why do switches have only 8 16 24 48 and so on number of ports..?

Switches are normally wired up internally in pairs, so the vast majority have an even number of ports. They are a few exceptions to this, such as 5-port switches, with a 5th port added on which is intended to be connected to another switch. - JG
