Under supervision by TWA, Ethiopian Airlines (EAL) began operating in 1946 initially managed and flown by Americans who moved on in charge for years. My father Alfred Temple was the first on-site-in-Addis flight instructor for the National Airlines Training Project (NATP), a Point Four project designed to train Ethiopians to fly for their national airlines. NATP covered not just pilots, but all aspects of airline operation and management. It worked very well and helped EAL become independent, successful and a deep source of pride for the nation. Al Temple trained EAL pilots for four years and ended up spending another 13 years in Ethiopia operating USAID programs (especially the Desert Locust Control Project) and training pilots for whatever was needed. Just before leaving Ethiopia in April 1974, he was honored by a special meeting with Haile Selassie. I have a wonderful photograph of the Emperor shaking Dad's hand.
