- Cabell Calloway III (December 25, 1907 - November 18, 1994) was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, conductor and dancer. He was associated with the Cotton Club in Harlem, where he was a regular performer and became a popular vocalist of the swing era. His niche of mixing jazz and vaudeville won him acclaim during a career that spanned over 65 years.
Calloway was a master of energetic scat singing and led one of the most popular dance bands in the United States from the early 1930s to the late 1940s. His band included trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Jonah Jones, and Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon "Chu" Berry, guitarist Danny Barker, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Cozy Cole.
Calloway had several hit records in the 1930s and 1940s, becoming known as the "Hi-de-ho" man of jazz for his most famous song, "Minnie the Moocher", originally recorded in 1931. He reached the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades (1930s-1970s). Calloway also made several stage, film, and television appearances until his death in 1994 at the age of 86. He had roles in Stormy Weather (1943), Porgy and Bess (1953), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), and Hello Dolly! (1967). His career saw renewed interest when he appeared in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers.
Calloway was the first African-American musician to sell a million records from a single and to have a nationally syndicated radio show. In 1993, Calloway received the National Medal of Arts from the United States Congress. He posthumously received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His song "Minnie the Moocher" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2019. He is also inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame and the International Jazz Hall of Fame.
Expecting the band to be ready 15 min before showtime is far from "demanding", just professional.
It's an interesting comment, I wonder if back in the 30s that was seen as demanding because I dont understand it otherwise. I'd want performer's around 30 minutes before show start minimum haha
Right i thought the same. And no in the 30s that was also normal. Lady just likes to talk i guess 😅
considering it was so long ago they probably didn’t have nearly as many resources they have now to get ready. they had suits & shits 😂😂 who knows what else and then the setting up etc. and theyre black too
we need to be on the same page when we go on stage. That means don't be fucked up.
Punctuality, they call it.
Cab looked good even months before the end. RIP Cab Calloway
(1907 - 1994)
i can remember watching the blues bros for many years before he died and i for years thought to myself it's amazing he's still around until he wasn't. i've since heard his 30's music and it is incredible there are like some songs i don't care but others i love much like any artist. and he did look good in feb. of 93 it's hard to believe that was 30 years ago!
🌑⚫🖤🤎💛👑🎶🌹🌹🌹🥀📿🙏
He certainly did! He was sharp as a tack! I loved his music. He was amazing!
He actually aged pretty well, seeing him here vs 50 years ago, he doesn't look like an unrecognizable, dried up prune yet. His face still looks the same 😅 He was so cool and handsome too!
Agree
100 per cent!
He was a very talented man and he deserved more recognition and respect and credit for his work. His work was very inspiring and always amazing. He was a very talented person who is missed still today
They should make movie of this great musician life already.it’s long overdue he been gone for 30 years now. Rest in peace Cab Calloway 😊
And mike epps doing thé rôle
Agreed 100%.....
That what I been thinking
I thought Prince would have been great as a young Cab Callaway. May they both RIP!!!
@@jadehathaway4336 even bigger question which actor can play him? And who should write and direct that movie?
My mom was born in 1923. She ADORED Mr. Calloway!!
she’s just like me fr
I love finding these gems on CZcams. What an absolutely incredible man and performer he was. He had enough charisma for 10 people. It's so amazing that he was able to perform for so long, that even the younger people wanted to see and hear what he could do.
Cab Calloway was even elegant at age 85 recuperating at home after a fall on the ice. He exudes style, class, and charisma.
When Cab went to work at the Cotton Club they had their famous 'Tall, Tan and Terrific' light skinned black girls who had to be lighter skinned than a paper bag. He said he would quit unless he could bring his own 'Brown Bunnies' chorus girls and he won the fight. They were the only dark chorus girls earning big money in NY at that time.
I could actually see Cab conducting his own band in heaven. Dressed to the 9's in his zoot suit tuxedo with his conductor's staff in his hand really swingin! He would have so many of his friends performing with him: Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Lena Horne, The Nicholas Brothers, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington... You can best believe they're all up there singing, dancing, playing, and swingin' right now!!
