  • Some tourists in Vancouver's Stanley Park went for an unexpected ride after a pair of horses pulling a carriage were spooked during an anti-pipeline protest. The carriage was stopped for protesters when a car sounded a horn and scared the horses. The animals jumped the curb, pulling the carriage into a bench and throwing one woman off. Several passengers proceeded to jump off the carriage. Luckily, no one was hurt.

I suspect the driver dismounted and went to the horses' heads (which is not incorrect) when they stopped, and lost his grip on the bridle when they spooked. The mistake is that on a vehicle like this you should always have TWO people. The driver stays on board and a groom or whip dismounts to "head" the horses.

Some love pulling. Some love teaching kiddos. They do need downtime and TLC though, much like people do. Belgian horses tend to like pulling; that's what they were bred for and are very good at. cakeman58 Sack out just means you carefully get the horse used to anything that scares it. The horses get calmer and more confident with this training. Horses are curious animals and when they gain confidence with something that scares them, they will cautiously approach and smell it. With sounds they are first trained from a distance and when relaxed that distance is reduced until they no longer fear that sound. Of course you can never bomb proof your horse against everything, but the time taken in desensitizing a horse against anything that it may encounter makes for a confident and relaxed horse.
I have no idea what training these horses received or if they are well treated, but most horses enjoy their jobs as few people want to risk their lives with an animal that weighs over a thousand pounds.

Why did those people jump out?? The safest bet would’ve been to stay in the carriage

Not if it went into the water, with the heavy carriage and if it tipped over on them the people could drown thank God they were all safe 💙🙏💙

Passengers experienced all the horsepower of that vehicle.

I haven't seen so many clumsy uncoordinated people in my life. Okay, jokes aside...horse drawn carriages don't work in this day and age. Especially in the city near traffic!!!

I drove one for 13 yrs, traffic is not the problem. The horses are used to that, but you never know what can spooky them. My question is where was the driver.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY HORSES HAVE NO PLACE IN CITIES.

The best thing to do in a situation like this is stay quiet the screams will panic the horses even more.
