    COMMON QUESTIONS:
    - How old are you (were you born in '83)? I was born august 3rd 1994 (currently 26), the "83" in alexasunshine83 is for 08/03-83! Basically alexasunshine was taken 😬
    - Why do you thrift? To stop my consumption of fast fashion due to the horrible treatment of workers and the negative environmental impact of waste fast fashion produces. I recommend the documentary The True Cost 👍🏻
    - Are your plants real? NO, all my plants are artificial!

    We have such a cool concept here in Denmark (probably a lot of other places too), where you can rent a stand at a thrift store, and sell your clothes there. The one I was at today was really nice! It’s like depop irl, I guess 🌟

  • @lestranged

    Since you like working with elastic, a tip: Use a zigzag stitch to sew over elastic- it will 'shrink' down better when the elastic retracts. And hems are so much easier if you press it first. (with an iron) You won't need as many pins if it is already ironed into the fold. 19:19 Hems should be double fold. When you only do a single fold, there is still a raw edge on the inside and that will unravel after washing.

    • @alexasunshine83
      @alexasunshine83  Před 4 lety +2

      Ooooh! That makes sense! I haven’t ever done a zigzag stitch so I definitely need to next time !

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged Před 4 lety

      @@alexasunshine83 It also holds the elastic edges down better so it won't roll up along the edges like it can when there is only one line if stitching down the center. But only zigzag if you are sewing the elastic down directly to the fabric, not when you make a casing like you did with the gingham sleeves.

    • @styleago-go3028
      @styleago-go3028 Před 4 lety

      I was going to mention a zigzag stitch as well! In fact, if you don't have enough fabric to double fold your hems you can zigzag over the raw edge of fabric so it doesn't fray when you wash it. Zigzag will be your new bestie now!!

  • @sanni7340
    @sanni7340 Před 3 lety +1

    These turned out really nice! I love that people who are just starting out sewing have videos like this to show them they can just go for it and that it doesn't have to be perfect. I definitely started out on the more "professional" side of sewing videos and, with my perfectionist streak, that kinda led me to being almost too careful and critical on my first projects. Which were nowhere near perfect, even after I ripped out and resewed so many seams! 🙈
    If/when you feel like leveling up your sewing, I'd recommend looking into finishing seams. It'll help the clothes last longer, especially through machine washing/drying, and if the fabric frays perticularly easily it'll be easier to work with if you finish the edges right after cutting. There's a lot of different ways of doing this, but these are the easiest in my opinion:
    1. For hems, do them just like you have been, but just turn the fabric over twice! The raw edge gets encased inside the hem and it looks neat from both sides.
    2. For any raw edges inside, do a zigzag stitch right at the edge. If you haven't cut perfectly straight (🙋‍♀️), don't worry about it, as long as the stitch is between the seam and the edge, it will protect the seam.
    I hope this might be helpful and didn't come off as condescending! I really think you're already doing great, elastics scare me and I wish I had your creativity coming up with projects 🤩

    Yay so happy to see an alexa thrift flip video! Personally love your thrift flips *because* you're not a professional, not only do you try to make it simple but you're not using a ton of sewing terms I don't understand or techniques I have never seen or heard of, it's much less intimidating.
    Everything is explained in layman's terms because you are a layman like us, but with a little more skill and *a lot* more willpower and determination haha.
    Also I'm also lowkey super happy you did a thrift flip because I knew we'd see Autumn doing typical kitty things, like sit on your hard work, pounce on your moving hands and just generally being the adorable and nosy nuisances that cats tend to be whenever you're trying to do any work.
    It reminds me of trying to do my homework as a kid and my cat just wanting to sit on all my papers 😆 and then having to explain to the teacher why my homework had little muddy pawprints all over it 😅

    Absolutely love this Alexa! "Now we do not strive for perfection here, we just strive to survive!" Love how chill you are with your thrift flips, and how you just go with the flow. Totally agree- a garment that is fitted to your likings that you want to reach for more often is more ideal than one that sits in your closet untouched for months on end, or longer!
    This gets me motivated to get back into doing thrift flips of my own- my sewing machine of many many years DIED right at the beginning of the pandemic- and of course, world wide it was basically impossible to purchase a new one at an affordable price that wasn't marked up to exponentially ridiculous prices... thankfully at the end of the summer, I managed to successfully purchased a new one at a fair and affordable price! Woot woot! After I get through my pile of regular "repairs and tears", I'll be back at it with the thrift flips too!
    Glad you had access to your mother's sewing machine. Thanks for posting this! ❤️

    An easier way of finding the centers to make sure you stretch the fabric right is to find the centre of the elastic by folding it in half and then you can even fold it in half again and pin where the halves are. Then do the same with your fabric that you will be stretching the elastic on. Then when you are sewing you just have to stretch it to match the pins to each other :)

    Whenever I try to make my own clothes I know they won’t turn out perfect and that’s ok. It’s so much more special and meaningful when you make them yourself

    Learning how to sew and pattern making was probably one of the best investments in my life. I hope you take some classes because you have a good eye on what you want with your flips ;-) BTW, loved the Tigger Pooh socks!