My Lord I've never thought about that..
I'd hope he's willing to talk to us as we go up
was thinking the same 💗
love that
It simply won't be heaven without these personalities. But don't forget Hazel Scott, Billie Holliday, Memphis Minnie, Josephine Baker, Ruth Brown, and others too numerous to list.
Who's at the gate it's Minnie the Moocher
Time to call Lucifer up here to sh**t ya
😂😂
You can still see the youthful spirit in his eyes, even tho he was 85 here. (1907-1994)
Cab was class. Whenever I would see him at the Aqueduct Racetrack clubhouse he had a smile for everyone and most of the time he was the best dressed man there RIP brother.
You went ot watch the racetracks too??
I lived in Yonkers , but worked in White Plains. I had the giddy pleasure of meeting this gem in route to work. Such a joy he was! ❤️
How was yonkers
@@roselynholloway7863
At that time, it was great. Lived right on the Hudson. Now I hear it’s rough.
@@Watersart___ ok
Yes he was a trooper allright. He continued to work for well over another year until he had his stroke in the summer of 1994. One of the last surviving bandleaders of the '30s at the time to still be working.
I especially like his earliest recordings (1931 to 1935) and continue to find more 78s of those every year.
As far as I have read in a book, his last preformances were in september and october of 1993. After that his health was declining too fast for it to be safe for him to be on stage.
He broke his hip in june of 93 and theres only one video of that from what i can tell.
Saw him in 1987 in Hamburg. Was still amazing.
@@agamemnonpadar5706 There's footage of that place if it's in Germany. I think it's on my channel but it's probably online in other places.
@@agamemnonpadar5706 Yea the preference youre talking about is online! You're probably In thar crowd!

Sorry if om telling you info you already know. I'm only trying to help
Rest In Heaven Legend Cab Calloway 🙏🏿❤️🌹
This dude was a giant in the music world and still relevant today. RIP
My family and I did get to see him together once. It was a great show. An old man with a whole lot of energy! I miss him and others from his era.
"I have a whole band in heaven" 🤧😭
I was working a delivery job in '94. The day after Cab died I delivered a package to a woman named Heidi Hough. When I was a kid the only Cab Calloway I knew about was the cartoons of him from the '30s. I LOVE to watch that man dance! I saw one of his last performances at the Hollywood Bowl. I believe he was about 84 at the time.
Seems like Mr. Calloway had such a zest for life !!! RIP Mr. Calloway
Cab Calloway is utterly brilliant!
RIP
Cab Calloway
(1907-1994)
Ahh! What a man! What showmanship! Cab Calloway an American Treasure! Must be leading a 12 piece orchestra at the Pearly Gates!🤗
ONLY IF MINNIE IS THERE..OTHERWISE....IT'S BETTER NOT TO MENTION HER...BUT A LOWDOWN HOOCHIE COOCHIE "GIRL COULD EASILY BE THERE..WONDER WHAT KINDA BRASS THEY PLAY THRE? I'LL BET THEIR SOUND CARRIES FOREVER.
Un Gawa Black Power!
James Brown said that he got his moves from Cab Calloway. Michael Jackson got his moves from James Brown. Cab was so influential in the generations that followed him.
The greatest showman that ever lived.
I was doing some reseach into Cab, the "original works" from the '30's. Then I found this. WHAT A MAN! I think the Blues Brother's was the CROWN of a great career!
YES REALLY COOL HANDSOME NICE MAN
As a cuphead player living in China, I grew up watching rubber hose cartoons and fell in love instantly with cuphead featuring the same 1930s cartoon style, that's where I came upon Cab Calloway by confronting with King Dice, a character whose prototype is Calloway, which a fact that I learnt afterwards. I love these inspiring performance and the 1930s image really match my perception of the classic United States.
