  • The good news for Mazda Australia and a lot of contented CX-5 owners is that an official replacement for the popular CX-5 has been confirmed. The bad news is that not much information has been released regarding the design or name of the new vehicle, and Mazda Headquarters may choose to alter it.This is a major problem for the local company because in 2023, sales of the CX-5 will account for more than 23% of the brand. It was the third-best-selling mid-size SUV in terms of sales, behind the Mitsubishi Outlander and Toyota RAV4. Despite Mazda's best efforts to keep things secret, we do know a great deal about this significant car. Finding a place in the constantly changing Mazda lineup is a major challenge for the CX-5. Mazda is spearheading the adoption of its successful "semi-premium" strategy in Australia with the launch of its "Large Product Family" of sporty, premium-positioned automobiles. The CX-8, CX-9, and CX-90 have already been replaced, and the CX-70 will probably follow soon.
The two-row, mid-size CX-60 has already arrived and will replace the CX-5 in the current lineup along with this change. There are other reports that the CX-5 will simply be phased out due to the availability of the somewhat smaller but more robust CX-50 in China and the USA.
Though Mazda has acknowledged that the CX-5 will be replaced, they haven't said in what capacity, therefore that is incorrect. It is expected that the new CX-5 would stick with its current front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive chassis rather than switching to the new "Large Products" rear-biased all-wheel drive design. This implies that the vehicle's foundation would probably be different.
This will be the biggest difference between the CX-5 and CX-60 given the existing gap between the two, and it should allow for a significant pricing premium. The current CX-5 range starts at $36,590 for a front-wheel drive Maxx model and reaches out at $55,100 for the Akera all-wheel drive. This puts it behind the entry-level CX-60 Evolve, which is priced from $60,550. Perhaps the most significant question is whether the new CX-5 will even go by the moniker CX-5.
