Lyrics:
1) Back Then
my old highway exit looks so much different
but the water tower still looks the same
what if the town runs dry and no one else needs us
another power outage in the rain
I didn’t tell anyone I was coming home and I stayed for 3 months
spent the summer in South Carolina doing what I want
clouds as tall as mountains, it was humid as can be
Carolina sun was burning up everything
(everything)
2) Sidelines
I was on the field on a Friday night
3rd string, had to swallow my pride
I got thrown in on a 4th and 5
just so they could take a knee
oh I was only thinking about my 6 string
I remember coach tryna break us down
2 a days had us passin out
this week we gotta play away
home team just came from state
lost by 6, that's the worst way
damn, bus ride back had a sour taste
had a revelation bout where I wanna be
I was drained of patience and my energy
just to find out I played the wrong game
I was thinking bout my 6 string
heatwave ain't ever takin breaks
we would find shade in the cemetery
drove a couple hours to the angel oak
heavy conversation with a little smoke
mama's cookin up corn meal grains
daddy's yellin at the football game
I was upstairs tryna make a name
I was upstairs with my 6 string
3) Sandhills:
white hot sand in my socks again
fire ants aimlessly biting in
saved again by calamine
another bite
this happens time to time
I’m spotted white
maybe it's just where I’m from
I had always had guard up
but hypocrites keep strollin in
and rubbin on my shoulder
white hot sand in my socks again
4) The View:
I found an arrowhead down by the creek
bulldozer stirred up the orange clay beneath
they put in a new high school that opens next week
they say it's got new technology that cannot compete
but I doubt it
I’m sure they'll find something to blame
I doubt it'll change
they put in a new garden store down by the church
after the service we go by some dirt
it went from a plastic bag back to the earth
I’d like to think I’m nothing different
but I doubt it
I’m sure I’ll find something to blame
I doubt it'll change
(ou)
5) Said Goodbye To Rock n Roll:
said goodbye to rock n roll
baby said it made me cold
but instead, i tell myself
that it’s all just for my health
but instead, i tell myself
that it’s all just for my health
spent a decade on the road
with a suitcase for a home
better rest up for the show
so say goodbye to rock n roll
better rest up for the show
so say goodbye to rock n roll
(the show called life that is)

Heck yes
Shout to all the small town ppl who don’t forget where they’re from 🙌
My man literally kills every genre he dives into wtf
this doesn't sound like a compliment lmao
@@salad_tasty but it is...
the potential of 'Omaha' realized 🙏
fr so diverse, he's amazing
🤣😂🤣💯🔥🔥🔥
What a perfect representation of the lazy glory of growing up in South Carolina. I knew Chaz in college, but not super well. Glad to see some familiar faces and places in this. Really appreciative of his work.
I'm from Columbia, SC and. l love this. This is our people at it's finest
Cola standup!
Columbi-yeah!
Holy shit this hits. The Aaron Graves mural immediately made me cry. Bandana man, the big hydrant, lowblock, Josh Robinson ❤ it’s as if my nostalgia was turned into an album. Thank you 🙏 🙏
Bandana man? That’s Dog West!
proud to say im from here knowing yall fellers are
Eyy, John, surprising to see you in my music threads! Very cool to see you share origins with Toro!
SO cool
this guy changed my life with his songs. wish i could tell him face to face…dont know how many memories that i made while listening his albums, shared many memories…especially with the difference, cola, rose quartz, so many details…it goes on and on. his songs are so underrated and he deserves really much more than that. I REALLYYYY WISH THAT I COULD SEE HIM LIVE ONE DAY. LOVE YOU BRO
Same here. 🤝🏻🙏🏻
On a side note, does anyone know where the "Iron Giant" head is located at? Thanks ☝🏻
Same here honestly. Really need to see him in person
@@HonestHoel ME TOOOOOOO. idk if on this tour he has ever been to eu or not😭
@@dapufunky where are you from? I live in France!

In tears with just how incredibly beautiful this project is.
Having grown up in NE Columbia around the same time as Chaz, this is so awesome to see. Jimmy's Mart, Baskin Robbins, and Rush's on Two Notch were staples of my adolescence. An incredible ode to our city.
Same here, this is hitting me in the feels. I miss the days of setting up the dj and band gear and playing a random house party around 5 points
This! Such a love letter to the city. Now I’m homesick 😢
Damn fam...turned on the waterworks with this one. Tears of joy.
Cola girl here. What a treat! Thank you. You've captured this town beautifully. Sittin' here in my trailer with the temps of 98+, This film is hitting just right.
