I had version 2 of Hawk. I loved the detail of this figure with those camo pants. Great review!
Seems like Hawk mastered the politics of senior level military officers pretty well.
Hawk was kind of introduced in "Arise, Serpentor, Arise" when Flint explained to Beach Head the chain of command. I thought it was neat how they used this somewhat unknown character, promoted him, and made him the leader, along with Hasbro recognizing popular characters and remaking them every few years.
Anyone who read the comic knew he was the leader, so he wasn't unknown, he was heavily used in it since the first issue
In the late '80's hair dye became a Joes best friend.
Hawk's facial features remind me a lot of Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise.
Hail to The King ;)
Can't wait for you to look at jetpack Hawk
I've been on a big kick, watching dozens of your reviews over the past two days.
Thank you!! i'm honored that you took the time to watch them.
Double thumbs up for reviewing one of my two favorite characters! The hair color deal... I do believe there was more than one version of blond Hawk, but I personally prefer him with the darker hair. I have most versions of Hawk, and really can't decide which is my favorite....
One of my favorite GI Joe's. Had wished Hawk's holster could have held his pistol also. I use to give Chuckles holster to Duke and General Hawk. Nice touch with the West Point History. It's an incredible place to visit. Great review as always and the intro's tone was befitting the Commander of GIJoe.
+Alamo Patriot A Black version of Chuckles' holster would have been perfect for Hawk. I would love to visit West Point. I rarely make it that far east, but if I travel to that area, I'd love to check it out. In the intro I was feeling a little like George C.Scott as General Patton.
Love the file card artwork!
I always just assumed that he was in his 40's, started to go grey and dyed his hair to avoid looking old to the younger men in his command.
excellent review my friend I had this one despite the big helmet he still a good figure one of my favorite ones
+M.G.Villan It is an excellent figure. I just think the helmet makes him look like Prince Valiant.
HoodedCobraCommander788 yea he does kind of but I agree with you about the hair color man he should have been blonde
This Version will always be my quintessential look for me for General Hawk aka Claton Abernathy although my major exposure to G.I. Joe was the cartoon at first despite knowing there was comics I was never able to read them then when I finally did they were great and for me every time Hawk would speak I keep thinking the voice to be that of Charlton Heston I do not know why but I guess that voice just fitted Hawk for me no matter what.
HCC788..you've never yelled more than when reviewing General Hawk! Very commanding but also very loud!
yeah V1 hawk didn't stand out much for me when i was a kid he was just another one of the green shirts for me but that was ok because i liked the green shirts there good army builders but as far as an officer go's there was nothing that made him stand out and now lookin back his head mold and paint apps look kinda like eminem LOL. now on the other hand V2 hawk was perfect representation of a general the part i liked the most was the bomber jacket gives him a WW2 throw back look today i sport mine with a 1.18 scale willys jeep from the elite force toy line and man with that WW2 style jeep and hawk new V2 WW2 style threads it looks like it was meant to be but like you said the back pack was just to much a general like hawk just did not need a rucksack because he would be in a jeep.Humvee.A.P.C or a tank or be on base but still a good add on tho top notch video on one of my favorite action figures keep up the good work !!!!!
+no name here Haha- eminem. When I was a kid I didn't even know the figure that came with the MMS was supposed to be the team leader. He doesn't look special. V2 is a big improvement. You're right, he does have a throwback look.
+no name here I agree with you. The V2 version of Hawk (cartoon Hawk) is a much better representation of the character (design wise). I didn't get into the comic until the late 80's, so I never quite liked his blonde look.
sonic360
yup i agree
Oh, a GI Joe WWII line with all of the characters dressed in WWII gear with file cards would be amazing. They could even reimagine COBRA as a preCOBRA Hydra type organization but with WWII inspired gear & uniforms to avoid making COBRA an Axis power. They would desire & fight for world domination & be at odds with the other major world powers. Think how bad a$$ a WWII area cobra military with its soldiers, sailors, special ops, fighter planes, bombers, subs, ships, tanks, APCs etc... would be.
V2 always stood out to me more as a leader. Nothing really set v1 apart from the rest of the team.
In my early play (age 5), Flash was the leader because he stood out.
I never had V1 so the hair change never bothered me. He was one of my favorites Joe's though.
Speaking of hair you and V2 Hawk have a similar hairstyle. Yo Joe!
Cool, good ire about hair color. General Austin promoted Hawk to Brigadier General after he was hurt and could no longer protect the team from the Jugglers. GI Joe was shut down and Hawk was with the Jugglers in the empty PIT, under Fort Wadsworth, trying to convince them Cobra was a real threat when Cobra attacked. Jugglers died, remaining Juggler(s) authorized the reassembly of GI Joe with Hawk in charge. It was Flagg's funeral in 23 (Duke - Senior Enlisted, and Roadblock were introduced), then Hawk was promoted to General over a year later. Closer to two years.
Excellent!!!! Hawk was one of my favorite figures I had growing up. Loved his fatigue color but like you said that helmet could have been better. Can't wait for more videos. Especially with this ensuing blizzard coming my way. Ha.
I just picked up this figure complete with the correct pistol , so it was fitting that I watch your review. Nicely done, I am so glad that I found your channel! I found it through the guys at Retroblasting and GI Joe Burg.. you have them to thank. I have spent the last couple weeks watching all your videos..they are all awesome!
I've only ever had version 1.5 of Hawk from 1983. So that's my Hawk. Maybe someday I'll pick up the 86 version. Great review as always.
+Jason Luttrull Thank you! I do have a question, though: When you were a kid, was it obvious to you that V1.5 Hawk was supposed to be the team leader? I skipped that figure because I didn't notice he was supposed to be the top guy. Nothing about the figure stood out.
