Summary // On day 7 of our trans-siberian railyway journey from Irkutsk to Vladivostok, we explored the town of Ulad-Ude. After a disappointing lunch, we went to a monastery up on a hill overlooking the city. It was a super authentic experience and we reflected on what we’ve learned from traveling the last 2 years.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started traveling full-time January 10, 2016. While daily vlogging was not the original plan, we were having way too many cool experiences not to share every single day! Now travel vlogging is our full-time gig and we feel like we have the greatest job in the world! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
We’ve pulled inspiration from several of our favorite travel vloggers on CZcams, such as: +CaseyNeistat +FunForLouis +Jon Olsson +Mr Ben Brown, and any other talented travel vloggers that CZcams’s algorithm will hopefully connect us with ;)
Planning our Trans-Siberian Railway adventure wasn't easy! We had a ton of questions, and the internet had very few answers! So to help out our fellow travelers who might be interested in booking a trip of their own, we've put together the Ultimate Guide to Riding the Trans-Siberian. This guide will walk you through all of the steps from securing your visa to planning your route and booking your tickets. Google maps are not the best in Russia. You better use Yandex maps or Maps.me phone app.
Hi, Kate an Nate! "No Abibas" sign means no tracking-running clothing. "No shopping bags sign" looks weird though. And all of these "rules" could actually be illegal.
I am not sure if you were scammed, but miscommunication of rules and prices FEELS the same as if you were. Whenever restaurants in any country want good publicity, than prices and weight-portion size info laid out should be VERY clear. And there is a problem of a "menu for a foreigner" in some countries. Even if You feel scammed than the service was bad. We are sorry, some of us here...
@@nickymoloney4218 not every little location has to be prepped for foreigners. It is a very entitled way to see it...
Being respectful is ten times more important than being deep. Love you guys and your journey. And I really appreciate what Nate said!
I just found this channel yesterday from the side bar (TRANS SIBERIAN Day 1). Now I'm binging, because these are countries I've never, ever seen before, even in video!
FireCracker3240 holy moly me too lol this is so addicting im a bit late but ok
I see your comments on all the new videos!!! Awwww this is where it all began for you.

@@leilaj8895 Hi, LJ! How are you doing? 😊😊
Update ??
Hi guys! This is the second time I hear from travelers that Ulan-Ude is their favorite place on this route, and I'm very pleased! (note: I'm from Russia, Ulan-Ude is my hometown : ))
We did the TransSib journey and Ulan Ude is definitely a worthy stop. We enjoyed our time there. These people made only two stops. We did about 8 stops including Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Khabarovsk and Vladivostok.
It is a complete waste of time if you travel this route and not stop at the important places which have plenty to offer.
Ulan Ude is not our most favorite stop but we would recommend anyone to stop there for at least 3 days.
What is the noise in the background?
Today I learned the respectful way to walk around a Buddhist statue or temple -- clockwise, keeping the statue or temple on your right. Thank you!
Guys, don't feel bad about the extra charge. With meat dishes a lot of the times the price is listed for a unit of 100g to make math easier. Sometimes you may order more than you thought or sometimes it states below that the minimum order is 200 grams or something like that. It usually will show up as an extra item so I can see it being confusing. I am pretty sure it was the ribs. Hope it hasn't soured your experience too much.
That should have been explained, but it is good that it wasn't theft because that sucks. I would have been so mad.
The official answer. They ordered ribs on the grill. The ribs on the grill are sold portion by piece for 100 grams. The order was 200 grams, so it turned out 4 positions instead of 3. Sagudai, ribs (100 + 100 = 200 grams) grill and teaThe result is 4.
Okay i believe you
9 (больше 500 рублей) dollars for 100 grams of pork ribs, seriously guys?
The food looked rather disgusting!
That’s interesting, that you never show your left shoulder when walking around a Buddhist temple. Learning little things like that really is a cool part of traveling. Xoxo. Caylie
I discovered - on my trip to Western Wall (Wailing Wall) that (-out of respect), people do not show their back and/or covered heads.
