Jason Easthope "Easty". Pretty sure I "eyeballed" Easty when he flew a RNZ Skyhawk over Muja Power Station, between the stacks in the 1990's. It was so low I could see him in the cockpit as I was standing on the roof of the Power Station.

Unbelievable you are still, not for long, flying Alphas. I was U.S. Navy and my squadron transitioned from Alphas to Charlies in 1991. Even the Blue Angels have been flying Charlies for years and they get the oldest airframes in the fleet. Give your maintenance team a thumbs up for me.

They have been upgrade extensively over the years including some centre barrel replacements. Rasonably comparable to c's and d"s over all. None the less they have done well to keep them going for so long. Well done RAAF.

The last alpha models built were Australian jets in 1991. Also, not having to land on a carrier has helped with the service life. I believe that they were going to replace all of the centre barrels in every Horent but only did 16 Hornets because there was no cracking in the ones that they replaced.

I was fortunate to visit for an entire week with Ross Fox (dec) RAAF and Ross’ wife Vicki in Washington DC prior to Aus taking delivery of the Hornets. At the time Ross gave me a hornet trifold brochure such as you may expect to receive from a salesman selling a holden car. I still have that trifold brochure. Ross invited me to go with him to Spery in St Louis where our flight simulator was built. However Ross was too busy with RAAF/Hornet business so I said no to St Louis. Before I left Ross and Vicki took me to the Beach Boys concert on the Mall 4th July
now that was a blast. Thanks for the tour of the grand old hornet. I loved it. Keep up the good work.

As a 12 Year Old I remember watching the 60 minutes presentation back in 1985 (Australian version) on Sunday Night. Linked below.
I have no doubt, that like myself, thousands of school children were in awe of Ross and the other fighter pilots in this 17 minute presentation title "The Right Stuff". I even remember discussing it with friends the next day, and we started in search of computer games on the commodore 64, like "JET" to test our metal . . .lol
It just so happens I've read "Fighter Pilot" by Mac Serge Tucker", and in His autobiography he writes how he was taken under Ross's wings both before and after joining the RAAF as pilot. Even venturing out to fly the very simulator you've mentioned above ! Incredible story. Serge writes that he was also there that fateful night, and later drove Vicki out to Hornet Hill. He even mentions some of the other pilots lost in 3 squadron such as JP.
