    The berserker on Stamford bridge. 44 men died by the steel of his axe until he was stabbed from below by spears. Bear of Shirt. That nameless Norseman would not have worn armor, which makes him even more epic.

    I've visited the site of this Battle, it's about 60 miles from where I live.
    All that there is to remind us is a Stone Monument with the Date engraved on it on the High Street.
    There is a Medieval Stone Bridge over the River Derwent, but the original Footbridge is long gone.
    The Legend say's that Harold Hadrada, told Harold Godwinson, that He had come to take England.
    Godwinson replied, "I give you your Height, that's all".
    Hadradas Height was said to be 7'.
    A Grave was discovered with the remains of a Male, that would've stood close to 7' in Height.
    No one could prove if it was Harald Hadrada or not.
    Several Weeks later, the Battle of Hastings took place, where Godwinson lost to William, Duke of Normandy.
    The irony is, William was the Great Grandson of Rollo, (Rolf), the Walker, granted the Northern lands of the Franks to protect them from Viking Invasion.
    So really, the Vikings have never left England.

      @LDN EDD What? Where did you get that from? Contemporary history shows that the Normans feinted a retreat. Since that wasn't exactly seen as honorable for one's reputation in those times (with particularity in the early middle ages), it's thought that the Normans drummed up the whole "we thought William ded" to preserve their reputation after the battle.

    • @jameskirk255
      @jameskirk255 Před 5 lety +9

      Harold's eagerness to do battle with William was his true downfall. He succeeded in Wales and Yorkshire through speed. His remaining brothers pleaded with him to allow them to meet William on the battlefield while he raised more men. Had his brothers been defeated, William's forces would have been severely depleted and in serious trouble if met by Harold freshly raised troops.

      It was a completely different Army at Hastings. The South Eastern Lords and Fyrd fought there, The North Eastern Lords and Fyrd fought at Stamford Bridge. Only Harold and his House Carls were at both, hence why he was able to cover so much ground in such a short space of time.

      Hardrada invaded Yorkshire because the local population were the descendents of earlier vikings, and were more sympathetic to the Norse than to Godwinson from Wessex. Years later this was still the case that the locals would support a norse invasion against the Normans. William the Bastard harried the north in 1069/70 to end once and for all any chance of succour to norse invaders by indigenous northmen, effectively committing genocide. 20 years later when Domesday was written, the north was still laid to waste, having even then only 25% of the men than had been there in 1066. The Bastard apparently feared he was going to go to hell for his crimes, and feared death. He is reported to have ruminated on and repented of his many sins, transgressions and cruelties at the end.

Also the wooden bridge depicted is too wide - most of the stuff I have read states that the bridge was only wide enough for 2 to 3 men to cross standing shoulder to shoulder; this is probably why the lone Viking was able to hold it on his own for so long and kill as many Saxons as he did. Sandokan, if you get the chance, PLEASE do the Battle Of Mount Badon in 500 AD. The place where, according to legend, the REAL King Arthur (or at least his real, historical inspiration) led a unified army of Romano-British, Welsh, and Picts to defeat the Saxon invaders. The overall army was under the command of the general Ambrosius Aurelianus, but under his command was apparently a young Romano-British warrior prince named Artorius Castus, who was the historical inspiration for Arthur Pendragon. I love moments in history where the lines between history and myth/legend become blurred, and this particular one is at the top of my favorites list.