Thank you for always learning while showing respect to different people, beliefs, and customs.
Lol I love the positivity of Kara & got tickled at Nate being peeved but truthful! Ya'll are the best!😁
Thanks for the awesome videos Kara and Nate. I’m binge watching during COVID-19 lockdown. It’s like a virtual travel for me. Thank you. Keep travelling...!
Love your reflection on "the little things" that you've learned.
Those views were so beautiful! Can't wait to see your next train adventure!!
OMG the pigeon thing makes me laugh so much. The bloopers part at the end is something I always look forward to!!
*Wow!Are you traveling from Moscow to Vladivostok? Most of the foreigners going "Transsiberian" but they turn to Mongolia and China after Ulan-Ude(so they are mostly going Transmongolian route).*
*Transsiberian railway is going from Moscow and ends in Vladivostok without any crossing of the Russian border and you guys are going right way!*
*After Vladivostok you can cross the border with China by bus,go to Hunchun and get on the high speed rain to Beijing.*
Found your channel yesterday. Watched several of your Russia travel videos. Very well done and very interesting. You guys definitely deserve more subscribers.
I just binge watched this series, how enjoyable it has been. Have fun guys!
Hey guys! I love your channel. I was just googling about trans-siberian railway and your video showed up.. been binge watching since then. Love you both. you give really relevant and useful info :)
First of all you guys are great. I`m watching you from Zimbabwe . I think you should create one of these videos in Saint Petersburg Russia
Just discovered your travel videos. They're wonderful and you guys seem so down to earth and such kind souls
The quiet Temples are always the best so relaxing so true to the beliefs and any people there are also a lot more helpful explaining things love the view from up there stay safe
I found this channel recently and have fallen in love with your travels. I've been binging it. It is really inspiring me to travel and do more!
LOVED the editing in this video! 😍
You guys get the best out of every place! 💥💥💥
I really love the Transiberian video's! Keep 'em coming! 😱
+Marjan van Appeldoorn great to hear! Thanks!
I have definite inclination for deep people, who think deeply about every perspective of life, people, situations, things.. they analyse everything differently, from heart may be.. that's y I naturally love you both
I just started watching your vlogs you guys are awesome and like the train ride very cool. Can`t wait for more. Keep up the great vlogging.
Gosh, I just love these travel videos. I love seeing people from all parts of the world traveling to all parts of the world, and people from all parts of the world being able to see it and communicate in the comments. I've never felt so connected to the entire human family as I do now, in the age of youtube.
Very enjoyable video, im learning so much from you two.Thank You😀🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Gorgeous filming and editing at the monastery.
I absolutely LOVE you two!
It took me all of 1.3 seconds to recognise exactly where you were in the city. I really miss Ulan-Ude.
the way your Girl look at you, mate ! Thats Love ! Love your videos, all the way from Asia, Bangladesh. Keep travelling.
Good to see your travels..

Oh my gosh red squirrels :-D so cute!
Good to know the buuz is so good!
The point when Nate says "$9.00"... So southern.... love it... I'm in South Carolina
Good travel And good luck!
2:55 As I can understand - you pay more then it was in price list. That happened because (possibly) cost was for 100 gramm or 1 kilogramm of food, but your portion was bigger then this - they just calculated it proportionally. Very often this system used in food like ribs or something like this that can't be divided by gramms. It's not so right from service quality side, but right from taxes paying after. It's more or less OK.
