    Hello Pye, great video, thank you for it! I also have a question about the focus. I understand the answer you've given before, but I'm experiencing another kind of problem. When I'm shooting a couple below f2.8, if one of the faces is only 1 cm behind/in front of the other, the one I focus on is in focus and the other isn't. What am I doing wrong? Should I ask my subjects to keep their faces in the same line? Is there any other method? I forgot to say I'm shooting a Canon 600D with a 50mm 1.8. Thank you very much! Best regards!

      You're referring to the focal plane - the area in which the image is in focus. That focal plane, is also dependent on your focal length, focusing distance, and not just your aperture.
      The best way to see how this works for you, is to take a photo at the typical working distance you would choose for the framing of the shot. Then, take a few steps back, focus on the same point, and take that same exact shot while changing nothing but where you were standing.
      What you'll notice is that at f/2.8 at your typical working distance you may find that the person slightly further from you may be a little softer, but when you stand back and work from a further distance that person's face is now sharper. That is because the focal plane has actually gotten deeper even while your aperture has remained the same. Once you get a better feel for this, you'll know how you'll need to position your models while achieving the aesthetic you're going for. The closer you are, the shallower you depth of field becomes which means you have to tighten down the aperture some to get a deeper focal plane when working closer.
      I highly suggest just going out and practicing some of the techniques I just mentioned. You'll begin to get the hang of it and start to really learn how your images are going to look before you take them.

    • @slrlounge
      @slrlounge  Před 8 lety +2

      +Arlie Fundal If you're looking for more noticeable Bokeh, you'll want to choose the 50mm over the 35mm. Generally, the higher the focal length the more bokeh will be visible.

    I have no idea how u got both subject in focus with f/2. I took my cats photo at f/2.8. Her nose was in focus but blurred rest of the face. Whenever i take group candid picture i generally dial it to f/6 or something close. Any idea what i must be doing wrong while taking pictures at f/2.8 ?

      You focused on your cats nose. Thats' all. You should always be focusing on your subjects eye. Try using spot focus and taking more care to focus on the eye.

    How would you control the aperture in manual mode on a Nikon D3300? I can control the ISO and shutter speed, but can't see how to control the aperture.

    • @RumbleRish
      @RumbleRish Před 8 lety +1

      you press down the fn button WHILE scrolling the wheel thing that you use for shutterspeed.

    • @slrlounge
      @slrlounge  Před 6 lety +2

      No. ISO auto will result in very inconsistent results. Set you ISO based on each scene.

    If you instruct one of the subjects, then surely it's the opposite of candid?

    • @slrlounge
      @slrlounge  Před 9 lety +14

      simianinc capturing photojournalistic moments on "cue" is kind of the name of the game. People expect you to be able to direct and guide them to create natural/candid representations of real moments. Sure, technically it's posed, but all that matters is how the image feels, not what happened behind the scenes in directing it. But, to each their own philosophy. I think a photographer that strictly shoots 100% photojournalism is going to leave clients unhappy quite often as the vast majority clients don't know how to act/pose in front of a camera.

    • @simianinc
      @simianinc Před 9 lety +2

      SLR Lounge | Photography Tutorials Thanks. Nowhere in the title or description did this say that the photography was for clients. When I saw the title I was expecting something a la Cartier-Bresson or even Vivian Meier. If your aims are different, that's fine, but I do think that in the context most photographers use the term, "candid" has a different meaning, i.e. "A candid photograph is a photograph captured through motion mostly, without creating a posed appearance. This is achieved by avoiding prior preparation of the subject and by either surprising the subject or by not distracting the subject during the process of taking photos." This isn't meant to be a criticism. I like your work.
