  • @thehalfbloodserb

    My main issue is that I never have enough energy or motivation to tidy. I feel tired so often (and I know it sometimes is due to iron/vitamin D though it's hard to keep track of the supplements) and when I do have energy, I have issues focusing on anything that isn't mental. So I usually don't have issues getting stuff done for uni and I can be quite perfectionist for that sort of stuff but when it comes to cleaning or tidying stuff up I feel physically exhausted. Relate to the messy room (my clothes are everywhere, I struggle doing laundry regularly) and the kitchen

    • @Ariannaveira
      @Ariannaveira Před 5 lety +4

      thehalfbloodserb I know it’s a late reply, but have you tried The FlyLady? I’m also like you, lack of energy due to my thyroid. But the FlyLady method has been wonderful to me. I only spare 15 minutes (using a timer) decluttering one room per day. When the time’s up, I stop doing everything and go back to my everyday life. Try visiting their site on how start. Hope this helps! 😊

    Hoarding is a fear of poverty. My husband comes from a family of hoarders. They all had/have at least 1 retail job so they get big discounts. The very first time I went to my husbands Aunt's house there was a path from room to room because the place was filled with stuff from floor to ceiling! Just like the nightmares that we see on TV. The back porch was full and she had 2 storage sheds built in the backyard that were filled to the brim, as well. I was in shock. It was a small 2 bed/1 bath house. She lived by herself but geesh. So much stuff! As the years have gone by my husband drags more and more stuff home and I have to drag it out to the trash. It's literally become a daily cycle at this point. I'm the complete opposite. I'm not okay unless I live in a magazine cover, Everything is white, light greys, silver, crystal and mirrors. Even my rugs are white fur, The living room furniture is white. White throws and throw pillows, lol, and everything is very minimalistic and immaculate. When you have a home like this it's even more noticeable when something is outta place. It drives me nutz!! We entertain a lot and his family is at our home a lot and they are in love with the place but won't get rid of the hoard to live a better stress free life for themselves. At least his Mom has her stuff in a spare room and it is organized. She's recently let my husband put her place together but that's the blind leading the blind, lol. At least she's coming around. :)

Now, whatever she sees is what she wants and there is no talking her out of it. Later, she became deathly ill but she is still holding onto all that stuff she accumulated over the years.

      I do too, but not behind doors! How would you open them? According to the vid, clutter everywhere means filled with self-loathing. Ha! I'm not, I am like Wilma--used to be a neat freak. Then I realized how much time was spent freaking and decided I'd rather be doing other things. So now I have clutter and I don't care. Nor do I care what other people think about it. If I can't find something, I spend a bit of time organizing that section. Nothing's perfect, but that keeps the clutter contained and I'm not cleaning house at 2 am anymore, I'm sleeping.

Lol it's neat and clean just not overboard, I have things on the kitchen table that's not ment to be there and it's OK to be there for a couple of hours where as before I'd be stressing , like you say there's more to do in life my daughter says our stable and the horses stuff are more organised than the house?? Life's too short do what you enjoy if it's a genuine you love to be ocd then that's ok! If you live in what's classed as lived in then that's fine too, as long as your house is clean messy is ok in my book .

      Well I don't have children but I do have some family heirlooms so I will try to offer some advice as best as possible. I would try to take an afternoon, put a favorite movie on / or a podcast and bring out a box of your child's artwork and go through it and make a few piles...one's you really love - that just catch your eye, love the color etc. and the other's that aren't that eye catching or emotional put them in the toss pile. That should help you be able to get rid of the okay stuff since you have a nice selection of pieces that you love. Then I would make a gallery wall of frames of some of the best pieces and put it in a space in your home that you can enjoy and maybe switch it out yearly. Then just toss the rest. As long as you have some great memories you don't need every single item. You could also scan them but I bet you'll never look at those files. Hope that helps.

