“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

I got sooo lucky, it’s literally unbelievable. I was open for business within 3 weeks of signing the lease. I saw a salon in my city’s mall that shut down, I called the mall to see how much it cost. I got the funds, the equipment, redesigned, updated plumbing and permits and I was open in 3 weeks. I’ve been open for 3 weeks now and I’m somehow turning a profit 🤞🏽

Started my own little studio with about $1500. Got second hand nail table, in excellent condition. A good light, a chair for my clients and was smart when buying products (Thank you for the sales, BTW). Little by little got the rest of my equipment. Still a work in progress, but I’m happy with what I have achieved so far. Did i mention i don’t owe a dime? Just spend from my profits and now i’m building a safety net of 6 months (between rent, material and “salary”).

Don’t forget your business insurance! Even before I started school, I started stockpiling supplies that I knew I would need. Art stuff, glitters, brushes, efile bits, stuff that didn’t have an expiration date or that had a very long shelf life. I also began acquiring my furniture a bit at a time. It made it easier on my pocketbook. While I was in school, I drew up my business plan and started working on the details and finding out exactly what I needed in order to keep it legal. It’s still a work in progress. I am a mobile tech. Discovering new and safe/sanitary ways to transport my supplies can be challenging on busier days and at times, my car looks like I sell foot baths 😂 Other days, it looks like I have the biggest display of nail polishes anyone could ever stack in an SUV. It all depends. But that first thing I did before doing a service on any client after getting my license was to make sure I had insurance to cover my business, my products and most importantly, my services!

I live in northern BC Canada. I reopened my business in 2018 and it cost me around $12,000. I already had some supplies, furniture and tools. The services I did were in my home and incl gels, mani, pedi and sugaring. I was expanding my business to go mobile and specialize in diabetic footcare, I also rebranded myself from several years earlier. The things I used the $ for were education, website, more tools, more product, curing lights, sundries (towels, files, etc) and insurance

I'm currently leasing a Unit in a strip mall for $2000 a month. I took out a 5 year lease. My cost was roughly $60,000 to start it up. I have 5 employees. 2 Hair Stylists, 2 Barbers and 2 Nail Techs including myself. I bought almost everything new. Some are used. I had to invest in 2 brand new Ped chairs. So many things to start up a business. Think twice people. Make sure you really want to own your own business. I'm 63 and have 2 more years on my lease. I've owned my business for 7 years now. Started with myself and one other renter and spent around $1,000 to start a 350 sqft. salon. Two years later we moved to a 1,200 two doors down and renovation cost around $3,000, plumbing was the majority of the cost. I've got room for four stations but I only have one renter. We are both austic so I'm quite exclusive on who I rent too. I've dealt with a few renters that didn't work out and they only lasted a few weeks. I'm so happy I took the time to be an employee for 9 years, self employed for 13 and a salon owner going on 6 years! I think too many people take risks before they can see the big picture. Next unit to us was going to be a small sandwich place and had to stop on renovation because the pipes weren't to code for their operations and would have cost to much. I was bummed.

I jumped in and learned the lesson of "Grandfather" clause and the added cost of updating ventilation! After the tears and pain of having to close, before lift off, I learned SO MUCH AND IT WAS WORTH THE LESSON LEARNED. Rookie mistake never to happen again. Eyes wide open now. I believe before you invest in a business, it's the clients you have that will determine your success. You must have a loyal, dedicated list of clients. So buy a salon with the client book/database (retiring owner) and have your own following, if starting small. If you want multiple stations in a salon, more than 8, go commission all the way. Booth renting breeds negative competition with large numbers. I started with myself and two other colleagues and it was a disaster. They didn't show for booked clients, had no clients of their own it turns out and they didn't have to buy products with 70% commission to start and build to $75/week rental after 60 days. I learned a lot jumping in, but I can swim and float and learned none of it mattered without a stable clientele base.

Trying to intern at salons that are local in the Los Angeles area is nearly impossible they just won’t do it. As crazy as that sounds it’s true they look at you like what are you doing here? Hahahaha

When I finished my beauty Collge in the mid 90’s . Every salon I walked in own by a different race then mine. I got same response.& let me tell you I seen help wanted on 2. All where by owned by same race. So I started my own. Why I’m thinking as I’m typing maybe why others started opening thier salons. In those’ I see people from a few different races/cultures. Not saying only reasons people from different cultures opened salons. But might be one of the reasons…🤷🏻‍♀️
My uncle has several (Mexican food )restaurants and he don’t only hire Mexicans he hires who will work and work well. And that’s that it’s Mexican food, get me.
I just relocated states. If I where to open a Salon 🥰✝️🙏🦾God willing 🤞🏼and could have enough clientele I would hire “who would seek employment & be qualified and do it well. Not by gender nor race.
Who knows the reason people choose differently. Maybe the owners have their reasons. Maybe 🤔 justified who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

Towels, containers, cleaners, smocks, coal hooks, trash cans.... We have 3 manicurist and one hairstylist and we are in So Cal Like Tracy said....double what you think it's gonna cost ..

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  Před rokem +3

When you're opening a salon, you have to start with the basics and the day to day products/supplies and then go on to the "extras"...
Furniture and equipment (tables, chairs, pedicure station, efiles, dust extractors, UV/LED lamps, table lamps, towels)
Products (disinfectants/cleaning products, acrylic systems, gel systems, polishes, gel polishes, manicure/pedicure products, files/tools)
      Art supplies
Also consider other expenses to budget for (license fees, continuing education, rent, insurance, maintenance, etc)

It was a small room off to the side with excellent ventilation 😁 I got all the paperwork, insurance, tables and products, even advertising done. Had everything set to open😁💖 The evening of August 13, 1999 (opening day) I was rushed to the hospital. I woke from a induced coma 6 months later, I had Guillain Barre Syndrome from a flu shot🤔🙄🤪😐 I lost everything. But I'm glad it was me that got sick and not my 2 kids😁💖
