  • Symbolism was an innovative literary and artistic movement which originated in late nineteenth-century France and quickly spread to the rest of Europe. Symbolist artists looked to the world of dreams and the imagination for inspiration, rather than trying to create direct representations of nature.
    Where did the term come from, and what effect did Symbolism have on future generations of artists?

    Lower your background sound, it drowns out your voice. Otherwise, wonderful explanation 🙏🏼

    Which is true, also, regarding a number of other areas missing: the importance of Symbolism in Russian literature, in Vienna, its focus on Belgium, its applications in sculpture by Rodin and others, also its interaction with the performative arts and reach into Australia. And yet this level of detail is far greater than such an introductory series of videos cannot achieve. Maybe, there's so much to Symbolism that we cannot fully understand its overview in the limitations of this series of brief, introductory videos.

    You forgot the fact that Symbolism escaped the art world to find a near permanent home in horror literature and films.

    Read Matthieu Pageau’s book The Language Of Creation if you want to know about Orthodox symbolism. It is not wishy washy like this video suggests. It is vast and awesome in its scope.

    '..began in literature, but quickly spread to music and fine arts.'
    So we're skipping the whole, 'Symbolism Poets' part? There's a ton of literature that these arts were to become by. The inspiration.

    If symbolism is actually a rejection of scientific and industrial advances and you didn't made that up, that it's a big time failure as it ought to be, but I guess you made that line up.

    • @vigeewang9630
      @vigeewang9630 Před 4 lety

      I think Symbolism is not a rejection of industrial advances, it's a respond of the changes of the society. People have nature, culture,religion...in old day, and now they just have more things to care about, but rejection may take a big part of it. Just an opinion of an art noob watching this video to first know Symbolism.

    • @trubells8573
      @trubells8573 Před 3 lety +2

      I don't think it is necessarily a rejection, but more of a response to the unbalance that was present in society as @Vigee Wang proposed. Realism and naturalism brought upon the encouragement for scientific advancement as well as the search for truth, which is seen in literature and it also exposed the gruesome and appalling behaviors of society. For example, a work of literature known as "Marianela" clearly shows characteristics such as the ones I mentioned before and it is a realist novel. But perhaps by sensing this lack of deeper meaning and wanting to search for hope in the beyond, symbolists surged to encourage imagination and vision within people. Neither movements are bad, they are just responses that occur due to the unbalance of ideals and such patterns are prevalent throughout history. Naturalism is one of my favorite movements, but still it is important to recognize the reason behind the surge of each and other movements and their contributions to society. Take what I say with a grain of salt as this is my opinion, but I just wanted to contribute to the conversation. Have a good day!
