The high Falsetto is Drummer Roger Taylor who is just stellar
It's an amazing debut album. The next one is even better, Queen II - one of my favorite Queen albums.
"Keep yourself alive " one of the BEST rock songs EVER ⚠️🎸🎶
""Listen like thieves " • KICK ➡️ INXS ❤️🎶
@emeraldhaze Not one of the best rock songs ever, it's not even really a rock song.
Blessed to see them Boston garden A Day at The Races Tour ...
Freddie Mercury Greatest Singer of all time!
The summer of 1973 was still the early days of "Glam rock" here in the UK. One day I was listening to the radio, and the DJ said "Well I suppose it had to happen. This is a band called Queen, with a song called Liar". It's next up....
First time I heard this we were hitchhiking to Cali from Arkansas and a guy in a VW bug picked us up in east Texas and blasted this from the 8 track for a 4-5 hr ride. We couldn't get enough of it.
I always liked "''''Keep Yourself Alive" The phase-shifter " effect on the guitar was used alot in the mid 1970's
Roger Taylor (drummer) sings all the super high notes. The way their voices blended together was really unique and special.
Roger is awesome, they all are but I really miss Freddie 😢 R.I. P. You are missed 😢 💔
And Freddie
not just roger
This G5 To A5 was Roger, but Freddie and Roger mostly sang high notes together for harmony. BTW is exactly the same notes that Freddie does on Under Pressure going from G5 to A5, you can hear how different their voices sound on those notes.
Taylor has a great singing rock voice.
@@MrJohnnyDistortion yes he does
Queen !!! 👸 Let's Go !!!!
Greetings from Oregon. Saw Queen in '75. These cats did 7 costume changes in 1 hour.. amazing
Queen had some fun albums. Queen II and Night at the Opera are worth a listen. Another great selection and reaction.
I concur! Queen II is my favourite, Night at the Opera probably second.
Thank you I have not heard this for far too long
Since this first great album stands out, I think, the strength of QUEEN, the incredible vocal work!! Harmonies, choirs, and Mr.MERCURY!! What else say? I was lucky enough to see them 2 shows in Argentina in 1981, and it was impossible not to admire FREDDIE on stage. One of the greats in history!! 👑
I saw them late 70s twice. Fabulous 🔥🔥🔥
I saw the in 1985 in the Magic tour in Barcelona. I was 16. Since then no other concert I saw was as good. One of the best live bands ever.
@@joanmanuelroig1758 Totally agree Joan!! 👍
Thanks Verdy, When you think about it, We had all of these Rock Bands, who were completely Individualistic of one another, using their unique musicianship to record, then go out & put on a show. So much talent & dedication. Keep it going!
It's Brian May's work that
distinguishes the early stuff
& makes it rock. 🤘
Saw them on that tour, they were immense already in their sound and their fame soon followed. Side 2 is just as good. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎹🎶
Kudos to you for doing this one
Yes, they are much more than their hand full of hits
Do Queen II sometime
In the same vein as this one but much more mature in their songwriting
A worthy follow up to this one
Nice one, Verdy!!
i have always said that there is better songs on the albums than the singles released but they probably would'nt be so popular to the mainstream public, although their singles on the whole were fantastic the main body of work was so diverse, complicated and intricate with immense arrangements, they really were a fabulous band of musicians and it always makes me laugh when i see some clown say they are over rated 🙄 i was lucky enough to have seen them twice in scotland in 79 and 82 and they were an amazing live band 👑✊🇬🇧
I had the pleasure to see them live at Reunion Arena in Dallas 1980
I see got someone from Texas too
New Haven with Billy Squire opening
When this first came out there was nothing comparable out there
You've got to listen to, "SHEER HEART ATTACK", ITS AMAZING, SO FANTASTIC! SO DIFFERENT ..Their 3rd album released 1974 🎉🥰🎸
Totally agree CAROL ANN!! 👍
Sheer Heart Attack was brilliant, listen to all the albums through to Day at the Races . Then listen to most of the rest 😉
I second that! It's my favourite Queen album. It will melt your brain.
Greetings from Oregon. Absolutely agree.
