Upgrade your PS4 controllers to USB type C

  • In today's video, Ian covers how to upgrade your PS4 controller to USB type C. THIS IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK. We'll be fabricating a custom PCB to replace the original USB breakout board inside the PS4 controller. While that may sound difficult, it really isn't too bad with a bit of patience.
    Due to popular demand, the casual coders tindie store is at www.tindie.com...! Order boards today!
    Check out the GitHub Repo: github.com/12i...
    To do this, you'll need:
    A soldering Iron with solder and flux
    A handful of components listed on the GitHub repo (varies by controller)
    A multimeter
    A hotplate, clothing iron, or even a pan that you don't care about
    A set of fine or precision files
    A Phillips head screwdriver, plastic card, and thin-tip tweezers.
    Open up the PS4 controller and remove the USB breakout board. Be careful not to damage the ribbon cable. The numbers on the board you have will dictate what board files to manufacture through your favorite board house.
    Purchase the components listed for that particular board, and use your solder paste to populate the board. Lay down some paste and squish the components into the paste. Then, set it on your hot surface and get the solder to melt. Use the multimeter to check for shorts, and hand-solder the USB C connector to the other side. Once again check for shorts, and resemble the controller. Use the files to get the USB C connector to fit.

JDS-001 has been put on the back-burner due to mistakes in the PCB and a very low demand for it. This is so cool! I've been thinking about doing this for a while but have not had the know-how to do so! I was also thinking of adding some sort of storage in the empty spaces on the case, so you could plug the controller into any PC and have access to all your games and the like. I figured this would be a cool idea considering USB-c is quite fast and you could have everything you need to game in one place! Maybe you could even build a bootable USB onto the storage and quite literally be able to play your games on any computer without the need to install any extra drivers or anything! It was just a thought but this is such a fantastic project and I would love to be able to buy one of these boards!

    As others pointed out, the screw hole is essential to keep the connector in place. Also there are several controller revisions and the various charging PCBs are not all compatible.

    So what exactly is the point of adding the resistors? I'm still learning circuits.

    • @CasualCodersOfficial
      @CasualCodersOfficial  Před 2 lety +1

      The 0Ω resistors are really just placeholders. They allow you to impedance match the USB data lines. Really not necessary here, but it could possibly help reduce data loss at higher speed data transmissions.
      The 5.1kΩ resistors are a part of the USB Type C spec, and allow you to connect a USB Type C to C cable. If those get left out, the USB controller has no clue what was connected, and It simply won't provide power or data connections.
      Hope that helps!

    Hello sir, I'm in search for some answer, sorry to bother a bit out of topic here but, Do you think is possible to make an upgrade on the android version of the Razer Kishi v1 cointroller from only charge type c to type c 2.0 at least? that way we might be able to connect an external display? like with an adaptor? MHL supported of course

    Really late, but would you do a video for a usb c mod for the g pro x superlight? Ive been looking all over and i cant find one

    • @CasualCodersOfficial
      @CasualCodersOfficial  Před rokem +1

      We don't have a G Pro X superlight to take apart and mod, but it certainly should be be doable. The worst parts are that the MicroUSB port is soldered directly to the motherboard, so it doesn't support a drop-in replacement. Following that, I watched a teardown of the mouse and don't see any nice large test points for the USB Connector, so you'd likely be required to tap in on the edge of a resistor, or scrape away green solder mask and solder to a trace on the PCB.
      The basic principle here would be to tear down the mouse, remove the microUSB Connector, acquire a couple USB C breakout boards such as the ones we sell, or the ones Adafruit sells, then reconnect the Vcc, D+, D-, and Gnd lines back to the correct locations. Final step is figuring out how to adequately secure the connector back to the board, and reassemble.
      Hope that helps!

    • @CasualCodersOfficial

      To install the new board, you're going to have to take your controller apart (again, if it's not already apart), and remove all of the back plastics. That includes the white hold-down bar, the light spreader, and light diffuser. Then unscrew the original charge board.
      Set the new board roughly in the old one's place, and take note of the interference, Since the USB C connector is larger than the MicroUSB Connector, you're going to need to file away some material from the opening. Start by gently filing outward from the center of the hole, along the horizontal axis of the controller. Continually test fit as you go, looking at the size and shape of the USB C Connector. Once you've matched the correct width of the connector, begin filing the entire opening upward towards the light bar. Go slow, and test fit often. Once enough space has been made, you should be able to gently slot the new board into place, add a dab of hot glue if you feel it necessary, reconnect all the cables and plastics, then reassemble. Let me know if anything is unclear, and I can do my best to clarify.

    micro usb is so flimsy and breaks easily. When you just want to plug your controller in because it constantlky running out of battery or using it on pcs that s till dont have bluetooth its really annoying. usb-c is much more sturdy. sony should have done an official upgradee controller.

    the ps4's usb is atrocious. If any one can make ps4 controllers with c type usb I will pay 100 bucks easily. The ps4's usb is the reason I've had to buy so many controllers. They're so sensitive that if you drop the controller it easily messes up and the connector will regularly disconnect.

    • @CasualCodersOfficial
      @CasualCodersOfficial  Před rokem +2

      Sure you can just throw one of those cheap UCB C breakouts in there, but I reckon that'll remove the LED unlike what we sell, and there's a good chance you won't gain the ability to use USB C to C charging. Additionally, It's just not as clean as a full replacement board such as this.

    • @sarinsarin7898
      @sarinsarin7898 Před rokem

      Worked for me and I'm not that experienced at soldering. but to go to all that trouble and to put it on CZcams as an instructable you are asking the people to pay for, then to build PCB that MIGHT work. You should put a disclaimer ATTEMP AT YOU OWN RISK so if people stuff up then it's their controller not yours.
