2023: Florida Gators vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Credit to Planet Gator for the upload- I'm having a harder and harder time getting these game files these days. Anyway, Florida makes a chicken dinner out of Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks. I own none of the footage in this video and claim fair use; credit to SEC Network.

The plays in the fourth quarter helped Florida steal (and I say that proudly) Saturday’s game at South Carolina:
- The 4th & 11. Mertz scrambles to avoid pressure and desperately checks down to Arlis Boardingham. I instantly thought the play was over. Then Boardingham, fortunately, makes one defender miss his tackle and Trevor Etienne gives a great block to give his teammate enough room to scurry past the first down spot.
- The 4th & 1 (same drive). I was upset that they were going for it because I figured since they were close to the end zone, it’d best to kick the FG to make it a one-possession game. Mertz did an excellent job of milking the play clock down to one second before snapping the ball, which I think caught South Carolina by surprise. Waiting that long may have made S CAR assume Florida was getting them to jump offside instead of actually attempting. Then Arlis caught the touchdown at the end.
- The defense’s rebound from the RTP penalty. I thought the penalty might have been the last nail in the coffin. Luckily the defense bounced back and got the final stop when needed.
- 4th & 10 (GW Drive) - Mertz magically avoids the pass rush and throws it down the field to Ricky Pearsall. Pearsall quickly recognizes his QB his scrambling, adlibs his route to stay open, and high points the ball in a spot where Mertz threw to so only his guy can get it.
- Tip drill (Same drive) - Pass bounces off Pearsall’s hands into the hands of Tre Wilson, who gets the first down into the S CAR red zone.
- 2nd & 15 - Mertz perfectly anticipates Pearsall’s route opening on a beautiful TD throw to take the lead
