Good video, most people assume that knocking noises from front suspension is the top mounts; but with Audi cars it is more often the sway bars, (or drop links as I'd call them), that are at fault. They can look like they are still in good condition but they are soft under load, so when you have a sudden force applied such as a pothole or speed bump, then they make a knocking sound.
The reason why the the suspension dropped after you removed the end link bolts was because you only had the driver side of the car lifted. If you raise the front end evenly then the suspension would remain in place and not drop.
Hi Guys. 2014 A6 3.0T here. I was driven crazy by a repeatable clunk from up front every time bakcing out of the drive. Nobody could diagnose it. Finally I figured out it was the horizontal brace between the 2 shock towers. Bought the correct size triple square, and sure enough the bolts were loose. Fixed a problem numerous mechanics could not solve in 5 minutes. Noise was gone right away for the price of a $15 bit. Hope this helps.
Had exactly the same thing when I got the car, but thought that was related to the accident. Spent hrs and $ driving to different shops, but then finally figured it out myself by lifting the car on the jack and dropping it fairly quickly. It was PITA.

Great video. I drive an Audi A4 TDI 2012. It makes knocking noise when I turn left and right and when I brake at around 20-30 mph. I recently changed both drop links but the problem is still there. Any suggestions? Thanks
do you have a video of the sound it was making before the fix? My C7 A6 is making a metal clicking clunky noise in the front when moving slow when turning in reverse or drive. I'm wondering if it's the same problem?
By noise, are you referring to a sound like rubber on rubber when turning the steering wheel? Experiencing this on a 2010 A5. As it was in for service at Audi, they said that the “guide links” (hoping this means sway bar links) were “leaking.” Not a car guru but I do enjoy learning new fixes for it. They want $800+. If this is what the fix is, that’s funny. Please let me know if you know if guide links are sway bar links and if anything could leak from those for any reason. They also said the lower control arm bushings are starting to split, but I’ve seen some videos on that and it looks like a more extensive process. Thanks!
+Reg I think they mean something else. These cannot really leak a there is nothing to leak plus they cost about $50 each so that woukd be $700 in labor in your case.... Seems steep, even for audi dealer
+Reg I mean there is some grease inside but not much to leak. I am not a professional mechanic though. Dealer always gives misleading parts name. You should have part number on the estimate.

Philipp Schütt, that's the problem that it takes sometimes 4 hrs to find a problem that takes an hour to fix. I really was not sure that this was the cause of knocking, i was kind of guessing based on what the dealer said (they said these parts go out often on A6)..... and since the part was cheap and I could replace it myself, I gave it a try.

Great video thank you for making it, I drive an Audi A6 2.0 TDi 2011 same new shape, it makes an awful knocking noise when I brake at around 25-30 mph, I've recently had Rotors (Disks) and Pads fitted so they'er alright. Could I have the same problem as you? Thanks Les in the UK.
This must be a common thing Audi's? Because my 2012 Audi A6 Quattro 3.0T be knocking every time I drive down the driveway, and every time I go up the driveway.
@@supremeedits7999 No the left side be having a knock every time I drop down off the driveway.but just took it to the dealership for recalls and they did they multi-point inspection but of course the dealerships just checked everything in green! And say they recommend tires and breaks like always just to get that quick buck saying oh my brake pads are at a 7 millimeter they going to need to be changed bi*** please!!!!

These were aftermarket. The knocking went away.

Does the knocking sound happened when going over speed humps/potholes only or happened when driving normally on perfect roads

Did you use jack stands or just held the car up with the jack?
I used jack stand to remove stabilizer. Did not do it right though, should have lowered the car more
Was curious because be been wondering where the best place to place jack stands after lifting the car using the jack points.

Can the link go in both ways or is it a assigned?
Same part can be fitted left or right side just have to flip is iter side so the fat washer side touches the sway bar
