be cooled, you would sometimes see a wisps of bluish smoke exiting the crematorium chimney. It is also worth bearing in mind that the remains of a human body after cremation is almost entirely consisted of calcined bone which remains a in relatively large easily removable mass. Any parts not raked down into the next chamber are merely carbonise wood particles from the coffin that are lying in the cooler parts of the cremator that quickly burn up and blow out upon charging of the next coffin. In the UK, crematoria pride themselves of carrying out cremations in the most dignified and respectful manner. Sadly because of the very nature of funerals old wives tales and salacious rumours are all to often heard. None of which I can assure you are true.

    • @cremationpete
      @cremationpete  Před 5 lety

      Ksloozy Doo there isn’t any 24 hour wait as such, this is just the time frame in which the coffin has to be placed into the cremator following the funeral. Usually the coffin is placed into the cremator within moments of the mourners vacating the ceremony area but in cases were its an early morning funeral the cremator(s) may not be up to temperature or there may be a backlog due to cremator breakdown, slow cremations etc. It is the law in the U.K. that the coffin is placed in the cremator exactly how it is received upon the catafalque. If a post mortem examination is required it is done before the deceased person is released into the care of the funeral director/family. Usually embalming and other presentation work is carried out upon the deceased before they are ready for viewing in the funeral home.

      Diane.....it's different where you live. Disregard anything you already know...... I live in the suburbs of a large city. There is one funeral home here that has three locations. It was a bit more expensive, but has the best reputation and is the most dignified. The funeral home is lovely inside and we spoke to the funeral director in his very uncluttered office. He could not have been more professional and respectful. After all the decisions were made, we were able to go see my mother in a special viewing room that is arranged like a bedroom. We were not going to have a visitation, so this was for family only. She looked very peaceful and just sleeping. While it's not necessary for cremation, unless there is a viewing, we also picked her favorite outfit for her to be cremated. She was a very proper, proud woman and sending her off in a hospital gown was not going to work in my mind. After all this, there is a facility that the funeral homes use......either privately owned by one funeral home, or a central crematorium. The deceased is taken there by the funeral home. In the case of a cremation, each state has a separate law. There has to be a 72 hour waiting period before cremation in case there is an inquest into the death. They go through a similar process, but because the U,S. is so huge, crematoriums have developed to process the growing population. It's not so cozy and quaint as in the UK, unfortunately for the loved ones. I have no idea how they are handled at the crematorium...but the remains are returned to the funeral home and brought to the service or given to the family or loved ones, depending on their preference. Death is such a hard subject....and for an ill patient, it's hard on them and the loved ones. Once they pass, it's much harder on those left behind. The only thing I can say is if you have a co-worker, or friend or church member who has lost a loved one, go be there with them as they say goodbye. Funerals are for them....and emotional support from those around them is much better than a card or flowers. It has been in my experience.

Would I be correct in saying it doesn't happen straight away? My brother said he wasn't interested in seeing the ashes spread in the garden of remembrance, although I might do. I just wonder if the guests at the funeral normally witness it too, or whether it happens much later. Thanks.

      Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England all have the same styles of coffin (anthropoidal shape, though ‘caskets’, straight sided and ‘st Albans’ shaped coffins are also broadly available). Traditionally Scottish coffins were adorned with silk lowering cords and tassels. This is adornment usually omitted when the committal is cremation.

    I have left detailed instructions in my will where I am to be buried. Going to spend eternity in a beautiful English country churchyard in the Lincolnshire wolds. The thought of being incinerated at some grim municipal crematorium where they roll the dearly departed off an assembly line is horrific. I remember my fathers committal service. We had to wait for the preceding one to finish. Horrible. No dignity. That is why I'm totally opposed to cremation. Also I'm a trained gardener the thought of decomposing into the earth of the wolds to give life to nature is much better than polluting the atmosphere going up in smoke.

    A complete waste of wood, but one myth which isnt is that some remove the coffin first for resale, which to me makes more sense, however, no one will admit this.

    • @cremationpete
      @cremationpete  Před 5 lety +1

      Most coffins destined for cremation are not solid wood. They are largely mdf or particle board with a paper foil or veneer. Coffins have to be approved for cremation and most wood or wood product coffins are FSC approved ensuring they are environmentally viable. Regardless of wood being used, the remains have to, for reasons of hygiene and physical ability of being placed in the cremator with dignity and safety of the crematorium technician, be contained in a suitable combustible vessel. Wood or wood byproducts fit this application nicely being rigid and combustible. There is the option of the remains being placed in a bag affixed to a suitable rigid board for ease of charging into the cremator, it's up to bereaved clients to decide if that's what they want for their loved one.

      They check the name plate on the lid of the coffin, and cross reference it with the paper work (which includes, the "green slip" that the doctor (be that at a hospital, or the family/care facility's GP) makes out upon pronouncing a person dead, the official death certificate that the next of kin receives upon registering the death with the relevant authorities) that the funeral director (undertaker) gives the cremation staff.
      They check the name plate on the lid of the coffin against the paper work provided to the crematorium by the funeral director (or, to use the older term, "undertaker). The paperwork includes (but is not always limited to) the "green slip" that the pronouncing doctor issues upon declaring death, medical certificates (unless the death has been referred to and investigated by a coroner (known as "Procurator Fiscal" in Scotland), and the official death certificate that is issued by the local authorities upon a next of kin going to officially register the death.
      In the UK, the law states that once the coffin is sealed it is against the law to re-open it. It has been known in the past for families to leave, for instance, the family Bible, or some other "family heirloom" in the coffin, not realise until the last moment, and have to resign themselves to the fact that it is gone forever. The coffin is ALWAYS cremated with the corpse.
      (As an aside, this video stated that cremation must take place within twenty-four hours of the committal. The law is that cremation MUST TAKE PLACE ON THE SAME DAY as the committal service is held.)
