      Everything about a big bird, in a small bird body.
      Big bird bites, big bird energy, big bird attention.
      BUT; you also get big bird humor, big bird engagement, and big bird personality.
      It seems like all that energy finds outlets in creative and otherwise chaotically hilarious behavior and play.
      It's pretty much every up and down of big birds, in a small bird chassis that reached some form of critical avian energy density.

      @@tnpcook "reached some form of critical avian energy density"
      By far the best description I have literally ever heard.

      @tnpcook Před 3 lety +11

      @@Fivesaflock When the energy density goes critical, it manifests as a hopping caique, or a kugelblitz style black hole.
      However, if the ensuing explosion overcomes gravity, it will instead expand to form a sulfur crested cockatoo, which may cycle it's fuel over a greater lifespan.
      Parrots are pretty much astrophysics with feathers and a similar level of explosive noise.

    My Caique is 9 months old. He was practicallly wild when we picked him up from the breeder. We've had him for 4 months now and he is the loveliest bird..ever! He is playful, loving, clever and relatively gentle now. Just took him a little while to learn to trust us and to learn how hard to bite so that it doesn't hurt us. He is a real lttle gem. If he bites a little too hard, I just gently tap his tail - he seems to understand this. We love him so much!

    I have 5 Caiques, two white bellied and 3 black headed. They are everything you said and more. Luckily my birds get along. They are fully flighted and are out most of the day. They each have their own oversized cage for naps, night and when I have to confine them when I’m not home or I’m cooking. I usually have one or all hanging off of me all day. I play with them and use foraging toys when they’re out. They can be noisy. I think it’s flock mentality. Yes, my toy budget is huge! I also feed chopped seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit and pellets at different times during the day. I would suggest that if someone thinks they want a caique to see if there’s a rescue close by to actually get to spend some time with one. There are usually caiques in shelters due to the fact people only see the beauty in the bird or videos of the cute antics. Caiques can be nippy and they can hurt. The other thing I don’t think you mentioned is they are little poop machines due to their high metabolism and activity level. Thank for talking about caiques. They are a very big bird in a small package..☺️

      @Jan Kelley Having both BH and WB do you see a temperament difference? I have always held that the BH are not as much "people Birds" as the WB are. Not that they cant be, just that they are more driven to play or explore than to be with a person than the WB are.

    • @1hawaii21
      @1hawaii21 Před 3 lety +3

      William Parson, my Caiques do demonstrate some differences. My white bellied are very self confident when confronted with new things, people, and food. They also seem to be a bit more nippy. My black headed are beyond sweet with my husband and me. My black headed are also more noisy. One of them really never stops. She makes all kinds of sounds from normal caique sounds to imitating some of the wild birds, kisses, wolf whistles and laughing. They are a little reticent with all things new except toys. Like people they have their own personalities. I’m also fortunate in that they all get along. Hope that helps.

The empty can has become his mortal enemy and it doesnt matter where the can is, either in the middle of the room on the floor or in his cage, my bird spends hours and hours chasing and killing his cans. I have two Caique brothers who are almost two years old. Very, very high energy and maybe it's because they're still young but they need to be monitored constantly otherwise they will find and destroy things they shouldn't. Your video was fantastic. Bigger cage the better (bar spacing important). They wrack up the bills with all the toys for sure and you really can't skimp on the toys because of how high-energy they are. Also, they are super smart and they continue to surprise me with the things they figure out. Your description of noise level was spot on. Usually quiet but they have their moments for 15 + minutes a day which consists of very LOUD screaming. Otherwise they are quiet birds. I love how open they are to trying new foods and they are generally fearless birds.