You should look at cab in the 80s. He was better than he was even in the 30s then!
@@WeegeeFan1Studios Thank you man, I never knew much about Cab, I'll definitely check it out!
@@corpulentamujer6671 Yes sure! He even still sang in the 90s! A few months after this interview was recorded he broke his hip as well. Look up "Cab Calloway 1993" and youll find his last recording I know of. He's sitting in a chair and his voice is just a gruff monster. But you can go back to 1990, where I think he had his voice still left. There's two recordings from 1992 as well.
Many from 1987 and 1988 though.
What a beautiful man! I pray that I can look that sharp in my 80's.
As a white man, growing up in the eighties, I never knew some of this history. It's good to learn about the black roots of some of these classics. I'm learning and it started for me from learning that koko the clown signing Saint James infirmary blues was this guy Cab Callaway. Led me to other amazing performances and influences he made on music.
Funk will always be my favorite genre, but the blues are a close second.
Dive into religion and you will find things that will amaze you. I’d also look up king James and King Charles black and yes he helped write the King James Bible there are many things we should sit down at large gathering about

September 21, 1991: I was 27 years old, going to the Hollywood Bowl for the first time. It was "Movie Night at the Bowl" and they were showing "The King and I". The opening act, however...Cab Calloway. My only time ever seeing him live, and even at 83 years old, he did not disappont. A showman extraordinaire...
one of the greatest American showman of all time. Saw him in 1984
@@timburr4453 Do the recordings give any dustice to what it was like to see him live?
Fortunate 🎉
I grew up listening to him . These guys created class and style.
CAB CALLAWAY was an inspiration to thousands! His goofy lyrics and unique sound effects will live on till music no longer plays! Thank you for this video!
CAB WAS AHEAD OF HIS TIME AND PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST MODERN BANDLEADER TO PLAY THE MOST MODERN AND BEST SWING ARRANGEMENTS OF THAT ERA OF WHITE AND BLACK BANDLEADERS AND CABS BAND NOT ONLY DID A GREAT CONCERT THEY GAVE A GREAT AND ENTERTAINING EVENING BASED ON INFORMATION FROM " THE MARIO FOUNDATION A PRIVATELY FUNDED NOT FOR PROFIT THINK TANK
I'm still rocking a tee-shirt of Cab with his signature smile! He is truly an American treasure. No doubt about it. A gift from God. He was blessed and we were blessed to witness his greatness. RIP... CAB CALLOWAY III ps I hope somebody would do a movie on his life. The younger generation need to know more about our hero's. JAZZ GIANTS... Knowledge is Everything!! History 101...

In a word...LEGENDARY.
Ngl that man was very handsome when he was young geez. Haha
So you'd date him?
he was gah dahm
@@thediaz07what that got to do with calling a man handsome?
I discovered him on the blues Brothers as a young kid growing up in the 80s. And, I didn’t know that he was also on Sesame Street on one particular episode. rest in peace Cab Calloway. You’re the greatest.
What episode?
@@Sirena_belle i'm not sure which episode because there's so many of Sesame Street episodes.
Who else remembers that Cab Calloway had a small role as a player in the climactic poker game in “The Cincinatti Kid”?
One of my favorite's of all time performers. Unmatched! Yeah there's an awesome band of singers and musicians that are jamming in the after-zone. Thank God for everything they left us. If I was raised on the music of today I dont think I would have made it.
What an absolute joy to view this interview with a true American legend.
His influence can be seen in some of today's artists, such as Janelle Monae.
What a great entertainer he was. He had it all!
Legendary, iconic, and an all around professional at his best. This man was pure gold ✨️ 👍💪✊️
Great Interview,,Such a Talentive Handsome fine Man,,,Omg The Moves He made with That Band Great Talent,,Rip C Callollway😌😎🤔🌍💯
Cab is definitely my favorite bandleader of the thirties, man the stories he could tell…
What a life. That was the classiest era in American history.,He still had great hair even at his age. 🙏🏽
He certainly was something else. Undeniable talent and magnificent style. The heppest of the hep cats.