    • @alleeum
      @alleeum Před 6 lety +5

      Things that have worked for me:
      * Scanning notebooks, journals, letter/cards, and other papers
      * Photographing children's art projects (actually *better* than keeping the originals, because kids' art is usually made with inexpensive materials that fade and/or disintegrate over time)
      * Photographing the stuffed animals your child is no longer interested in, so they know they'll always remember them (and suggesting they consider giving the ones in good condition to their younger cousin or their friend's baby sister, to alleviate the guilt that comes with throwing their former furry "friend" in the trash)
      * Buying a set of matching banker's box-size containers to hold memorabilia, and allowing myself *one* per period of my life -- i.e., one for childhood, one for high school, one for college, one for the years I lived in New York, etc.. (Bigso makes some really nice file-storage boxes, that somehow hold twice as much as you'd expect -- I was able to keep nearly everything. You only need six or so to contain your whole life. And if you line them up on a shelf, neatly labelled "Childhood"', "High School", etc., you look super-organized, even if what's inside is just a jumbled mess of trinkets and tickets and notes from your friend in fifth grade. :)

      My 3 children are grown and have been out of the home for a few years now. My strategy in getting rid of sentimental/childhood things is thinking that when I pass, and my kids gave to go through my stuff, what would they keep? What will they discard? Another thought I use, if I were to move cross country, what would I take with me? What will I toss? I'm definitely not 100% but I'm getting closer. 😉

Way to many clothes, so much gear. They say wanting is suffering. I love all my stuff, I am active, I love shopping, and I love the outdoors more. I love working and looking nice in front of people. I have music instrumentals, everywhere. I am happy with all my stuff, so many incredible times. I do feel overwhelmed with so much responsibility, homes, cars, stuff. I love my home, I love my collections, as far as others, I don't think their lives could match the active home owner, the doer, not the celebrity person who has to entertain people in their home. I entertain outside my home or at my rich friends home, let them have that neat and tidy home. I will bring the boat, the raft, the fun stuff.

    "A cluttered entryway shows a fear of relationships?" We love our entry to clear to walk into but to be full of shoes taken off and hooks to hang coats so everyone feels comfortable coming in. It doesn't have to feel "posh" which can make people uncomfortable. After the entryway, then the house if non-cluttered. People feel like there is a place for them with their coat and shoes along with everyone else.

      I do not agree with her method. She has very obviously borrowed from feng shui principles, but what she has done with them doesn't really look sound or effective for many people. If it works for a person, fine, but in general, I think she has just capitalized on getting on the clutter-clearing/feng shui bandwagon, but trying to make a new niche. She seems like a lovely person, but as a long time feng shui practitioner (trained in So. Calif.) much of what I've seen of what she presents doesn't have a lot of substance. I'm sure her work has helped some people and that is to be commended. It's not authentic feng shui.

    The only places I have no clutter are my cellar or attic! Because I live in a one floor apartment. I'm a new subber and really enjoyed this video. It really resonates with me - the reasons for the clutter in those areas. It has woken me up.
    Thank you.

    Hey! I have two very cluttered rooms in my house that indicate an infestation of teenagers!, lol How do I get rid of them, I mean it (the clutter)?? Also I have been using my dining room table as my sorting/organizing/storage area and it's right in the middle of my open concept house. I used to tell myself that keeping it there made me deal with it quickly, but now I'm just sick of the mess! Help me Design Diva!! Where should you store that stuff (ya know like this is for my neighbour and this has to go back to my friend and this has to be returned etc etc)

      Take one day this weekend and just do it! I've been there a few times and sometimes you just have to goodwill the heck out of it! Clear your table then go buy yourself flowers and put a big beautiful bouquet on the table and let me know how you feel! Bonus- have a decluttering party with your kids and let them have some type of reward for getting rid of a bunch of stuff. Let them choose a cause or something to give their stuff to so it's positive.