They should have explained it just looked bad.
you guys are great
3.09 reminds me of Elvis .. "makes me so mad" .. idky but I replayed that so many times lol I like how it sounded 😂
Im Scandinavian but recognize the ribs dish as its a national dish here as well. It was a large plate and I suspect you had the double amount of what you think you ordered so in fact you ordered 2 portions and paid for that. That amount of ribs usually serve around 4 people where Im from.
prayer wheels are turned clockwise...kinda makes sense..looking forward to more from you ..thanx
Super neat building behind y'all at 0:50
Very interesting and informative as always. Thank you very much. I travel the world together with you sitting at the computer at home :)))
Love the ups and downs from your vids. No matter how well you plan, there is no such thing as a perfect trip. Great that you show the positives and negatives and still come out with smiles.
i love that montage
Another awesome vlog! I wish they were longer lol! Can’t wait for the next leg of your journey! Let’s hope you have your hot water tap or else those noodles won’t be too good haha!! Loved learning something new about the temple and when you walk around it, the views were stunning! Squirrel was a cute one too! You guys are such a sweet couple and so funny! Ps. You have another little squiggle on the camera on the left bottom corner which you have probably seen lol xx
+Youpenga thanks girl! Sad we missed you in South Hampton! Unfortunately we didn't notice that little fuzzy while filming and now it's driving me nuts 😂😂
you guys should have millions of subscribers
+KaW Warrior 😁
So true! 👍
Agreed!
They have surpassed that now
I know! I’ve been watching them since they were in the thousands of subscribers
She was saying (confirming) that you’d be staying for 2 nights (sleeps)
Just found you guys and love your vlog. I'll
The b-roll starting At 5:55 was pretty epic. Great song, great shots. Would’ve loved to see some color grading!
I just wanted to mention something weird. I didn't get a notification for this video like I normally do. I even checked your channel and the video didn't show up. But I got an ET that said you uploaded a new video so I checked on the link and I worked. But it's still not showing up o. CZcams the regular way. Strange.
I dig you videos😊😊😊
Couldn’t agree with you more about feeling horrible about being taken advantage of. As a fellow traveler, that’s more disappointing than anything.
$9 is significant.
Jennifer Lundgren restaurant owner answerred below :) prices on the menu are for 100 grams. So if they order 200 - it costs more. It is true actually.
Walker Smith that’s just what they want you to think. It’s BS.
9$ for 100 gramm of ribs in Russia??? No way...
In fact they were not taken advantage of. They just did not have a clue... Sometimes it is better to stay humble and give them the benefit of the doubt than crying for no reason. Very inpolite being in the wrong and start a discussion, when dining out.
Come on guys! You’re so gorgeous that I can’t stop watching your vlog! Though it’s 4 hours before my wake up time.
I'm with you Kara lol 😆 birds freak my out definitely wouldn't want one landing on me 😅 even for ice cream
Another great video, guys. In Buddhism, serving others, without any expectation, was the hallmark of the purest form of compassion. You would have seen Kara's favourite pigeons being fed by Buddhists. Kara would make a lousy Buddhist! :-)
My wife also hates pigeons. Once we were hiking at lake louise canada a pigeon pooped on my wife. She was so upset she ran all the way back to the hotel for a shower. Of course my son and I laughed and never let her forget about the pigeon. I enjoy your channel because the two of you are so genuine. Your LOVE for one another comes across on your videos. So many other CZcams channels are stunts and negative. You alway try to find the positive in your travel, and are respectful of other people and places.
I would have done the same thing!!! Haha and thank you💞💞
The Russian Squirrels conversation in the outakes cracked me up. My boyfriend was born in Ukraine and one of his first gifts to me was a box of hazlenut chocolates called "bilochka" I believe (my cyrillic keyboard is not working) and it had a squirrel on the box top and he made up this whole crazy story about how Ukranian squirrels are made of chocolate 🤣.
2:50 What a funny place - there is a label "УНТЫ" (fur boots) on every door you passing by)))
It's a Central market area
I'm from Moscow, the video was written 22 hours ago on October 19. in Moscow now 08:00 on October 21
Hi from Ulan- Ude)
spazzing pigeons...oh Kara hahahaha you are too much
5:15 The Buddha wanted you to see this one :D
One of your lenses has a huge hair or crack on the bottom left
Why did you tell me that?
