Visiting The Stone Trust Campus

- In this video I walk around the Stone Trust campus in Dummerston, VT. Most of the work featured in this video was done by Jared Flynn. I was in Dummerston to take a pre-certification walling workshop from the Stone Trust. The workshop replicated testing conditions for a DSWA certification, the instructors provided very useful feedback.

New England & England have similar natural landscapes & geologic history. Gather w/o the aid of modern machinery a lone man could spend a lifetime just building proper/safe walls or structural foundations. One thing for sure there is no lack materials. Being in the UK we just take these walls for granted. I have seen mason's repairing them and it is a black art as far as I could tell, not something I could accomplish.

On the other side of my family's house , there was an old many storeys building made of rocks which was amazing , and I it was a little bit scary to me when I look at it at night , the owners lived there for a long time , then sadly , it was demolished to build a new hotel. I never knew how the owners lived in that old rocky house and if they liked it .

How long would it take to build 10m of an average hight drystone wall?
A week maybe?
Are these stones placed by hand?
Yes
is it hard on the back?
How sturdy are these walls? If you were to body check some of those smaller ones would they budge at all?
You could probably make the little ones wiggle. I always nudge them before I step on them, I don't want to start a cascade of stone!
do these walls stay? or do they take them apart? to go?
The feature walls stay. There are training walls on site that are constantly being rebuilt
When are you notified re pass/fail certification?
I passed, they evaluated the test stints at the end of the day.

What’s your specialty: dry stone or masonry work?
I do a lot of both, not sure if I could claim one or the other as my specialty
On every vehicle there are too many cup holders. Well walls also should have cut holders. Leave a through proud and there is a place for your mead.
I did a thing with these guys, tried to swindle some nuns, got run off
I wonder if it would be profitable for you to hire someone to work in the quarry to supply you with material for you to use on jobs. I can’t see you having time for both.
