Some had an education but most were craftsmen and traders. Girls did not need an education. .My grandparents were married at the ages of 12 & 15 and did not go past the 4th grade. He was a fur trader. She took care of 13 children. This was not uncommon. Israel was the first time they had access to a world class education. - free! And like anywhere in the world - education is the key to upward mobility. My family are doctors and lawyers with Ivy League degrees. We are also daily liberal. My family is from Iraq and we are Jewish Arabs. We speak a number of languages including Arabic. Arab Jews mirrored the culture they came from. Some had an education but most were craftsmen and traders. Girls did not need an education. .My grandparents were married at the ages of 12 & 15 and did not go past the 4th grade. He was a fur trader. She took care of 13 children. This was not uncommon. Israel was the first time they had access to a world class education. - free! And like anywhere in the world - education is the key to upward mobility. My family are doctors and lawyers with Ivy League degrees. We are also daily liberal. My cousins who did not go past high school do odd jobs and are very right wing.
