As another poster pointed out, it likely wasn't your heatpipes drying out (in your older Noctua cooler) - It was more likely your thermal paste drying out - in a hot cpu 2-3 years it can start drying out or pumping out (depending on the paste and application).. For this reason I recently purchased a Thermalgrizzly Cryosheet for my next build - which according to some reviews offer similar performance to paste but should last many more years than a paste (thermal pads do not dry out).... Thanks for the quick review - I got this cpu cooler and wanted an independent review to confirm what temps you are getting and this vid is great :)

It wasn't a paste issue, I very recently upgraded the case before this, and redid the paste.

I did some more research to see if heatpipes could dry-out.
I found this post from Noctua in a threat - Maybe its informative:
      Greetings from Noctua!
Thank you very much for contacting us.

In theory it could happen that a heatpipe becomes leaky, thus losing the vacuum inside and its function gone. However, either this happens very early in the beginning already, in case of a production error, or after mechanical damage to the heatpipe, but not suddenly by itself.
As far as I can tell you have recently switched to a newer platform (AM4).
From tests with AM4 CPUs in our lab we know that the heatspreader of the CPU has an elevated outer edge, similar to a ring. A cooler with a flat base, like the NH-U12, will thus sit on this outer "ring" but won't have good mounting pressure in the middle, resulting in worse temperatures. This is one of the reasons why all current models from us, and most current heatsinks from other brands as well, come with a slightly convex base to make sure the mounting pressure is best where the chip underneath the heatspeader sits.
We can't guarantee that this is the reason for the temperature difference but it seems very likely, based on our internal tests and information we have about this matter.

@@wezleyjackson9918 That is interesting, thanks. Maybe that's the problem, my Noctua being an older version of the design with a flat and not convex base.

@@SimRacingCorner did you use the same paste with both coolers or did you use the different pastes provided with each cooler?

@@DrR1pper It wasn't the same thermal paste. The 120 EVO came with a tube of its own stuff, so I'm using that. On the Noctua, it was Arctic MX-6.

Remember to reapply your thermal paste every now and then once it dries out. Big difference too. Check old fans as well. Depends on wear and tear.

@@SimRacingCorner That's unfortunate your issue was different than normal. Would take it back to manufacturer for testing and refund, hope they have good support and will help you out or issue refund. Glad the Phantom spirit is kicking heat's ass. Good cpu cooler. Looks very pleasing too.
