The lyric writing process;
Through writing the lyrics, we wanted to portray the relationship that is told by history but also the emotions we thought Dora would have experienced.
We first started writing on the basis of OnlyOneOf’s lyrics and we tried to stay with the themes and contents that is shown in their song. However, we also wanted to add a women’s perspective as femininity is an integral part of the song and we wanted to stay to true to Dora.
Throughout the song, we reference both Picasso and Dora’s profession/their artistry. We did this in order to display their dark emotions and the relationship they had. We implemented this through similes and metaphors that are seen in the song. For example, “Your dark/red room eclipsing darling” demonstrates Dora’s profession while working in a photography dark room and the imagery and colours connotes with an eclipse. Furthermore, lyrics like “forget your monotone” also display her monochromatic style which is seen throughout her photography and the pessimistic ‘monotone’ emotions.
Majorly, we wanted to depict an unstable relationship with the passion of their art, while focusing majorly on Dora Maar.
