Typically gel causes the most expansion in bullets. IMO a no go in the pistol if it doesn't expand..

agree. Just wanted to try a few 45 gr bullets mainly for rifle, but figured worth seeing if would open through a pistol

    That looks viable!
You’ve tested a 40gr and now a 45gr soft point loads that while they didn’t expand, tumbled and penetrated very deeply.
I don’t know what to make of it…i think they would make great defensive rounds…but not sure what to think of the non-opening.

My thought is they perhaps were designed for something like .22 hornet and moving at rifle velocities in the high 2ks (~2700-2800 fps?), and so that could explain why they don't perform in this sub-2000 range. Although even then they'd only open at a maximum distance of maybe ~125 yards. If they'd open at 1700 fps then a hunter would be good out to ~200 yards.
Maybe they do open if using the 10% FBI organic? That would be good to know, but I'm not ready to start messing with that stuff. And of course then some would (rightly) want to see it with clothing, too.
The 40 gr Varminator did "something" in terms of deforming, so that might be worth another gel test...but aside from that, the VMAX & Sierra BK are the two winners for the cup & core traditional lead bullet.
Sadly it looks like there's no bullet to be found in a 40 gr soft-point that is designed for 5.7 pistol velocity.
As for tumbling - yes, I agree the tumbling shouldn't be entirely discounted. Some of the nastiest looking stretch cavities I've had have been from the bullets that don't open, but tumble. I guess it might explain why that long 27 grain HP was the "go-to" for the early designs?
Speer makes two HPs 30 & 33 gr TNT bullets that have been "unavailable" since I've begun this stuff for over a year now. Not sure if they scrapped them entirely, but I have a hunch those might do well in this caliber. I do keep checking.

@@ShastaBeanI have noticed that some 45 grain soft points in the hornet have smaller expansion at 200 yards and damage has dropped quite a bit from its 100 yard amount. I’ve had best luck for expansion past 200 yards with hornet use 40 grain v max, 40 grain ballistic tip, 45 grain HP/Bee bullet, and 34 grain varmint nightmare extreme bullets. Any of these bullets would perform great in 5.7 for defense purposes. Your 5.7 test with 45 grain Hornaday JHP(HP/BEE) was very impressive. As always I enjoy your tests.

I wonder if any of the all-copper options might perform for you out beyond 200 yards? Like the Shock Hammer 32g, Hammer Hunter 35g, or the Cutting Edge 40g MTH or Raptor, or Controlled Chaos 32g or 38g?...depending on whether wanting to process for consumption vs pass-through and pelt in good condition? Or NTX 35g?
Not sure what accuracy might be like in those, though, at distance & how much drop & wind shift..

@@jw-sigp2258 If it makes any difference for you...that base was a pretty deeply penetrating one, compared to some others.
Also, I said wrong weight (in case searching)...the Shock Hammer is 33 gr, not 32 like I said.
And now after re-watching the pistol gel video...doesn't look like the petals spread out very far.
Like an idiot, I didn't note in the video exactly where the petals are stopped, other than the piece of paper at the end...but it looks like it basically drops off fragments along its path - rather than that explosive fracturing that things like the Raptor 30 or Chaos 32 did. Interesting, I think.
I wonder what the low-end of velocity is for it to separate...I'm guessing pretty low with how wide it's tip is. That could make Accuracy be a challenge with it, at distance. That's where the Hunter 35 might be better. But that didn't open in clear gel with pistol. I'll be shooting that one into meat through the pistol, at some point.

@ShastaBean yes it should and on a actual target I'm sure it would not a huge fan of ballistics gel sure gives a idea on soft tissues but nothing is just soft tissue there's always muscle and most of the time bone. It's standard practice to shoot center mass and threw the shoulder on hunts but always found that odd if your hunting for survival why would u rely on a heart lung shot? Anyway off topic lol: edit point being if you were stopping a very obese home invader w the pistol w that ammo u can expect that kind of result if it's a normal looking 150 200 lb person I think the results would be different lol