I knew he was the leader because I had been reading some of the comics.
good stuff as always!
+phillip powers Thank you!
LOL! Let's not forget Grunt v1 won his battle with his receding hairline when they released Grunt v3
One of the best and most nicely sculpted figure in the entire line. As a kid, I could never make this Hawk. Its just different. I had Hawk get killed...this was Eagle, his successor and superior. He looks MUCH more like a Joe leader than the generic blond guy that Hawk was anyways.
Loved Hawk and his no-nonsense attitude. It’s a shame what DIC did to him. Great figure though.
We're whippin' the scales off them on land, sea, and air!
V2 is the best version of Gen Hawk. I thought the camo fatigue pants/bomber jacket look was cool and very appropriate. I cut the trigger guard off my Hawk's pistol to fit his hand better.
I never thought much of Hawk when I was a kid but now I think he's pretty cool as for hair colour changes I hated how they changed Dukes hair colour for TF so much that I want to put a v1 Duke head in place of the TF one
With his hair color change it is hard to tell him apart from Roadblock ;)
You made a good point about on confusing Tiger Force Duke and V2 Hawk.
I never realized this version had the face of Carey Grant
Very nice figure. Very "army" looking figure.
Low Light went through a lot of hair dye.
+affoster79 I thought about bringing Low Light out as an example. They clearly designed an entirely different character and just gave him an older character's name. There is no way that's the same dude.
Great Review as always and thanks for knowledge about General hawk but should have compared him with the 25th or 50th anniversary model like when u did with Beachhead
+Zed “D” Kaizoku I don't collect modern figures, so I don't usually compare with modern versions. Only when I happen to have one.
+HoodedCobraCommander788 yeah your vintage collector i totaly understand... I use to have the vintage but I have the 25th & 50th anniversary design which is a huge improvement of it anyway keep up the good work with those reviews but you made General Hawk kinda of bad guy or a jerk if you read more comics on him you would know something the discussion he takes are risky but he will follow his man to battlefield no matter what and his easy going going depending if the GI joes who trust their leader no matter what
Angry over hair color. V2 of Hawk is far superior to version one in every respect. It's all brand new. The first version of Hawk shared parts with like 5 other figures, and didn't have any unique parts. The backpack is cool. Excellent figure. That, we agree on.
HCC, thanks for clearing that up. A cartoon of Hawk being promoted would have helped. You have a good tongue for argument, I am sure that you are an asset to The big OK.
+Byron Kellogg Well, I am a lawyer, so I'd better be good at arguing. :)
HoodedCobraCommander788 Lol.
V1 hawk had brown eyebrows, he was obviously dyeing his hair blonde.
Great review as always! Speaking of 1986 figures, how about a review of the 1986 Viper? I'm interested to see your opinion, as it seems the Viper can be slightly divisive in the fandom, with regard to the classic Cobra Trooper.
+Marshal I'm thinking of saving that one for Cobra Month 2016.
+HoodedCobraCommander788
Good enough, I look forward to it!
I think it just me but I focus better studying watch your videos!😂
Congratulations, it is a great review! I have a carded figure of Hawk '86, and it actually comes with The Chuckles pistol
Great review, I got this one on my radar for the collection at some point soon, the hair color is an annoying inconsistency but what can you do, I do prefer the V2 Hawk personally.
+TheSkullReviews Yeah, it is better. The '82 Hawk was pretty generic. No unique parts at all.
Don't get me wrong, I still like the early 82-83 stuff myself, Rock 'N Roll being one of my all time Favorites, just given that I never had the 82 Hawk and I only want one for the collection, V2 is the winner.
05:00. Not essential? Sir, just about everyone in the Army gets one or two ruck sacks and several duffel bags to carry your gear in when you deploy. Regardless of rank. That's like saying a civilian doesn't need a suitcase because he's a company CEO!
It's a _hairpiracy._ 🔍🤔 😆
Soooo Your 50/50 on this figure
I really want to like this figure but that hair is a deal breaker. It's a shame too because the head is really well sculpted and would look great without that dorky helmet but I just can't get past it.
They did a great job of sculpting a realistic face that DIDN'T look anything like Duke but they fumbled it. Add the bed pan helmet and you've got a figure that I'm not really eager to pick up.
Also, when he took of his helmet in the 1987 movie was his hair black? Am I misremembering?
+JayFamous13 I believe he did have black hair in the cartoon. But most of the time it he was wearing the helmet, so you only saw a little dark hair around the edges.
My theory about the hair color is that GI Joe characters like all of us are human. We get older and when we get older our hair color changes especially in males. I have blond hair in my early twenties but now in my mid thirties its a dark brown with some flicks of white (cringe). Same could be said for Hawk and Duke. I think Hawk was a young colonel when he first commanded the Joe Team and over the years it changed probably due to stress in a command position. Just look at Obama over the past couple years if you don't believe me ;)
+affoster79 That's a fair in-universe explanation, but I would still prefer consistency between versions.Or maybe adding a little gray hair for older characters would be cool.
Hasbro did that with the 25th anniversary Gen. Hawk giving him a salt and pepper look. We're also getting a Tiger Force Outback figure with a white beard in the GI Joe Club FSS this year.
The one figure that always bothered me was Frostbite. How do you go from having a black beard to being a ginger in under four years?
+affoster79 lowlight. v1 blonde v2 black v3 blonde lol
File cards after 1985 were stupid...it was all some silly personality story, mostly telling how they were born with the special skill that their character had...boring. The original file cards were great for telling their expertise and training...I wish GI Joe had kept that. However, when you read those early filmcards...everybody had Ranger training! So Stalker wasn't the only Ranger!
Dude looks like Mark Ruffalo am I the only one to see this ?