Gotta be Queen II next surely! my fave album (I'm biased)
Jazz and News of the World are great albums
I think this is every bit as astonishing a first album as Zeppelin I. It’s so ambitious and technically proficient. It’s not quite prog, it’s like half opera, half drag show after party. The dynamics and ideas just come out of nowhere. Zeppelin had the the blues as a strong template. I confess I have no idea what led these lads to create this. It’s like Zeppelin that didn’t exist yet, with ELO that also didn’t exist.
Brilliant. Would love if you continued through their first 5 albums just like you did with Led Zeppelin. There's some incredible stuff and their development is fascinating
Queen had so many hits that most of them never got radio play. Radio can overkill so many songs that you just tire of hearing them..aka bohemian rhapsody, we will rock you…..
This is the sound of a band finding itself. A great fun, first album. You can hear them trying out sounds, beats and vocals to find a perfect match, which they very quickly did.
Their heaviest and best album.
Without a doubt, the best Band ever, nothing comes close. 🇬🇧🏴
I vividly remember the first time I heard the opening track. It was played on a British TV show called "The Old Grey Whistle Test". It was played with an accompanying animation of a train running down the tracks. I was blown away. I went out and bought the single the next day. Never heard of them before that moment. The album wasn't even out yet. Brian May's guitar was so unique even on that first song.
My favourite Queen album... beautiful girl too ..great reaction
This when they were a pure Rock band
Hard Rock bordering on metal band even.
Thank you 1000 fold for this reaction..... nobody else has reacted to this like you, Thank you.
Their absolute BEST is "Live Killers"!!!...After you've caught up, of course! So glad you're starting at the beginning, THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE! THANK YOU!🙏
✌🌎❤
Verdy, you’re amazing. You appreciate the greatness of all K-pop artists, singers and dancers and how amazing they are, and going from that to classic rock, prog rock? What? How awesome you are! You got this album! It should be no surprise, though, because you got yourself exposed to Yes, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream; they were all inspiration to our friends from Queen, all of them! I can stop smiling at you and your reaction. Verdy, AWESOME! AWESOOOOOME! You awesome!! 👍🏽👏🏽
Just a fantastic first album still listen to this forty years later
Fifty years later😉
I’m so excited you’re listening to this! Their first record is pretty heavy metal and it surprised me the first time I heard it. 🔥
You should check out their song “It’s Late “ or the whole News of the World album
VERDY, first let me say a huge thank you to you for reacting to one of my favourite albums of all time! Side two is also great, and from there you must continue your journey: the first four Queen albums, while maybe not as well known as the rest of their career, are all EPIC, espcially side black of Queen II! Looking forward to your reactions on these great early Queen LP's!!
Yes, you nailed it. Those albums are the core of my favorite stuff they ever did. Just wacthed the fantastic live show from the Rainbow in '74. 4 stars! They were already one of the greatest live acts in the world.
First saw Queen at the Top Rank Suite in Liverpool in '73. This album had just been released and they were the support act for 10cc! 🤪 We were watching from the balcony and after their set the band came up to watch 10cc standing next to us 😀
Only hardcore Queen fans listen to this album. Nice pick.
Probably the first three.
@@CAdams6398 Probably their first three (or four) are their best?
I love their first six albums, but "A Day At The Races" just pips it for first place. An unusual choice maybe, but that's just me!
@@CAdams6398 My fav too. The melodies and the subtlety.
@@notthistimenet Precisely!
Doin' Alright - one of my top 10 Queen songs off all their 16 studio albums. How it never got decent airplay is beyond me.
Imo one of the five greatest debut albums. Got to see Queen twice.
YaY 🥰
This reminds me so much of how I used to experience new music:
(Put on the headphones so I can hear every detail)
I was a 9 year old kid when I heard this album and I LOVED it. Fell instantly in love with this band.