Heavy Elliott Smith vibes in voice. Most relaxing stuff I found since discovering radar bros
who else up bawling their eyes out to this rn & feels life is so odd and weirdly existential but at least music exists
Born and raised in northeast cola. What an homage to our wonderful home. Sandhills, chicken man, jimmys mart, and so many other classic columbia staples. What a special project this is. I hope those who have never been get a glimpse of how much joy and peace this place brings us. ☮️
This makes me nostalgic for an American childhood I never lived. That's a huge props to the power of music.
I was falling in love with a girl I was like 20yo with "anything in return", then I was living with her "Boo Boo" era 27yo, now i'm 30 she's gone last month and Toro y Moi launch new music, a new era in my life is coming... Thanks for everything!!!.
hearing toro y moi talking about his high school football experience in freaking oklahoma? was not expected. love this.
Columbia, SC ?
This is what I like to imagine Nick Drake would sound like if he grew up in the modern American South
I miss my home in Columbia. Such a good place to be from.
😎You had me at a hot dog and coke on the tailgate💪🏼
I wonder if the locals know what he put South Carolina on the map with his magic. When I was there had to pay my respects by bumping his jams 😎
Paints a haunting image that takes me right back to iowa. Masterful lyricism about the garden store abd the dirt. Big Ugly Casanova meets Bon Iver vibes
Toro excels in all genres because he's actually musical. A lot of artists today have gone so mainstream and lack identity. Not to mention they aren't even in it for the music. People that love music will always be able to show it in their music. Love to see it!
The most Americana shit ive ever heard and seen. Chaz has done it again.
This project is so beautiful, I can't help but want to shed a tear. Perfect start to the New York fall season.
Yup this will be my fall go-to here in SEA as well.
Absolutely Excellent! First experience! So happy for the discovery of this awesome band!
I remember being a freshman at USC in like 2009 and hearing the hipsters in Art History class talk about how they'd been hangin' out with Chaz...starstruck!
Same! He shot a music video for blessa at a college house I rented with some friends
Toyo Y Moi
Saved my life.
Chad you really hit the mark on this one. Makes me miss the small town I use to live in Ohio. I recently left Ohio to go live with my wife in Japa, seeing this just reminds me of all the memories I had there. Highschool, girlfriends and the weird shorts we use to record on our video-recorder. My dad has gotten really sick from liver failure and leaving him there has been a really hard pill to swallow, but thank you for bring a little piece of joy while im on this journey. I will never forget my little life in ohio and its always a treat to go and visit.
Thanks for having the courage to revisit sh*t in your life and make it cool for us to take a peek. It inspires all of us to treat the seemingly banal shit in our own lives with new perspectives. Also there's some real common shit that folks in the South can relate to here that's just not anywhere else.
Mann Chaz don’t miss, every new genre he just kills it
This feels so good. Having grown up in mid size suburban town, this feels so familiar. Great video work, great songs.
He doesn’t miss
Chaz reppin Columbia....love it!
great project and songs, talks to the core.
Mann this is so good!! Folk/Bluegrass Toro is something we all needed
If I didn't already live here, I'd have to go there. I'm so nostalgic for a place I've only lived in for three years.
Love to see my city portrayed artistically. I feel nostalgic.
I moved to LA form Atlanta and this makes me so homesick
Columbia pride!!! :,))) love my hometown
Back in 2014, I had the chance to hang w Chaz outside the 930 Club in DC. He had just finished a set, but he was gracious enough to sign some items for me and shared a valuable piece of wisdom. He reminded me that life becomes much more enjoyable when we're not overly fixated on collecting shiny material possessions. This project rings true to that sentiment.
This man done out Alex G'd (Sandy)
This may end up my most watched video of the year
Imagine a toro y moi and Alex G collabo album
Man I love my home state. As someone who was born in NJ and grew up in SC, there is nowhere else I’d rather be. The people, the culture, the scenery all made me fall in love with this great state, and Chaz does a great job illustrating all of this!
I forgot Chaz was from Columbia. I'm a Carolina kid too, mostly NC though. Love this project!
This video brings tears of joy to my eyes, what wonderful and pure art this is. Amazing tunes, love watching you express yourself bro. Been a big fan for years and I love to continue to support you. Thanks for sharing:)
Its the lay back country tracks in a modest mouse album. So much heart and life. Keep on doing it man. You're music is appreciated
beautiful
DOG WEST AND CHICKEN MAN REPRESENTING THE 803 BEAUTIFULLY
i dont ever listen to this kind of music but this was just...beautiful
This has captured the bittersweet feeling ive had about moving back to my hometown in VA from los angeles
Absolutely the best pieces of music I've heard so far this year, and amazingly poignant and vivid videos to go along with them. I've never been to South Carolina before but I hope it's all like this.
