Narrow Gauge Trams Traveling Across the North Sea

- In the north part of Germany, some islands are on the Wattenmeer, which is the tidal flats in the North sea. There are narrow gauge railways to go across to islands, Oland, Langeneß , Nordstrandischmoor.
i like the sound of the wind - its atmospheric of the locaiton, rather than some crap sound track. The whole film, its really well shot. Never knew about this lovely little train, one to go and see !
My first job when I left school was driving one of these little trains in a gravel pit in Kent. 1950
I am actually jealous of that!
Britain’s new HS2 is coming along nicely 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Revolutionary Speeds and Technology!
This footage really captures the wonderful quirkiness of narrow-gauge railways. :)
This little line is really cute! Who would have thought such a thing exists?
Germany makes things happen!
@@peterebel7899 I hardly remember making the comment or seeing the video, its so long ago! Thanks for replying though!
I’m amazed this hasn’t been used in a tv program or a film,it’s amazing, definitely on my bucket list to try now.
I never knew. Thank you for sharing. Excellent video.
I love the cute small tram at the of the video. I would like to own a short narrow track circuit with a small tram like that
What a fantastic little railway!
Thank you for posting this video. That was lovely to watch.
The track is excellent. Well built and properly maintained.
A long, long time ago, 1950's to mid 1960's I helped build and run a short version of this railroad. The Carolyn Road operated west of Albany, NY during those years. That was a lot of work and consumed most of my summers.
There are a number of abandoned amusement park railroads around. Search the internet for Crown Amusements or Railroads. Probably too expensive but worth looking.
Modelling this in 009 could be fun.
beautiful!
Quite surreal and dream like. Reminded me of that scene in Tarkovsky's Stalker.
That last one makes the Parry People Mover look respectable!
I get this vision of a German remake of Blazing Saddles! But seriously, great upload!
Amazing ! Thx !
With such a crosswind, think I prefer a wide gauge.
Lindisfarne with a choo choo. Magnif !
almost the Wadden from the netherlands.super nice video.only the sound needs a foam on the mike.
Brilliant! :)
I seem to remember hearing of a narrow gauge railway being used for coastal defences construction in the 70’s somewhere north of The Wash, here in the UK.
You are maybe referring to the military railway that ran along Spurn Head. As some time they even used sails to propel wagons although that was probably just for a laugh.
@@Trevor_Austin sails were used on the one in the vid as well as far as i know
Not Spurn head, but I found it.😉

Now that's riding in style.
This little narrow gauge railway was interesting but nothing was said where it is exactly located at. I would like to know more information on it's name location and history...how long is the railway, etc? Please share this information.
It's in the video description. These railways are located on the islands Oland, Langeneß and Nordstrandischmoor in germany. It's the connection to the mainland
Your Google-fu must be weak if you couldn't find it.
@Ambrose Bierce But that's not the one which is shown here. It's about 20 kilometers southwards. And it has a different gauge (600 mm) than this one (900 mm). There is also an article in the german wikipedia: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halligbahn_Dageb%C3%BCll%E2%80%93Oland%E2%80%93Langene%C3%9F . Even if you don't understand german the pictures may speak on their own.
This is North Frisia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Frisia ), one of my favourite places for weekends and holidays. Very nice and beautiful region. it's up in the north of Germany close to the danish border. The village where this video was made is named "Dagebüll" where also ferries to the islands Föhr and Amrum are departing. This region is very different form the other parts of Germany. It's really a kind of its own.
Agreed, it's like watching someones holiday video, content with no context is pointless. And yes, of course I can google it, then what purpose does this video serve?!
Looking at this video and looking for it on Google maps made me think of the book, "Riddle of the Sands".
There's a movie with Michael York and Jenny Agutter. It's a long slow film, and you really get to appreciate the atmosphere of the flats.
I'd be waiting for the one with the cab on, looks a bit breezy there!
It is i know from experience have been very close to there
Ha! a "U-Railway!" pretty neat. I bet that saves a Euro or two! If I remember correctly those Islands mentioned used to be the home of the North Saxons. A bunch of them got sick of fishing and did a forced migration to Roman Britannia and the rest is history. (Yes this event did occur! Bede wrote about it in his history of England, and no, he wasn't lying either)
Were it not for the occasional shots of green grass I would say this felt like some 80's quirky budget scifi. Something along the lines of Kin Dza dza in terms of bizarre atmosphere with the wind and desolate looking flood plane, and weather beaten brown equipment.
Terrific. No sign of any way to change the points.
3:20 is the only clear shot we have of a set of points. And there is a lever right there beside the track.
@@paulkennedy8701 Oh yes, there is something. Thanks.

