Yeas all the members are Japanese with Nina(the girl who was with jyp) being a mixed Japanese-american
There is an entire back story about the formation of this group.
2 full seasons starting a year back from the audition call all over Japan.
There is a huge difference about this group from the rest of the K pop girl groups. For one, they are pure Japanese, and they were formed from an audition call, trained on the spot by JYP, selected, then spent 6 months in Korea training at JYP HQ and undergo further elimination, and eventually the final 9 members. It was a non-stop one year story.
Look for "Nizi Project" part 1 and part 2 for the full story. It is the powerful back story that set this group apart, and so many people already started stanning them even before any single was released.
I loved this mv. You'll note that Miihi 10:58 doesn't sing or dance in this mv. She's resting because she's currently dealing with health issues. The whole mv is Niziu encouraging her, giving her their support, and telling her to take her time to get better.

Actually when they did the live performances it was reveled that Miihi is actually singing in a number of places. Just not dancing.
She sings lines tho, she's still 3rd of 4th in line distribution

The girl who has red hair in make you happy and black short one in step and a step actually is a daughter of a well known japanese rapper, so her background is also hiphop-ish.
Make You Happy was made for the final song of Nizi Project (the series that formed them), so of course when they became a full group, they did a full 9 member version of it
With Step and a Step, the song's lyrics and MV is about their pre debut, Rima's father is a rapper and mother is a model, but she didn't want to get famous from her family, so her part of putting in the pieces herself reflects that
Mayuka didn't stand out in the Nizi Project series until she started showing her rap skills, so in her parts she is lost in a forest of mirrors, starts rapping and her door appears
There is more symbolism for the others but that is why the rap part exists how it does, but yeah, it does come out of nowhere

Not sure if you caught it but in the first part of their rap for Make You Happy they mentioned hit songs from all 4 of the previous JYP girl groups.
I don’t stan any of those groups so I didn’t really catch it
I watched the survival show and really like the group, so I am really happy to see your reaction. Make You Happy isn't my favorite as well, but Step and a Step made me cry and I love it a lot. The rap grew on me with a few listens :)
The lyrics only expand on what the song already conveys pretty well at first glance "Take one step at a time, go at your own pace and everything will be fine you won't be left behind" the song and MV seem to be directed at Mihi, the member that smiles at the end and joins the others. Her health started deteriorating during the show and while she is included in the pre-release she won't be in the debut promotions and isn't singing on the song but is, of course, included in the video.
And because life feels like molasses for me as well right now I probably relate to a soft encouraging bop way too much haha
I like the members individually a lot and I am excited to watch them grow as a group!

I mean Jpop uses raw vocals, meaning that their vocals aren’t as ‘auto tuned’ as some Kpop vocals are... and like I love their rawness of vocal, but people still bash them for it 😞

I think the meaning of “ step and a step” is basicly what happend to the girl named miihi, the girl with the pink teddy bear laying on a plate form on the water got very ill so she took a break from singing and everything else, so the doors mean welcoming miihi back to the group ( this is just my pro-diction)
all the members are japanese, and so far only have a japanese discography
bUT they live and are based in korea so im assuming jyp will cross them into the korean market eventually
for now all the members are learning korean, and three of them are basically fluent bc they were jyp trainees before joining the group