I used to sing all the high parts too but I can't do it anymore 😖🧓
I got Queen 2 for Christmas a couple years later and that is definitely one of their best albums 🔥 all the early Queen stuff was marvelous. But after The Game,
they kinda lost that magic and became just another band on the radio. A Day at the Races is also one of my favorites. Exquisite from beginning to end. Thanks for this Verdy I really needed this diversion cause I am still grieving from the devastating tragic loss of Jeff Beck.
p.s. - on My Fairy King, that insanely super high note is the drummer Roger Taylor he could wail like a pissed off woman haha 🤪🧐🌹🤯
Sounds like cowbells in the background on “Great King Rat”, but it could be bottles or something too. Such a great album. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Cowbells
I miss Freddie.
Nice one to check out since it doesn't have any of the songs you know on it. Was fun for me, too as I haven't heard it in a long time. I'll have to get the album out and give it a few plays again.
c'était le groupe préféré de mon papa à chaque fois que je les entends je ne m'en lasse pas ^^ bonne continuation Verdy bonjour de France :)
Really enjoyed this one! I really love the first 5 albums of Queen, you've got a lot of good music left to discover. 😀
When i was a young teen i would put vinyl on and headphones and listen to this over and over and....
When autotune did not exist yet, mind you. When singers had to be able to sing, and musicians actually needed to make music.
So talented, all of them
When I think of inaugural albums to introduce you to what might be in store from them in the future I think you could see their ambitious nature right from the start. Intricate song structure with Freddie’s theatrical tendencies make for magic. And I just love Brian Mays tone with his guitar. This band had all the main ingredients for a very fruitful and successful career. You know i would have loved to have seen Freddie grow old and singing some of the American Standards. He could have rivalled the likes of Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. A real Crooner.
Great band. Interesting to hear them evolve and change.
considering this being Queen’s first Album it was an epic opener for their career, once you have done Queen, you must follow on to Queen 11 and then Shear Heart Attack all this and they haven’t even spawned Bohemian Rhapsody at this point in time. I grew up on these first 3 Albums before Bohemian Rhapsody catapulted Queen into Super stardom never to look back, but these Albums are the roots of Queen to come
All the albums before Day at the Races I always listen to differently cause that’s when the band was still hungry and fighting for their spot in the US
everyday i look on youtube and hope she's done Queen 2, but i'm still waiting, she'll love Queen 2 and sheer heart attack 👑✊🇬🇧
A-day at the races , A night at the opera. superior Queen albums to this one
Queen are one of those bands that constantly reinvented themselves. They moved from one sound to another every few years, and always introduced newer aspects to their current sound. Freddie came out in 1975, which led into the best Queen era for me, the mid to late 70's. You could tell Freddie was just happier in his own skin, and more playful. It was also the end of the era where Freddie played piano in the studio. As good as he was, he was self conscious of his own ability, and hired a session pianist to play pretty much from around 1980 onwards.
Freddie still played piano in the majority of their songs from 1980 onwards...It was mostly during live concerts where they had Spike Edney play some of the piano parts so Freddie had more freedom to walk around on stage.
Freddy Mercury and John Farnham = best singers in rock/pop ever. And as for Brian May with his Red Special guitar...what can i say? Queen was unique, as was their songwriting. Just legends...Greets from Germany as always. Stay safe! Have fun!
Ok, Verdy. Wow. I am IMPRESSED by you! Girl, so much respect.
I am a first time subscriber of your channel, and a long long time Queen fan. I just watched this video, my first. I couldn’t believe ny eyes when I saw the thumbnail. The whole album? The first one?! What? You know how badass and awesome you are for reacting to this album? Like the comments said, “only hardcore Queen fans listen to this.”, 100% agreed. And not many people get it and feel it. You felt it since the beginning of “Keep yourself alive”!
I agree with other comments here, too, please continue reacting to Queen; I wish you could react to all their albums, but I know there’s so much music out there. Maybe the first five, like you did with other bands. There are musical surprises and gems in all the albums that deserve to be discovered and reacted to, though.
I can’t wait for your Queen II reaction, especially “The Fairy Fellers Master Stroke”! 😁 And “Bring back that Leroy Brown” on the 3rd album; “Seaside…” and “Lazing…” on the 4th; “You take my breath away” and “The millionaire waltz” on the 5th one. We will all be waiting.
