  • Join Theme Park Engineering and Design at Purdue on a Tour of Old Ben No. 17, a mine relocated from southern Illinois. The coal mine tour is an extra fee exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago that explores the techniques and technology of deep coal mining in Illinois.
“Touring Old Ben No. 17-a mine relocated from southern Illinois-immerses you in the vast and sometimes perilous work of mining for coal. The scene is set as the facilitator narrates your cage elevator ride into the mine. See in a flash how Davy lamps reveal unseen methane dangers. Board the work train to experience a coal miner's "daily commute." See working examples of how extraction machinery has evolved from the pickaxe to longwall machines that can carve out football field-sized sections of shale.” - msichicago.org
disclaimer filmed in very low light. Video may be too dark to see at some points.

I did this back in the 1980's as a kid many times.
Still remember everything, it is crazy. They didn't have those computer screens at the end though from what I remember, or if they did it was old CRT monitors.

I remember doing this back in the 70s when I was a little kid. The way I remember it, the demonstration with the gas detector was last. I don't remember seeing the last room the way it is here with the computers showing the images. They may have revamped some of the rooms.

@@benhaushalter5067 It was built using real mine bits but it is fake. The stairs at the start take you up to the top and the elevator takes you down to ground level and inside.

A real mine doesn't have any lights at all. This mine is adapted to be safer than the real mine that it replicates, so they don't injure or kill anyone going through it. They even tell you that an elevator in a real mine shaft doesn't have walls and a ceiling.
