ANYONE THAT THINKS JERRY AINT THE HEART AND SOUL OF ALL THIS MADNESS IS CRAZY. no matter what there is no other band that can hold a stick to any of their music
+Philip Williams well, I'm a big deadhead, and went to a lot of shows, but let's be honest here--this song, on this date, is the best they have to offer. There is a lot of crap out there too.
In truth, what makes this, and the other May of '77 Dead shows so friggin' great is Betty Cantor-Jackson. This show is not even in the Dead vault and this, her copy, is the reason we have this insanely good soundboard.
Never been to a dead show, I'm only 25, but i burnt my breakfast grooving to this in the kitchen while scrambling some eggs Guess im dancing to the cornerstore
Jerry songwriting live...hearing a groove in his head and executing it to near perfection with a band that supported his genius better than any band in history. This is so good...Jerry just channeling and becoming the music that came from his soul. Dead at their best....Thanks Jer..
@@justinkagan6222 I was referencing the improvisational capacity of Jerry here. Hearing a jam in his head and making it happen.. lol.I know it is a cover but I thought it was a Van Halen cover..JK! I did not know who originally wrote it so thanks for the info!
Lots of people cap on Grateful Dead and rightfully so I guess... Most of these people love their classic rock but they just can't or don't "get" The Dead.... Maybe It takes a particular ear or having grown up to it, or as in my case, a specific incident to turn a person on to the magic of their music... One of the 'gratest' things about this band was the way their sound changed over the years... Sometimes the music doesn't even sound like the same band whatsoever... Take this song for example... Listen to this version a couple 'dozin' times and then listen to the same song from Binghamton, 2 May, 1970 and at times I swear it sounds like a band from a different planet... Both versions are the same song by the same band (+/- three band members) but they are both completely different arrangements and both are absolutely stellar! How did you get into the dead's music? I was taken in 1983, at age 14, by an older neighbor to a Dead Show, at the time only knowing that GD was a band that had an album: "Skeletons From The Closet"... He kept telling me how much fun it would be... Well it was not at all what I expected and I thought the people there were really weird but I had a good time nevertheless... However, it would be a couple more years until I actually "GOT IT"... I was at another deadhead friend's house and we were taking bong hits when she popped in a tape of 5-9-77 and music never stopped came on first... she then left the room to take a call leaving just me with the band... And from that night on, my life's course would forever be changed... I feel so fortunate to have had the final 10 years of memories to cherish forever... Thank You Jerry Et al...
This is great - as is the Pembroke Pines FL '77 Dick's Picks Vol 3 . The groove jam starting at about 4:05 here sends you all sorts of directions. See ya in the streets!
I was just watching the video of Jagger and Bowie's cover of this song. I had to come and listen to the Dead's version, so I could get my ears back to normal.😁
Absolutely. This recording contains the finest example of Bobby's genius, perhaps rivaled only by his rhythm solos in the 8/6/71 "Hard to Handle," 1/2/70 "Mason's Children," and "The Eleven" from Live/Dead. You should check out all of these amazing Bobby moments.
"They certainly did make it their own." - stoned out Converge fan friend of mine from Worcester back in college. More than once. This will win anyone with a pair of ears over.
Jerry I went to take a shit a second ago and didn't have any toilet paper. then I found this CZcams video. and i wiped my ass with it. problem is, this video is shit too. so I wasn't sure what was what.
Sorry but this jam alone does in fact make 5/8/77 more than just a really good show that had great sound quality. Or a show inferior to some of those around it. Peeeeeshaw. This is indescribably good. Weir and Jerry finishing each others' chords on those twin takedowns is crazy. At 7:02 Billy says 'Let's go' and they're really off.
if this doesnt make you move your feet, you should turn em back in to the nearest groove authority, because theres a kid somewhere out there that needs em more than you.
I love you guys. I need only spend 5 seconds pokin around hendrix or clapton videos and everyone argues over who can do it better, and there are loads of dislikes. I come to dead videos and everyone's so positive and enthusiastic, and rarely dislikes. Don't tell me this town aint got no heart

This version has been "fixed" a bit, 'cause in it's original take, Weir comes in too soon and they have to play a couple bars longer to get back into it. Still, it's a great song till the very end, TY for posting it, whoever you are ...
This is a pretty good jam.. I have the studio version on Terrapin Station but never heard this one before.. This is one of the GREAT things of the 21st Century, so easy to listen to high quality bootleg Dead that people forgot what it was like before.
16 Shows ..Jerry is MY GOD ..My 1st Show was 1979 ..NY .I was 18 ..my older Sister and her Biker CLUB took me with my 16 yr old GF ..Hi KIM :) Now I am 61 ..still partying with Jerry.....Jerry and I are better than Vampires ! Althea told me .....

not sure what it is about it but that little section around 12:50 is just super pleasurable. I'm not a huge dead head- not yet anyway- but this show and this jam is pretty hard to beat.

Jerry at the top of his game. Doesn't get much better. The Dead embrace and destroy disco at the same time.
I was at this concert and loved it but didn’t realize until so many years later how truly exceptional it was.
Same here.
Lucky You!!!
My favorite live recording of all time, always gets me grooving
This is probably the best version you are ever going to hear of this song. Legendary!
Fuk yeah
This is the only Grateful Dead performance I have heard where I feel Donna was an indispensable part of the sound.

I love Bobby's beautiful false start.
He has a few of those
Me too... when I turn people on to this I always explain it to them first. lol
I once listened to this after eating one too many rice krispies and saw jerry floating over jupiter shooting lasers out of his guitar
lol
Jerry is throwing lighting bolts that would make Zeus blush.
"All we need is music, sweet music!" Absolutely, goddamn right!!!