Calloway was a music innovator with lots of energy and spark ⚡️He was a unique performer creator - in a nutshell, he was terrific.
They need a movie made about him have Morris Day to play him!!
His blues brothers performance gets better every time I watch it
He had the endorsement of Jake and Elwood Blues! Legend. 😎👍
his whole band being heaven was such a beautiful thing to envision 💗 now he’s there too. it’s nice to believe they’re all playing again.
Thank you so much for uploading. True gem of human. What a man.
I used to think Cab was my grandfather when I was a kid. They look so much alike.
I'll bet he's playing with his "band in heaven" right now.
A brilliant man and a fabulous performer.
Fantastic, musician, gentleman! Love his music, joy and talented orchestra and share it every chance I get!
This marvelous GENIUS will live in each of us FOREVER
Legends Live forever 🙏🙏🙏🥰
Huge fan of cab calloway. I have a ton of his stuff in my CD collection. And I always know if one of his songs come on because it has a certain bounce to it. I got goosebumps when he came out on the stage in the white suit in The Blues Brothers.
Cab's the man! Thanks for this.😊
Let’s all kick the gong around in honor of Cab!
R. I. P. Mr. Calloway, his legacy lingers 😊
Thank you

I can see in his eyes ..full of audience experience..a lovely great world entertainer person from 1930-1960
He is right..they definitely have a band in heaven.😊🙏
There isn’t a cooler man that ever lived in the history of the United States.
Still very handsome, still with all of his wits. Look at that beautiful head of hair. Thank you Cab for all that you gifted the world with.
What a wonderful treat! He was pure Genius.
This was amusing, insightful, & touching. I love & adore my ancestors so much. Rest well, baba.
One of my late fathers favourite artists
I have a whole band waiting for me in heaven.
Two men get in a KNIFE fight, cut each other and become LIFE long friends…we just ain’t built like that anymore
*BRAVO!!!!!!!*
He was also on a Betty Boop cartoon!!!! What a legend ❤❤
I liked what he was talking about playing in the south and driving around in a Pierce Arrow. Like Monica said he was "rubbing it in." As an older southerner, I know what she meant and he knew how to live. What a life.
Kids these days don’t know what a spitball is, my generation grew up doing this in class.
Both my uncle and grandfather were professional, feather weight boxers. My uncle was very good. They were friends with the heavyweight champ, Jack Dempsey and Cab Calloway. I remember watching the Blues Brothers with my uncle and he told me of all the stories. Thank god he was captured and appreciated in that movie because I don't know if generations would know him today.
Very recently I found out Cab was a family friend to a cousin I have in New Orleans. I found pictures of him and my cousin together. The cousin was a bartender in the 30s and they met most likely at the cotton club then years later were still friends in the 1950s. My cousin passed around 56 so we sadly lost contact with calloway after that
This was excellent I wanted more. He is missed.
A LEGEND!
Such a great interview. Cab the Legend!

Cab Calloway continues to inspire young musicians to this day. I invite you to look up the band Brothers Moving and enjoy the many videos of these young men performing Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher. Their interpretation pays great homage to Mr. Calloway.
Thank-you for posting this video, he was soooo cool
Great interview and memories. That was 30 years ago. RIParadise Cab
LEGEND
Cab was right in the middle of the Harlem Renaissance. What an era!
''demanding''? ''show up 15 minutes before showtime..''
That's not demanding. That's the minimum a professional musician mus do.
my thoughts exactly
Mine too.
But he let slide Jake and Elwood's tardiness, so he must've grown soft. 😎
I never cared for Monica much through the years because she always was over the top and often made the story about herself but her face lights up here talking with the Greatest Bandmaster Cab Calloway. She could never get over the top with him!
Mr. Cab Calloway & Ms. Cyd Charisse in Ms. Janet Jackson's video Alright is AMAZING!!!