Way to go, Verdy. Congratulations!! Bravo! 👏🏽 🎉
WOW I just realized that Fairy King is the Seed for Bohemian Rhapsody
So glad you're reacting to this, my favorite band. Maybe you can check out Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull and the debut from Crack The Sky soon.
The instrument you're referring to at the beginning of 'Great King Rat' is a cowbell. It looks and sounds similar to a real cowbell.
Heard this in a small shop just after it was released as a teenager wandering the mall when even malls were new. Stuck around for the whole album and since we were too shy to ask the person in the shop what it was they were playing, rushed to a record store and started combing the new releases for something that looked like what we heard. Fortunately that shop started playing it as we left and we were hooked. Imagine hearing this when it was truly like nothing else... which it remains today. Great choice! Thanks.
I followed you on your Zep Journey, you are going to enjoy your Queen trip
So glad you're doing some early queen. Takes me back to when I first discovered queen for myself at 15 yrs old. Listening on my Sony walkman whilst everyone else was listening to pop in 86.
Simply, Love 😍. Thank you for this magic moment
I have read several reporters that no Queen album is like the previous one. But it always sounds like Queen, even if you've never heard that Queen.
That high note on "My Fairy King" that you were asking about...that's Roger Taylor, the drummer. He can hit even higher notes than Freddie can (though Freddie is still my favourite singer).
And, by all means, listen to Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, & A Night at the Opera. Those are the best Queen albums.
Freddie could sing higher notes then Roger. The notes in my Fairy King is a G5 going up to an A5. That is exactly the same notes Freddie does in Under Pressure. Their voices just sound very different on these high notes. Freddie's high notes often don't sound that high, because he had more weight on his voice.
I think that might be Freddie playing the cowbell on Great King Rat he is known to do that from time to time and this album was recorded on a converted farm, LIAR on side 2 is still one of my favorite Queen songs
a night at the opera was recorded on a converted farm but not this album, this was recorded in de lane lea studio during the night and early hours, roger said during recording breaks they would sit and look out the windows watching the hookers working! 👑✊🇬🇧
@@johngraham5996 your right think i had one too many drinks before i posted
The first 4 albums are the best!
A very good album as all the first five albums
I still remember going out and buying this album in '73. I heard Queen play Keep Yourself Alive on the radio just prior to this and it really impressed me. Not disappointed by the rest of the album either. Strangely, I did not buy any more of their albums after this. I had a thing at that time for not wanting to follow bands that were successful!
The drummer, Roger Taylor, sings the high notes and backed Freddie a lot of the time.
Really fitting that Brian May is now a Knight of the Realm.
This is a fucking masterpiece my friends. Queen and Queen II are a fantastic start of Queen in the world music. Later, they was and are the best music band of the last Century.
One of the greatest 1st albums ever made
Great Album!!!
Thanks for your Queen album reaction ❤
オレ、クイーンの中で一番好きなアルバムです。炎のロックンロールのギターが最高。
Wow.
John Deacon: bass in all songs
Brian May: backing vocals electric and acoustic guitars in all songs, co-lead vocala in Keep Yourself Alive, piano in Doing Alright
Freddie Mercury: Lead and backing vocals in all songs, piano in My Fairy King
Roger Taylor: drums and backing vocals in all songs, co-lead vocals in Keep Yourself Alive, tambourine in Keep Yourself Alive and Doing Alright
Keep Yourself Alive _ May
Doing Alright _ May and Staffell
Great King Rat _ Mercury
My Fairy King _ Mercury
I can't tell why, because I don't remember, but this was the first Queen album I heard and owned. I NEVER heard them on the radio until their third album came out. I already saw them in concert 2-3 times by then.
Amazing reaction. Love it.
What fun !!!!!
react to queen II
One of my favorite things that some drummers play is the cowbell
The start of a legendary career
I don't remember buying this album when it came out. I think the first one I bought was Queen II.
I'd heard some of the songs from this on the radio.
I ended up most all of their records eventually through the seventies and into the eighties.
If you really want to get to know Queen, circumnavigate their big hits and dive in. The depth is endless.
