    He's so musical, it's incredible. Because one could easily make just random noise with all those strings at once, but to arrange a song that you don't even suspect is being played all on the same instrument, is insane. The meticulous amount of arranging and synchronizing of parts weaving in and out, is so cool to watch being performed.

    You are pretty well versed in guitar culture, but I'm disappointed that you cited Andy Mckee as the example of that style of guitar technique, which means you might not know about Michael Hedges. Michael hedges was the most inventive and genius guitarist I know of. Andy owes everything to Michael and while Andy is great, he can't hold a candle to Michael. Check him out.

      @Joshreece Před 2 lety

      @@pihermoso11in terms of age and percussive fingerstyle, Pierre Bensusan predates the both of them, but ultimately what made Michael hedges so impressive to me was the fact that very few of his songs remind me of anything else, most of them contain techniques that almost no one had ever used before and many of them were in tunings that almost no one had ever used before. I don't really think Tommy Emmanuel is comparable example either.

      @@Joshreece Tommy Emmanuel is a guitar god, he is one of the 5 certified guitar players picked by Chet Atkins himself, when he auditioned for Favored Nations, steve vai's own record label, he left steve vai speechless, so if Tommy is good enough for steve vai, then he's good enough for mere mortals.. and Tommy inspired new and upcoming players like Seiji Igusa and Kent Nishimura, while you downplay Tommy's guitar contribution to the world, i have yet to hear any of Michael Hedges work or the new players that he inspired

I am saying in terms of the road down which Andy McKee is only developing real estate, Bensusan and Kottke, and Hedges settled and terraformed it. Very few, however, have attained the incredible virtuosity and creativity that Mr. Vai has throughout his career. That's why for me personally, Vai is The GOAT. It's not one set of techniques, it's not his speed, he has all that but it's how he sees the instrument. It's such a natural extension of his mind that whatever he imagines actually comes out uninterrupted and unhindered. He's insanely creative and to do that takes a special kind of kind indeed and so many hours living through your instrument. He goes well beyond simply playing the guitar.