Unbelievable. No one as effortlessly cool as Chaz Bear. Knocked it out of the park.
Say goodbye to rock n roll vid had me crackin up reminds me where I grew up everybodys chewin
i feel blessed to be alive at the same time this music exists.
Any day with new Chaz tunes is a good day. And growin up back n' forth between NC and SC, this just hits home.
They built a garden store right near the church. After the service we’ll go buy some dirt. It went from a plastic bag right back to the earth. And I like to think I’m not that much different
This was beautiful. Thank you.
fuckin aye man. why does he know how to hit the feels button any chance he gets. ive been listening to chaz since i was 14. im 29 now. and he has never dissappointed. his music is a true reflection i feel of the years in his life. his albums refltect on the times hes going through while recording these albums and this one right here is all about being blindsided by the tours the recording. the limelight. and not going back to hsi roots. and it makes me feel thats hes humble in the sense. that hes not like all other artists where hes documenting his return home. he shows where he comes from.
What a time capsule this will be for me. Glad to see footage of the hydrant at least while it was coming down and Richland Fashion Mall that's set to be torn down as it is and rebuilt soon. A lot of Columbia has changed in the past decade, and it's going to change a lot more soon. But this is the way I'll remember the city being.
Nothing could be finer.
Toro diggin into their folk and country roots! Crushing every genre!
Enjoyed the songs and video....lighthearted and true.
Man, I absolutely loved that. Reminds me of being back home in Forest Acres.
Spent all morning driving through Ohio cornfields to this and it was so perfect. The video is even better! Toro is maybe my all time favorite musical project, and getting better every year :)
I'm incredibly impressed by the tender and thoughtful songwriting in this project. Chaz has truly outdone himself, delivering his most sincere and introspective work yet. The visuals are refreshingly genuine, and perfectly complement the overall experience of living in the south.,. Surprisingly, it doesn't evoke nostalgia; instead, it feels deeply rooted in the present moment. We often spend a lot of time trying to escape our origins and the past versions of ourselves, but what we truly need is to find our way back home and spend a summer in the Carolina's.
thnx, Chaz
This is incredible 😭
So proud to see my hometown shown like this!! Makes me so happy
The lingerie novelty store that was also featured in the "Still Sound" music video!
A month ago I moved back home to my Appalachian hometown cause I missed my roots so this is really hitting
Can't help, but think about EThel cain's american teenager imagery and ambience. Killed it, Chaz
Sumter, SC is my 2nd home but 1st in my heart. I stopped by unprompted earlier this year and this hits hard. Great stuff as always.
Just drove by that exit too and man it’s developed so much since I moved to Charlotte in 2016
Toro with that Midwest rural driiip
Those are my stomping grounds too, way to not forget where you came from Chaz!
Nice Shot
i dropped what i was doing instantly to sit and watch this, and this album is so beautiful and down to earth.... seriously amazes me that, each album you make has a different feel, almost a different genre each and every time, but your own personal interpretation of it
first heard Rose Quartz over the speaker in a clothes shop in 2014, i've carried your music with me and adored every new release ever since that day, thank you for all these years, and im always excited for more!!
Well said
Ineffable
I don't think there's another artist out there who can consistently experiment with multiple genres while maintaining a strong connection with their fans better than Toro y Moi.
One of the coolest
I usually don't get excited for this type of music, but I had to check it out because it's Toro Y Moi. So good! I love "Back Then", "Sidelines" and "The View". I loved the video for "Say Goodbye to Rock n Roll". Great film, even better music!
Gosh I love this. 🫶🏽
We are in the good old times
This is beautiful
“I was upstairs, trying to make a name”
I felt that.
soundtrack for the weekend. gonna be a great one now, thanks Chaz
I still listen to watch and listen to still sound and new beat every day forever longing for a love I never had
Chaz really shows you what life is about In real life there is no FOMO in real life you do what your heart desires not the mind or you will hate yourself in the end. THANKS CHAZ!!!
Being born from Aiken, SC this hit.🖖🏾💙
From Beaufort sc. my man you are authentic in these songs!!
Shout out to Dog West and Ernest Lee, miss you guys
Never thought I would see this Friday Night Lights version of Toro, but I like it :)
I love you TYM thank you for being there always
Just needed to give my respects and thanks to you, Mr Chazzy. Your musically genuinely puts a smile on my face, every time.. And gets me shaking my ass❤❤
Chaz means so much to us here in SC
The best man
i love you toro y moi
Beautiful
What’s crazy about this film is when i was young in my photography journey, i took photos that capture this exact feeling. Same emotion and aesthetic. This really takes me back when things were easier and everything was beautiful 😩. Much respect
