  • Kaliningrad (Russian: Калинингра́д, German: Königsberg), is a the capital city of a Russian exclave at the Baltic sea between Poland and Lithuania.
    The history of Kaliningrad dates back centuries where it was the capital of Prussia with the name Königsberg. It was a an important cultural hub in the 18th and 19th century, also the home town of philosopher Immanuel Kant.
    Little is left of these times after the destructions that WWII brought. Now thanks to a new eVisa program, tourists from 50+ countries can easily visit Kaliningrad without a normal russian visa. There are direct bus connections from Gdansk, Elblag and even Warsaw.
    We start our walk at the Ploshchad' Pobedy (Площадь Победы) at the Victory column. We see the a russian-orthodox cathedral (Кафедральный собор Христа Спасителя) and church there.
    We walk down the Prospekt Leninskiy, a major street heading South to the old centre of the city. We pass the old castle ruins and finally see the old Kaliningrad Cathedral. I had to return to a ticket office to get into the cathedral where the Prussian history is seen. I somehow missed the Emanuel Kant tomb which is right behind the cathedral.
    At last we walk along the Pregolya river where we end this evening tour on the Jubilee bridge.

    • @poptravelorg
      @poptravelorg  Před rokem +3

      I'm not in the position here to give Russian visa advise. Just for your understanding: Kaliningrad is Russia so when you take a flight from another Russian city to Kaliningrad you don't leave the country therefore exit and enter the same country Russia. However, you leave Russia when going via land which marks an exit. Depending on whether your visa is multi-entry or not, this can be a problem when you'd want to reenter Russia and even Kaliningrad. Several e-visa options are paused currently so the situation is different for a lot of countries. Check with official government offices on what's really allowed

With the current situation you can also answer your question yourself. At the moment not even flights will go and it may take a while until tourism is possible again.

    • @Dovndyr13
      @Dovndyr13 Před 4 lety

      A European city is a western european city with city houses, market square etc. If I would put Kaliningrad in to present germany according to this video it would look as if its always been there never inside soviet union. A city which architectural city planning can be traced back to the one of paris and ancient Rome. Many eastern european cities like cherkassy , mykolaiv are verry different . I know they still are in Europe, still in style they wouldnt be seen as classical european.

    • @vmysql
      @vmysql Před 4 lety +3

      @@Dovndyr13 I'm not sure to understand you. For you where are the boundaries between Western and Eastern European cities? You said architectural city planning "can be traced back to the one of Paris and Ancient Rome". If you're talking about architectural influences you may find them in all Europe and in Russia too. You can find them in Ukrainian cities you talked about and more clearly in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivk or in Odesa.
      If you're talking about town houses, market places etc you have them in Warsaw, Riga, Vilnius but also in St Petersburg and in old Moscow,... The Soviet Union tried to erase the past but they did not succeed and that by the way that totalitarian architecture had their inspiration from Ancient Greece and Rome like Stalin's Empire style.

    • @Dovndyr13
      @Dovndyr13 Před 4 lety

      Well warsaw, lviv are not eastern europe, they are central European
      Downtown St Petersburg is build by mainly italian architects. Peter the Great wanted an European city in his realm
      I do not know any western european city who was inspired by Russia. Which are those
      In mykolaiv and cherkassy you dont find that parisian/ancient roman inspiration. They are interesting because they dont have it
      What would you call the main square in Odessa? Again a super beautifull city especially because of the trees. Yes it has southern european flair, but it stands in many ways on its own.
      I know stalin (like hitler and musolini) had a love for roman & greek architecture. But it more seems like single buildings remain and not entire cities in theire style
      Not sure if Soviet tried to erase its past, why you think so? Do you think also germany and the netherlands then tried to erase its past? Westberliners were asked if they wanted to rebuild the old Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. People said yes, city build a modern church instead.

    • @vmysql
      @vmysql Před 4 lety +1

      @@Dovndyr13 All cities in Europe have their own identity. In a country like France for example you can find different types of architecture. If you go in the south you will find places like Italy. If you go to north you have houses like Belgium and the Netherlands. And if you go on the East side you will find buildings like in West Germany.
      In most medieval cities in Germany or in Amsterdam you can hardly find a Parisian or an Ancient roman inspiration but they are part of European cities. In Russian cities too. For me, I think that there is like an "architectural continuum" between West and East Europe. Peter the Great and his heirs wanted to westernize Russia in architecture and Petersburg a "Window on Europe". So did the emperors of Prussia and Austria for their capital cities.
      And Soviet Union tried to erase its past because they made a propaganda on a "New Soviet Man" or Homo Sovieticus. They destroyed a lot of old churches and town houses to build places to "Glory for workers".
