Inspired by his love of mid-century design, architect and furniture dealer Jacobo Valentí of Casavells estudio completely transformed this 34sqm attic apartment using a combination of original mid-century furniture he had been collecting for years and cleverly adapted Ikea pieces. Valentí redesigned the kitchen in two separate opposing sections, creating a central corridor in the middle of the apartment. He also split the bathroom in two, keeping the toilet near the entrance and adding an open shower next to the new terrace, converted from 3sqm of existing indoor space. The versatile, open plan living area is used for sleeping, dining and working and contains a dual purpose ikea sleeper sofa with a custom wood frame. This acts as a dining table/desk seat and guest bed when needed. For storage, a customized original Danish unit that sits opposite the bed is paired with a mirror-clad Ikea closet. A projector, mounted above the bed, projects directly onto the far wall. Meticulously selecting and customising his furniture allowed Valentí to balance the old with the new and give his home a unique second life.

This space kind of reminds me of a captain's quarters on a ship! Always interesting to see how architects design for themselves.
That is definitely part of his inspiration ! 🥰
I agree, it really has a vintage boat feeling. Brass and dark stained wood. All it needs is a copper green or ocean blue accent!
Indeed! 🚢
True! Made me think of the top-of-the-line Airstream trailers! 😎✌🏼
My same thought.
I love how this spaces feels lived in and homely like a broken in shoe. I can see why you'd never want to leave this apartment.
No?! Lived in spaces are 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Wonderful place , I would maybe get another shoe 👞 in the nature/ mountains to have both ⛰️
Exactly! This is perfection!
I love how he didn’t hold back in using Ikea furniture and upgrading them to fit his style! I thought that most architects/designers shy away from using Ikea so this is a pleasant surprise! Such a great layout and am in love with the warm colors ugh ❤
I don't have the budget that most of the people on this channel have, but I watch for ideas that I can adapt to my space and budget. So I appreciate seeing someone use Ikea furniture and give it an upgrade. I can do that!! 😊
@@Terri_MacKay right?? I’ve always thought that it was taboo for them to use ikea products but voilà! Here’s a great example that you could actually elevate a space by using them!
You can definitely use ikea. There are companies that do custom doors to match whatever you’re trying to create.
@@richiesd1 I have an acquintance who's a carpenter, but I can't afford to have him build me a particular piece of furniture that I want from scratch. I've never thought to ask him if he would be willing to modify some Ikea pieces for a lower price. Thanks for giving me the idea!! 😊
Because Ikea products are cheep done ups and you just apply an awesome face-lift. Clever. This is what a smart architect does: "think and apply out side of the box philosophy".
Possibly my new favorite. Seeing a solo man living on his own in a small and carefully designed space gives me a sense of peace, liberty and cleanliness. Despite society pushing us in the exact opposite direction.
Exactly!
I got the exact same vibe!
D'accordissimo!
Don't forget his friend who also lives there.
how tastefully he upgraded the ikea kitchen cabinet and the wardrobe is amazing! Looks so classy, and he integrated it so well into the apartment.
This is SPAM! BEWARE!
I love this entry. Though it doesn't look as light and airy as many others on this channel, it looks cozy and has so much personality. Not just an architectural space, it's a home.
Right after you watched this video you want to watch it again. So warm, beautiful and comfortable space!
This man really understands what you do and don't need in a studio apartment when living alone. My favourite so far!!
i absolutely adore how warm the colours are, i've never seen much appeal in the super bright/pale or "let's just make everything white to look ~minimalist~" approach to interior design, something like this is much more appealing to me, and shows that you can include more depth of colours without it looking dark/dreary. there's something about the kitchen corridor that reminds me of a houseboat, like a really luxurious dutch barge maybe. the little methods of separating the space into more distinct areas work really well here, i love it.
You can have dark colors without losing light, but that's not the case here. Notice that all the light in the apartment was turned on during the whole video, because otherwise it would have been too dark. The wood reflects very little light, so it's a matter of balance. I think the apartment looks great, but he should have made the floor completely white and alternatively put up reflecting materials on the walls facing towards the window. Wood also looks the best when natural light shines on it and you can see the contrasting wood grains.
One of my top 5 design in Never too small. The color palette is so beautiful and warm. Every space is very well-designed, I especially loved the kitchen cabinet, bathroom tiles, and terrace. The view is stunning too.
Which are the other 4? 😄
This one is my favorite! To have an outdoor shower in such a small space is a gift. So nice, warm, and cozy.
