This marks the first in a new series geared towards new users looking to start recording and mixing in REAPER. While the series will be more geared towards working with live instruments (guitars, bass, acoustic drums, vocals), depending on how things go, we may touch lightly on MIDI.
In this episode, we'll look at some default REAPER settings that I like change. it's important to understand some of the things under the hood so you can configure REAPER to work the way you wish to work. It's also important that you have some semblance of a plan for what you intend to do to accomplish the song goal(s) you have in mind.

Man Myk, I really love this channel. I am learning so much. This video on dialing project settings and organization is amazing. I did join the unofficial reaper discord as well. You all are amazing. Thank you for the help, and the inspiration!!
Hey, thank you! Comments such as yours are more inspirational to me than you know!
I don’t want take up to much of your time but thank you. I’m trying to get up to speed and you and all the other Reaper pros are making it happen.
Looking forward to the series Myk, always really interesting to see how others do it as there's always things to learn and see in another way. Cheers!
I’ve been watching you for a few months; often when you pop up in my feed. You make excellent videos. I have recently seen you on produce like a pro. That is awesome. Keep up the good work.
Hi Myk. Winter is almost over and it's time for me to come out of hibernation.
Good to hear from you, hope all is well on your side of the world!
Thank YOU so much for the info friend, recently got started with reaper, folks like you make a huge difference to folks like me.
I have taught computer courses and there's an art to conveying the info you want the student to know, and you didn't overwhelm, you stated the facts well.
Looking forward to the series.
Thank you!
Hi Mike, great video! Looking forward to more. I always enjoy your info
Great video!
I have Reaper configured pretty much the way I like, but there were some helpful tips here that I immediately used. Thanks!
Great job Myk. Thanks for the help.
excellent content this was just some of the great direction i needed along with your customizing the toolbars video to really make me a lot more confident reaper is the way to go. and just these simple setups make it all so much easier and organized. im not super computer savy so this helps A LOT !!
im excited for this series. i was thinking just yesterday that someone should do a tutorial step by step on the process of recording in reaper. looking forward to the next videos! :D
Great stuff! I’ve always been so eager to record that I never did any of this. Gonna pull up this video tomorrow and apply some of these techniques. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Great stuff, thanks Myk!
Very helpful, thank you Myk!
Succinct and to the point, love it man subscribed and ready to rock wit you big Mike,
Great vid and very informative!
Always a great video!
you have yet to hear me sing ;)
You are much better than the guy that makes the Reaper tutorials.
They're all good, just different "teaching" methods that appeal to some more than others. That said, thank you, and I am glad you're enjoying the content 😁
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper Yes, different. Some are good and some are terrible, like all teachers.
@@ZiggyKrueger just trying to be diplomatic 🤣
2 minutes in and im subscribed already
Thank you!
Once I switched to an interface that has direct monitoring, I changed my Repaer default to Input Monitoring Off.
Direct monitoring is great for some things, but others, not so much. Like if you're tracking through an amp sim.
Hmmm, this was really great and I got some insights into a couple of things I hadn't tried but after I did some of the changes like the save paths, I now get random "Error creating project file! Project not saved!"
That can happen if you have an error in your path for Automatic Backups. Might double check that setting. Start by eliminating the setting and seeing if the problem goes away. If so, might need to triple check the path for correctness. Also check your default location for projects and make sure it exists on the machine and is not a cloud only location. Weird things can happen if the path is in either iCloud or OneDrive, as both of those like to make things disappear when not in use for a while in order to save space on the computer unless certain other options in those applications are checked to keep the files local.
Please show us How to use Reatrack
Very enlightening. I have never thought about half of these items.
I have just discovered that all those blank browser settings your refer to are set to my named folder on my desktop but I have no idea where all the Reaper settings are stored by default. Inside the folder there is an AppData folder and inside that is Roaming and inside that Reaper - where should I browse to in there to create a path?
Forgive me, but I'm not quite sure I understand which paths you're trying to create? Pretty much all path options can be set inside the GUI. There is a reaper.ini file in AppData that you can edit, but you can also make some easy mistakes in there if you're not careful.
Maybe it's just early on my side of the world, but would you mind re-wording the question?
I'll reread this after breakfast and some coffee and see if my comprehension kicks in 😂
Sorry for the confusion and thanks for your reply. As you say in the Path Settings part, all the settings are blank and you have customised one or two of them. When I clicked on the paths it showed the "named" (my name) folder on the desktop, so I clicked on there where I went to Appdata - Roaming - Reaper. In Reaper I have six folders and lots of files with figuration settings. So I was wondering where those "paths" lead to by default.
I suppose it's early morning over there in the States. Here it is half three in the afternoon.
Interested , so i subscribe and bell activated , let's talk about EZdrummer2, Neural Dsp Plugins Nolly and more and more
Thank you! It's so usefull. Cheers from Russia. Yeah, no war, no Putin!
