Don’t confuse the CX-50 with the Mazda CX-5, the company's bestselling model. Although the two are about the same size and have similar names, the more ruggedly focused CX-50 has standard all-wheel drive, mild off-road capability, and a higher price.

Inside, the CX-50 brings a sense of luxury with sleek design and premium materials. Its infotainment system features a large touchscreen and all the right features, but it isn’t as easy to use as some others in the segment. Mazda offers the CX-50 in eight trim levels, with two available engine choices. The standard engine is refined and powerful enough for most buyers, but we prefer the turbocharged engine that’s standard in the higher trims. Its 256 horsepower makes the Mazda one of the best performers in the class, reaching 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds. Fuel economy is respectable, but lags behind some key rivals such as the Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, and Toyota RAV4. The CX-50 handles well and delivers a higher level of driver engagement than most others in this segment. This is one small crossover that doesn’t drive like a shrunken minivan.
What's New for 2024: The Mazda CX-50 was all-new just last year, so its list of updates for 2024 is short. Mazda has made small tuning changes to the CX-50’s suspension and steering to improve handling. The midlevel Premium trims now include a 12-speaker Bose stereo system and wireless phone charger.

I had a cx50 as a loaner car, and I really liked how it drove. I think it’s a good crossover for people who want something that drives well on the road, but is capable of softroading and ski trips. It also looks really sharp.