I am all about that wooden mid-century aesthetic. Love the decision to maximise space by splitting the bathroom, the open shower with yellow tiles 🤌, and the fact that the extended terrace is the jewel of the apartment for him. I can totally see that. It's his living room. Love it! Probably one of my favourites on the channel. I never comment, but felt like it deserved more than a mere "like".
It shows character and personality to the appartment. The use of darker wood makes it warm and cozy.
Incredibly, he decreased the indoor space, yet it feels so much bigger. I love how he split the bathroom to create the indoor/outdoor feel, and I love the combination of cozy, vintage-feeling materials he used. One of the very best on this channel!
I love those yellow tiles in the ‘bathroom’ - beautiful mustard-gold.
Never before a small apartment sacrificed space to make the terrace bigger. Converting it to an outdoor “room”. Simply brilliant!

above 👆👆👆I have something for you..
i love how he brought the green, yellow, and red from the vintage cabinet into the rest of the design.
Wow, this apartment is just amazing. The mirrors are situated perfectly. And he is right the outside area is the Jewel of the apartment
His redesign of the floor plan is remarkable!! My brain would never have come up with that.
Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam.... amazing places, amazing people, amazing talents!
What a gorgeous, warm and welcoming home.
I love the warm tones across the apartment! The lighting in the kitchen and closet are my favorites. The lights work great with the matte golden backsplash in the kitchen.
I also appreciate the owner's creativity with things like the toilet curtain and customizations to Ikea furniture. And the terrace is beautiful!
The one thing I'd want to change is the empty white wall. A projector screen could give it a brighter, clearer image while also letting you put artwork on the wall. And I'd love for the projector to be enclosed in a wooden enclosure to match the rest of the apartment - but as a DIY enthusiast I know that's harder than it looks!
There is something very cozy and beautiful about this place..
i love that theres no shame or stigma for ikea, while still reusing old vintage stuff. there's a nice balance of sustainability and affordability.
Architectural and interior masterpiece. Absolutely breathtaking!
I love it, but find it funny to have 3 separate sinks in such a small space. Very cool space.
That's what I was thinking! He could free up a lot of space by not having that gorgeous yellow sink next to his bed. I mean,it would be a shame because it's so beautiful, but it doesn't seem necessary to me.
Love how he upscaled IKEA furniture. Makes this seem so attainable with the right inspiration
At first I wasn't too sure about the shower next to the bed, but it's really grown on me. I love that it has an indoor/outdoor feel to it. The tile is also amazing. Well done!
This apartment is beutiful especially the color palette chosen for it ❤️ the layout makes the room feel much bigger and the kitchen is beutiful! I love that he could fit everything in the without making convertible compromises like Murphy bed etc. Beutiful home ❤️
The terrace really makes that space work.
This is by far one of the most livable designs I've seen on this channel. The warmth of wood and the art in the toilet are outstanding. Big kudos to this architect!
What a beautiful environment Jacobo has made for himself and his dog. I enjoyed listening to his soft tone with such a good accent . His apartment is simply wonderful. I congratulate him on his design.
I love this home: beautiful, well-designed, comfortable, and sleek. 💚
What a wonderful sense of style and colour... one of the best
Now we're talking! We're back on track :) I appreciate Jacobo's eclectic taste in Mid-Century Modern Furniture. Whether made of solid wood, veneer or plywood, the darker hues and earth-tones enrich the space; bringing a sense of elegance into his home. All of the other materials, such as the sun-soaked bathroom tiles and the stainless steel kitchen counter, compliment each other very well.
My only changes (if this were my apartment :) would be to the bed and to the shower. In such a small space, that bed takes up SO much valuable real estate. I may have incorporated a Murphy Bed system that has additional storage into the mix. And for the shower, even though he has a beautiful terrace entrance that could be opened, I'd be concerned that any moisture or humidity generated from showering would damage cabinetry and other valuable objects. So having a way to properly ventilate or section off that space may serve the apartment well over the longterm.
I concur completely. As a dancer, I would have a Murphy bed too. And I was also worried about the moisture, but perhaps there was some good ventilation system that was not shown.
My thoughts are the same. I would install a Murphy bed.
And maybe a bifold or sliding door to close off the shower area?
I'm sure the sliding glass door right next to the bed and the large vent above the kitchen/living separation are enough cross ventilation. Also if he's diligent about wiping down that shower after he uses it. And for me, Murphy beds are inconvenient and uncomfortable. I'll give up space for a real bed.
