Ahh I had a 73 450 SE W116 Mercedes back in high school. It wasn't THAT slow, handled amazingly and was great to drive. I think it had around 360,000 miles on it when it got totalled in an accident.

It got to the point where techs from corporate had to lend a hand. When my dad finally got it back, they give him a list of all they did that was about an inch thick of paperwork. His M5 literally sits in the garage with around 25k on the dash. Diff is leaking and according to the same BMW dealer, the big bad V10 needs spark plugs. Friend also owned an E46 330, and had all sorts of random electrical issues. Dont get me wrong, i love a lot of the new audi's and bimmers. Fit and finish are second to none, designs are beautiful and they're great performers, but you couldnt pay me to own one. If they had all of this with Japanese reliability, only then.

Those are a few examples. On the other hand, there's countless german cars, for examp 1.9 tdi's and OM604/5/6 Mercedes who are extremely reliable. Also the new B58 and S58 BMW inline 6s, who are kinda the modern 2JZ engines, have enormous potential and at the same time are reliable. Every make has its flaws and your family might have been unlucky with the bmw's. Plenty of other very good german cars around tho 😁

A lot of folks forgot Brabus took an AMG V12 and dropped it into a W211 E class sedan. It’s the closest thing to a V12 powered dodge charger you’ll ever get given the Chrysler LX/LD platforms were derived from the Mercedes W211 platform.