I thought that was my phone crack😂😂
5:46 exquisite shot
Shout out to the main Buddhist dude 😂🙌🏼
Was that a “No Gopniks” sign?!?! 😂😂
Beautiful monestary
Om mane padme Hun
Greetings from india
Wow ! One thing I learned Never eat fish that I smells or taste fishy ! And sorry that waiter ripped you off ! I am curious of what type of meat ribs you guys ate! !
Kara and Nate
No adidas hahahaha!!Cheeki breeki!!
No Abibas, an offbrand. I think they're hard core discriminating against our squatting comrades. No problem, we will prevail.
Ahhhahaha Cheeki Breeki comrade!
This means dress code. You can not go to a restaurant in sportswear. We have a very popular adidas brand in Russia, that's why the badge is)
That was literally the most expensive grocery in town.
One of the things I like about traveling is learning about new cultures, and it's good to hear you are respectful of customs etc. I do dislike occasionally getting mysterious charges when people in other countries hear you speaking English. Several times I've been charged more for taxi rides (10 euros more in the worst case). It was a bit strange to hear what sounded like gunfire in the background.
It seems they ordered more than the minimum weight. They sell meat by weight. They should have explained it better but I guess the language barrier is an issue
"The Buddhist dude". Is that like "the big kahuna? LOL According to a PBS special I watched years ago, and subsequently got a DVD of, Buddhism takes over just before Lake Baikal and Ulan Ude (oo-LON oo-DAY), and continues east. The city is the capital of the Buryat (BURR-yot) Republic and its people.
Kara, always beware of the biting pigeons. They're vicious! : )))
hey when are you guyz planning to travel to india ??
I’m sympathetic! I hate pigeons after Venice... My sister thought it was funny to walk in front of me in those tight alleys and scare the pigeons so they flew up in my face! I’m now terrified of pigeons...
I didn't know Kara was afraid of pigeons!
without a permanent address how do you arrange for all your visas?
Those flags totally sounded like small arms fire in the background.
Damn it, I live here
The whole Trans Siberian series is amazing can’t wait see the next video. Can you please share the link for booking first class tickets on trans siberian
I wish they made more stops. Like Yekaterinburg and Krasnoyarsk plus Nizhny Novgorod at least.
All Russian trains belong to the Russian railway company, you can buy a ticket on the website pass.rzd.ru/main-pass/public/en? There may also be some Chinese trains in another place
Good video. Sometimes the places you go by mistake are the best! While Russia as far as Baikal is predominantly European in culture, there is no mistaking the fact that you're in Asia now!
+nigel Mc Hugh exactly!!
All of Russia is Asia. I think that people believe that Asian people all have pulled eyes... Yet there are brown and black people with round eyes that are Asians and of course there are white Asians who tend to live in Western Russia...
I am enjoying your videos of this trip it is one I am planning but if you could add more of your cost such visa cost and acquainting them and such that would be very helpful.
Every video of this trip mentions our full-guide to the trans-siberian at the end and it is also linked in all of the descriptions
I have checked it out and it was very informing.
I really liked your "reflection" about respect for other cultures and religions. Thanks!!!
I wrote to the restaurant owner about the situation with the check.
Please, tell me, why Eastern sandals???It looks funny with the hat and a jacket put on
I wouldn't assume you were taken advantage of just because there was an extra charge...it could be a seating charge, a service or gratuity, or anything! A language barrier will make you automatically think that you've been ripped off, but I don't think that's fair to the locals. Give them the benefit of the doubt..not many people will rip you off like that.
I don't think so. I'm Russian and we don't have any automatic extra-charges. So the waiter probably just saw that they couldn't speak Russian and thought they were rich and it was ok to trick them like that. That's disgusting, but unfortunately there are people like that.
Lauren B sadly its naive to think that people wont take advantage of you. People will do so if it benefits them, not always but in the real world you can’t give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
Lauren B I am Russian. It's a service charge. Some restaurants in small town have it. But I don't like it too.
The "No Adidas" sign at the front I guess is sport tracksuits are forbidden. We slavs have a certain bad habit to wear those godforsaken tracksuits.