The fact that the dog’s name is Ron is adorable
that shade of burnt yellow for the tiles (and matching pillows) is A+
The choice of wood and colors make the space feel warm, cozy and artful. The kitchen and dining area reminds me of a deluxe train car. ❤
It is obvious from the apartment that Valentí is a man of sophisticated tastes, but that Massive Attack vinyl at 4:53 actually proves the point.
^the comment i was looking for!!
Incredibly inspiring place. Love the colors and textures the owner used in the project. In spite the small square it feels like you have all the space and air. The shower is brilliant, love this idea. Thanks for sharing 💛
ok this apartment is so incredible. The spatial flow, the use of vintage pieces, the smart color scheme, the soul, the very fine architect who lives there.. just love! Thanks for sharing NTS.
I love this apartment, especially with how thoughtful and authentic it is to the owner/architect's ethos. His living space is a true reflection of his taste and personality. Wonderful episode as always, NTS.
This is the reason I’m subscribed to this wonderful channel. Love what he’s done and wouldn’t change a thing!
Love this. Highly personalised, great for one inhabitant & dog but with a fabulous terrace which, let's face it, is where you'd hang out when friends drop by. No need to use an (inconvenient) Murphy bed. Amazing style in a small space. Very much my style. (And a Perriand cupboard in the kitchen!!!! wow).
I love this apartment and this tour. Thank you NTS.
What I'd change:
1. The owner has a toilet and small sink. I would convert the toilet in the WC to a toilet tank sink (a toilet sink combo). Preserves space, saves water, and allows for a larger sink surface area; but that’s their personal preference. Make that the sole hygiene sink. Add a better mirror inside and good lighting in there. Keep the beautiful tile in the shower and vanity, maybe build it out 20cm for more privacy, but in place of a sink out in the main area's vanity put a sit/stand desk in a mid-century wood. Add a MCM rolling shutter to close off the workspace when not in use.
2. I also liked a suggestion below to add a hidden projector screen whose cover matches the wood tones of the apartment. :)
Something about this video gives me hope for our future of living small. Bringing history, style, and comfort into a place for one. I often think about whether we should live alone as cities become more compact, or whether it is our responsibility to share our space and resources. I too live alone in a crowded city. I appreciate this man's beautiful work. 😍
Most comfortable sofa I've seen on a NTS episode so far!
Breathtaking, organic, elegant, tasteful and functional. Everything I could ask for in a project like this. Outstanding.
I don't have the budget that most of the people on this channel have, but I watch for ideas that I can adapt to my space and budget. So I appreciate seeing someone use Ikea furniture and give it an upgrade. I can do that!! 😊
Edit...I LOVE those yellow tiles. I know that a lot of people don't like yellow, but it's one of my happy colours, and the yellow that Jacobo has chosen here is gorgeous!! 💛
This is one of my favorite NTS episodes. The colors are so warm. It feels full but unencumbered. It’s lovely!
My favorite too!
This space makes total sense. If I had that same square footage, I would be proud to be as brilliant as this man!
Elegant and functional, More warm and cozy. This is one of the most beautiful NTS.
This apartment feels like a home and not just a project. I love the mix of old and new furniture and the warm colours. The way the apartment is designed is so clever; it gives you a sense of space and the terrace is a true jewel. This is one of my favourite apartments. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Love this space so so much! Have so much respect to Jacobo for his love in mid-century modern (without painting them.) and the idea to “give second life for things and buildings”. Thank you for such a great episode, NTS!
It’s beautifully designed that’s why everything works so well. It’s quality ❤
Reminded me why I love MCM, beautiful mid to dark toned wood and the mustardy yellow tiles! The tiles! A man with impeccable taste clearly.
This is absolutely genius on so many levels. The IKEA + (insert item) = unique piece is one idea I am definitely stealing with pride.
34sqm rectangular layout is quite a challenge, and he makes it so good that it feels a lot bigger and spacious
Gorgeous colors! Lots of takeaways from this one. I wasn't too sure about the "outdoor" shower but in that corner it just fits in! and that terrace is lovely.
This is one of my favorite ones ever!
While I love the creative use of space in all of the homes you feature, most don't feel welcoming, cozy, and lived in. They also generally lack warmth and color. Not this one! This is absolute perfection in design, color, warmth, creativity, and style. Bravo!