    my clutter in my house, especially my bedroom closet, says I'm way too obsessed with knitting--works-in-progress, knitting needles, bins of yarn to be knit, left over yarn to use for other projects--It's my shoe/handbag/clothes equivalent for some women. Any suggestions, other than the obvious of getting rid of some, which I'm working on, but I'm always going to need a set amount of supplies and tools?? For example I knit for charities throughout the year, but esp at Xmas, knit for gifts, for friends, and even knit for designers to test patterns. If the closet shows unwillingness to deal with emotions, where would a better place to keep hobby supplies? How do designers handle large amounts of hobby supplies?

      jayathome, no need take everything she says as true always for sure,, if that's where you keep your art supplies and like them there use it,, nice you help others with your gift of knit, my friend did test knit patterns, her knits were all over the table and she didn't have a problem with that at all.

      My Mum has the same problem. I often have to sit with her to give permission to get rid of things. If you have some one who can help you, ask. It's always easier if you can give things to goodwill rather than throwing them out. Remember when they were useful or important to you and then let that go, you're not at that point anymore

    My home is cluttered because my husband was injured and lost his job - we had to move into a much smaller affordable place with no garage. Plus I lost my built in book shelves and have stacks everywhere. I thought I was going to be able to use the basement but it flooded. I can deal with it but my hubby has ADD and says it short circuits his thinking.

      Amy, you might think about a local genealogical society, collections of photos of a whole family are useful in tracing family lines and family ties.

      I know how you feel Amy. Several years after my mother died I still had some of her stuff that I knew I would never use. I had to ask myself, "How does this serve me?" what I couldn't give to those that knew and loved her I ended up letting go. I kept a couple (2) of her personal items and a few kitchen items that I knew I would use.

    What comes first - addressing what created the clutter to eliminate the clutter- or - will clearing the clutter eliminate what caused clutter in first place ?!

    • @l.5832
      @l.5832 Před 3 lety +1

      You need to work from the inside out. Removing clutter without addressing the reason for the clutter will result in 'relapse'. Similar to dieting and over eating.

    I honestly have all of the above. I had an abusive childhood and have dealt with that for a long time. I have also been a single mom for 23+ years. It's exhausting, for real. I find that videos like this making me aware and reminding me that this is not good, motivates me to do something. I am getting something done tonight that i have been needing to do rather than just sitting in bed binging on CZcams. Because of your video. I really kind of hate technology because i could sit here for the rest of my life and never run out of entertaining things to watch. I wish it was less accessible. I have a lot of stuff because i lived the last 10 yrs in a huge 4 bd town house and now stuck in a small 2 bd apt because my landlady sold the property. i have a storage unit i am paying for as well. its 10x25, almost the biggest they have! plus i have enough stuff in my house to fill up another storage that size. not my regular belongings, those are all put away in the apt. i have a ton of boxes still taking up my living and dining area that i have nowhere to put and are taking up my life. How do i get rid of this stuff? I have tried going through stuff and some things are definitely easier to get rid of than others. i have gotten rid of the easiest stuff but still have tons i can't seem to let go of. i feel a lot better after getting rid of stuff but can't seem to let go of certain things. Tfs.

    You should ALWAYS either toss out, of give away to a new home, things your not using. It'll make you feel better if its somethng you loved and knowing that its going to a good home with friends. Maybe some baby gear, or an old crib, Things you know people who NEED it will USE it and love it. Some things just need to be tossed, old magazines, news papers. Ive helped many friends who were huge clutter bugs clean out their whole house. I bring the 32 gallon trash bags, and a vacuum if they dont have a decent one and the first rule is to "just go through the house and fill up the trash bags with all the OBVIOUS TRASH. Things you KNOW you absolutely do not need, or things that are broken. Get it OUTSIDE and then take it from there. Ive always been alot like the specialists on hoarders that help those poor souls (and WAY before that show was actually on too!) ; ) great video!