    This is a great video and really hammered home to me, that I probably would not be able to properly care for a Caique they way they need/deserved to be treated. I was obsessed with them the last couple of months - as you said in the description it was via viral videos in most part - and really this video has just hammered it home, that if I did get a Caique it probably would not be fair on he/she and me to not be able to give it full attention because of work/life etc. Still though - I would like to try and arrange my life around having a parrot at some point, once I do alot of research/investigation in the future. I own 4 Parakeets, they work out great for me. I think they are absolutely darling and since I am always occupied they do good without me constantly being with them as they have each other. They are also easy to handle, bites don't hurt (not to me anyways), easy to take care of and clean up after. The only downside to Parakeets is they get sassy vocally. They will have their loud moments where they are absolutely losing their minds especially while playing or if they see or hear something that alarms them or that they don't like and if you tell them to shush they just go to the edge of the cage look at you and squawk at you like they're telling you off. I love them so much it's hilarious they have such big personalities.

    Also I will say that they are very loud if you have two and not just one. My parents have one too. My mom think she have damaged her ears from our caiques actually. So get one and not two unless you don’t care about noise. But I will say that their energy level is difficult to keep up with if you don’t have two and they bite a lot in their play because they like to wrestle.

They will depend on each other's comfort more than on yours, so it's a little easier emotion wise that way, but there's also fighting :P definitely nevertheless ever start out with ANY rainforest parrot or any speciality bird. Hi, great video, may I ask you a couple of questions? I had a male budgie for 14 years until he passed away, now I'm considering to get a parrot again. I'm trying to figure out if Caique is a good choice for me. I was perfectly fine with what a budgie was, all his energy, behaviour and stuff, but now I want a slightly larger bird. How is Caique compared to budgie? Does it require a lot more maintanence and care in comparison?
    Another thing I'm interested in is how Caiques behave when guests come to your place? For example, my budgie absolutely didn't care what people were around, he could land on anybody, was super playful with everyone and never bit anyone except for his owners :) But my relatives' Cuban amazon parrot basically tolerated only one person - my aunt and was hostile to everyone else, her husband my uncle, their children and especially any guest that happened to visit them so he needed to be locked in his cage. How do Caiques treat guests and different family members?

    • @Fivesaflock
      @Fivesaflock  Před 3 lety +4

      A Caique is definitely a big step up from a Budgie but if you're willing to put in the hours and work extra, a Caique is extremely rewarding.
      How they behave with guests really depends down to their individual personality. I've met Caiques that absolutely hate strangers, but mine tolerates everybody except my brother, who she absolutely hates and will try to chase and attack. What I believe it boils down to is if you give enough attention to your Caique when you have guests over or not. These birds get so jealous super easily, and if they misplace jealousy with your guests, they can turn nasty.

    Love my caique and would never consider giving her up, but my god she's the the most adorable little bipolar monster in existence. Luckily I've learned to read her body language and vocalizations and now know when to back off or change my approach before she uses that needle on her face to leave a small, sometimes bloody mark. Her cage is in my home office and I have perches and toys hanging from the ceiling and she uses every single one and goes to town, so if you don't want to actively play with them all day, you need to provide a ton of different toys. 96% of the time she's a wonderful gem, but that 4% would make me hesitate to recommend a bird like her to most people, even bird lovers.
    One major positive: caiques are known to be able to bond with multiple people in a household and are less prone to finding a single person to like at the exclusion of everyone else. Ours is equally excited to see either my wife or myself, which is great.

    I had a male Quaker until he passed away recently. I found a breeder that is raising BH caiques and I was going to get one but after reading the reviews and comments I don't think I am qualified to get a caique and will get another Quaker instead. I am disappointed, because I really would've loved a caique but I think I stick with a Quaker.

    Great video. I like how you balance the pros and cons which I think is sorely needed as many will override reality with, “Eh, I’ll learn along the way.” to then have to give the bird up.
    When you’re handling it is it biting and you just know how to minimize the intensity or is it just playfully nipping.?
    Maybe I missed it but how long do these cuties live (which can be another factor when deciding to own).

    • @Fivesaflock

    I worked with birds for a little bit. Our Greenwing Macaw "Buttons" was a bit of an asshole and would 100% obliterate any buttons you had on your shirt. A Blue and Gold Macaw who was mildy temperamental depending on the person. A pair of genius level IQ African Grey. A few other birds and finally... A White Bellied Caique. I absolutely loved that bird. He was always so happy to be handled and didnt seem to have an ounce of aggression in him. I was a little sad to see him go 😢 but happy he went to a good home