Lovely apartment Jacobo, especially like the Danish dark wood furniture and mustard yellow tiles. Clever use of space and a lovely balcony.
Love his home and especially his Ron! 🖤🐶🖤
Ron is the best! How he is standing there when they open the door!! lol!
❤ his furniture collection and the way he's incorporated pieces. Stunning. 👍
Mid-century and a terrace!? It has all the winning elements! It makes a very elegant space.
I feel like this space has it all, comfort, style, chatacter, inspiration, uniqueness! The terrace is beautifully decorated too!
Especially loves the classic color palette of the room
I love the kitchen, the midcentury look of things, well done.
Wow! Every time I go to a new video, they get better and better. I loved this apartment. I liked the mid century furniture, the wood, and the yellow tiles in the shower room and terrace. I especially loved the cabinet above the sink in the kitchen. All the colors work beautifully with one another. So cool.
no words other than this was such a beautiful escape of a video into this beautiful man’s life and his beautiful house ❤
The design is more than just beautiful. It's a lifestyle of independence and balance. Focus on what I really need and let go of the rest. One man, one dog, and one apartment. We really don't need more than this. Seeing his life gives me so much hope to carry on.
Genius design and philosophy. Those beautiful tiles! The dining nook with the chaise seating is so clever. And the terrace! Adore! Mui bien, amigo.
So much character in such a limited space. It's a beautiful space, it really serves as a demonstration of owner's style and taste in furniture.
Such a lovely and well thought out apartment. Also, kudos for Keith Jarrett's "The Melody at Night, With You" on vinyl 👀💞
the 'uniform' wood color throughout this house made me a little too happy. and those mustard tiles! such a warm, inviting space, as if it belongs to an old cottage or boat. love it.
I love the space, the renovation, the balcony is brilliant! A lot of thought, time and collecting (wonderful furniture!) has gone into this project and the execution is sublime. I'd kill for this outdoor space!
Un placer de contemplar esta pequeña vivienda, con toda su esencia. Encantada con este capítulo!
I don't think words can express how much I love this place, from the furniture the tiles everything is so beautifully put together.
So smart to reclaim area for outdoor space
I mean this as a compliment. This space makes me feel like I'm inside a train or a boat, I love it.
Oh this is beautiful! Not just because I love MCM :D It's just right for him and for where he lives
I love this appartment except that there is a lack of daylight in the kitchen. Something that Mr. Valenti can't change. I love the warmth, the colors, the natural materials and the simplicity.
Maybe if you installed a skylight in the kitchen?
This is my new favourite apartment! Exactly in my style, the mix of old and new, warm and organic, practical and romantic. I have dreamed of having an apartment in Eixample, and this is like my fantasy come to life. Bravo, Jacobo!
Best space till now!
Me ha encantado muchísimo. El tío tiene excelente gusto. La regadera abierta es muy sexi. Love it !
I absolutely love everything about this apartment. It's warm and cosy yet airy and spacious all at once. It's a faultless design.
You can't fool a good dog. Ron is obviously living his best life -- and we can see why. Such comfortably creative use of space, incorporating pieces that have significance for the owner and making quietly surprising use of space. This one is a lasting favorite.
There are very few of these spaces I would actually like to live in but this is definitely one of them. I would use a smaller bed but he's a big guy 😊. Beautiful and what a view!
Love the balcony space...
Warm, elegantly layouts BEAUTIFUL!
This is on the top 5, one of the best projects shown here!
You had me at Mid-century! 😍 Beautiful apartment.
Thank you for this video. Who wouldn't live in Barcelona.. so by showing us this amazing apartment it's like living the dream.
Btw the whole feeling of the apartment is like you are in a sailboat.
Mid-Century is my favorite design style. It’s so easy to live with and the clean lines never grow old. Such a unique and cozy apartment.
Probably one of the best meticulous designs so far. Love it! Proficiat!
I could totally live in that space 100% ❤️❤️❤️
Never thought that a mid-century look could be so enticing and cozy. And to see how it is mixed with Ikea product - a winner! This is a definitely one of my favourite! 😘
I especially love how he managed to fit a practical and comfortable looking couch area into such a small space. Many small apartment designs I see have no real comfortable space to lounge and watch TV or read or enjoy the space.
This is NTS at its best! Gorgeous!
that danish low storage unit is so beautiful, great apartment
Absolute gem! Love his style.
Loved it.
Every detail is so well thought and created for his indulging or functionality.
It a home tailored for him and Ron.