No worries.
Wow...
Can I use this video in my train compilation video credit to you in video will be given
Could you post one complete round trip with each type?
Not a bad commute.
The only time the wind isn't blowing is when it's changing direction!

Nice ride to burn a doobie on.
Loved the shed. Could do with a V8 in it.
So how many times round equals a days work?
Is it still in use in 2020, and do they all have cars, (or a vehicle of some sort) at the 'land' end.
It is still in use.
wait a sec, how was that car being powered. ????
This reminds me of Buster Keaton for one reason...

Like the Honda generator. Presume they are "petrol-electric"?
No, as far as I know just "petrol-mechanic" ! 😊
That railway needs a steam loco and a rack of carrages 🚂😃🚃🚃🚃
Where is this line exactly? I'd love to find out more and thanks for posting the video.

The one shown seems to be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%BCttmoorsiel-Nordstrandischmoor_island_railway
The article says the trams are for the residents and their guests only. However, Google maps show a Ferienwohnung on the island. A holiday cottage I guess. So it may be possible to be a "guest" and ride across.
If not, you can always take a regular train across the Hindenburgdamm to Westerland on the island of Sylt. There's an hourly service from Hamburg. And even a handful of IC services years ago. The crossing is quite odd. (It would be very similar, although without the wind in your hair.)
@@paulkennedy8701 It is not Nordstrandischmoor. It is further to the north from Dagebüll via Oland to Nordmarsch-Langeneß
@@ScarboroughTourist It is not Nordstrandischmoor. It is further to the north from Dagebüll via Oland to Nordmarsch-Langeneß.
But the narrow gauge railway to Nordstrandischmoor is similar to this one and not far away.
I’m going to have to research this, what do the trains transport, who lives on the islands? Found this BBC link czcams.com/video/9jqv-fK44Zg/video.html. Thanks for uploading. FYI o don’t mind about the wind noise, just sayin’ 😏
That's how HS2 will look after Brexit.
nobody
me in minecraft just chillin in me world
What do they do whensomeone comes from the opposite side?
They’ve got 1-2 points where the track is double
@@KelloggsDigga and else the coastal defence trains as operator of the railwas have right of way and otherwise probably the one whose side is closest to a crossing point
What happens at high tide?
wait six and a half hour!
As far as i know the dam is high enough for normal high tide (not storms)
i suppose its was too windy that day for normal work
Mainly they aren’t even used to work its more like a car for the people that live on the 'Hallig'
The coastal defence dont use nearly the whole capacity of the line and they have right of way
Who knew
I did. But I live close by.
It has somthin to do with where the choo -choo go!,,,
Windy?
Nearly always windy in that part of Germany...
пионерки по-европейски)))
What is this line for?
The people who live on the islands, mostly.
@@DoctorCuriosity not only, it is for coastal reconstruction purposes mainly (Wasser & Schiffahrtsamt/ Coastal Reconstruction Agency).
Put a handkerchief around the microphone! Very cute though... but they can still kill you! Be careful.

Ah. OK.
The locos at 2:35 probably don't need decorating. One of them might even be a dead-ringer for the one that terrorises Tom Baker in the Matrix dreamscape.
No turn signal./
Could do with a dead cat lol
Such a, REAL SHAME!!! that camera picks up such weather making it out to be a, lot WORSE!!! than what is. 👎👎👎👎😳😟 MAYBE another time it could be redone when there isn't any wind or a better camera or a microphone that has a windshield on it would help.
It is windy very often here. So the sound contributes to a good impression of this location.
Wind? There is no wind, when the sheep arent curly anymore, THAN it is windy - when the sheep have disappeared we have storm and when they come over all 5 seconds a tornado... 😉😂🤣😂
@@neoplan6116 I don't understand what your going on about😳😕 but, each to their own I suppose.
@@ThStg I am very sorry that "your own" makes it impossible for you to understand the joke - so sad but for sure, not everybody has gotten this wonderful thing called "humor"
@@neoplan6116 If that was SUPPOSED! to be a joke it seems as funny as a open grave. ( that's, my own personal opinion of it ) That's definitely not at all in the very tinniest of being funny. To be honest I thought I was, getting a reply from either someone who was trying to say something in PHYSICS or they had lost their mind. But, my sense of humour is more down to earth & can be at times rather on the blue side ( naughty) But, sadlyi simply don't understand what you are supposed to call humour & I very much doubt much that many others could make head or tail of what it's supposed to mean. But, I'm going to leave it at that. Otherwise we'll be ere forever going in bloody circles over it. 😳🤔
Irritating wind noise all through. Shame.
So it's not running across the actual North Sea is it now (?)
Jeez. I wish uploaders would get their context right, a deliberate case of *click bait.* And/or ignorance of English grammar.
