I was raised up in Kermit, Texas which is about 60 miles or so away from Pecos, Texas! Brings back memories since I was born in 1952 and remember these, when our T.V. was working!

Oddly I never really like Edgar Buchanan as an actor when I was a kid.
When I got older I was a fan of Judge Roy Bean. Everything I read about him, implied he was the exactly the man they needed at the time. He apparently wasn’t the most straight laced character who ever lived but he didn’t like thugs, thieves or murderers. He appointed himself a Judge / Justice of the Peace because the bar he operated in the middle of no where needed one to control the drunks who were making the bar and the area unlivable.
He frequently threatened to hang every one but there’s no recorded instance of him hanging anyone at all. When Defendants came into the Court Room / Bar who couldn’t pay a tax or a fine - who had no food, no medicine because they were barely making a living on scrub land,, they were as likely to go home with the food or medicine they needed based on a a ruling of his court based on some statute that no one could find but him.
He held court using the butt of his gun as a gavel and into his sixties he was as willing to enforce his rulings with force as with the “law” and when he couldn’t do it, he had deputies who did it for him. Most of them, were what most people of the day called bar flies who hung around Bean’s bar, but they had a deep affection for Bean. In retrospect, I imagine his actual character and personality were a lot like Buchanan. He certainly bore a physical resemblance to him based upon pictures of the time.