Greetings from Oregon. Not in a great mood. But music is what my 23 year old cat and I love. Saw this post and we like you. So, hear we go. Thanks...(forgot your name.. sorry).
I was blessed with having an older brother who collected many hard rock albums in the early 1970's. There probably wasn't a rock album he didnt have (except perhaps KISS and Van Halen albums). Queen 1 was the first 70's rock album where I enjoyed in its entirety. Much like the 60's Beatles "Abbey Road". Or Pink Floyd's prog rock DSoM which came out the same year as Queen's.
Its very gratifying to see that 50 years later, young people such as Verdy enjoy listening to Queen, and many other hard rockers from the 70's.
IMO Queen 1 was one of the best ever British debut rock albums (yes, better than Zeppelin's, as I've never been a fan of self-pity Blues rock). Whereas Boston's 1st album was the best American debut rock album.
BTW If I'm not mistaken, it was guitarist Brian May who played the piano parts in "Doing Alright", in addition to the guitars.
_NEVER_ get comfortable listening to a Queen song, thinking you know where it's going. "News of the World" is their best album, IMO. Btw, those really high notes, were done by Roger Taylor, the drummer. He could've been lead singer in any other band.
Nice voice you have❤😊
Great reaction again, Verdy. As one viewer mentioned, those first 4-5 albums are all well worth a listen. I really believe you'll enjoy them all very much since you were so into this one.
Thx, that was fun, I will watch immideatly Nr 2
Roger ( drummer ) does those super high notes. Generally speaking.
Hi, new to your channel, always eager to support people who check out the deep cuts. Hope to see you tackle Queen II and maybe Shear Heart Attack in future. 😀
Dr. Brian May: (recently SIR Brian May) Lead guitar/back up vocals/piano sometimes. Dr of Astrophysics. Studied reflected light from interplanetary dust and the velocity of dust in the plane of the Solar System. Has worked with NASA. Made his guitar, with his father when he was around 17. It's called "The Red Special" Still plays it to this day at 74. He can make that guitar do some really amazing things!
Roger Taylor: Drums/back up vocals. Has a BS in biology. Epic high note vocalist
Both Brian and Roger have solo albums and could have fronted their own bands for their whole career. Having Freddie, Brian and Roger in one band? EPIC! They each do have solo albums but always Queen is their #1. Even today. Freddie had a couple of solo albums as well.
John Deacon: Bass guitar. Degree in Electronics. Inverter of the Deacy amp (which Brian uses to this day) Sadly John had a bit of a breakdown after Freddie's death and only performed with the rest of the band a 3 times after. He is only involved in the financial side through his attorney. He's been pretty much a recluse to this day .
And of course Freddie Mercury! Degree in graphic art and design. Designed the bands logo. Lead vocal, piano, guitar and of course his favorite thing to play is the audience. One of (if not THE) best rock front men in history!
The first song on this album was written before John joined the band. The 2nd song was actually a song that was written by Brian with the band "Smile" The band he and Roger were in prior to Queen.
Every member of Queen have written hits.
This album is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix & Led Zeppelin as well as the Blues, so sounds very different to all their future albums. Queen II is close but you are beginning to hear more of the 'Queen' signature sound. The third album Sheer Heart Attack is where it all truly clicks! Hope you do the whole Queen album journey it is an absolute ride that you will not regret. There are no bad Queen albums!!!
Great reaction. Alot of the harmonies you hear are actually just Freddie's vocals layered.
You know Queen just came out the gate, being Queen. The only identity crisis they had was in the 80's mids when Freddy was just out of his mind, but they came back again in style.
It sounded to me like cow bells being gently hit with drumsticks. I could be wrong.
i loved your reaction to 'doing alright, you were funny when the heavy bit at the end kicked in, Queen throughout their career on every album were notorious for tempo changes and key changes and i hope you go through all the early albums, some amazing stuff on them! on great king rat it's cowbells roger hits, keep up the good work, best wishes from scotland xx 🏴 👑✊🇬🇧
The high note is the drummer, Roger Taylor.
As much as you’re enjoying their first album, their second album, PARTICULARLY side 2 (the black side) is they’re masterpiece! I do hope you check it out one day!!!
