    Part 1, Chapter 6
Meursault wakes up late on Sunday and has a headache. Marie says he has a funeral face. Marie is wearing a white dress and Meursault calls her beautiful. As they leave they knock on Raymond’s door and he says he’ll meet them downstairs. When Meursault goes outside, the bright sun hits him hard, but Marie is happy and says what a beautiful day it is. Raymond comes down in a white shirt and straw hat whistling.
A day earlier, they went to the police station and Meursault testified that the girl cheated. Raymond was only given a warning. They decide to take the bus to the beach because they would get there quicker. Raymond motions to Meursault to a group of Arabs across the street looking at them; it’s the girl’s brother. Marie gets nervous, but Raymond just laughs it off.
They head to the bus stop and aren’t followed. Then they get on the bus. On the way, Raymond keeps making jokes to get Marie to laugh. When they get to the beach, they have to cross a plateau to get to the beach house, and Marie has fun using her bag to knock petals off of the flowers. They get to the wooden bungalow owned by Raymond’s friend Masson. Masson is a big guy with a short wife who has a Parisian accent. He tells Meursault that he and his wife spend every weekend there. Meursault hears Marie laugh with Masson’s wife and for the first time he really thinks he is going to get married.
Marie, Masson, and Meursault go down for a swim. The sand feels really hot and they have some small talk. They then go swimming. Marie and Meursault swim together out to deep water on their backs. After a while Masson heads back to the beach to lay in the sun. Marie and Meursault swim together, then they head back also to lay in the sun. Meursault watches her get out of the water, then she lays next to him, and he winds up falling asleep.
A bit later, Marie wakes Meursault up and tells him that Masson went back to the house. Meursault says he’s hungry, and Marie tells him that he hasn’t kissed her yet. They head back to the water and kiss while swimming.
When they got back to the house, Meursault said he’s starving and Masson says out loud that he likes Meursault. They eat a large lunch of fish, meat, and bread and drink a lot of wine. Coffee comes and Meursault is smoking a lot and his head hurts. Everyone is talking about staying on the beach in August and sharing expenses. Marie says that it’s only 11:30 in the morning and everyone is surprised. Masson wants to take a walk after lunch, so Raymond, Meursault, and Masson head back to the beach as the two women take care of the dishes.
As they are walking on the beach, the sun and heat is unbearable. The beach is empty and Masson and Raymond are talking until Raymond mentions something and Meursault looks up and sees two Arabs in blue overalls walking towards them. Raymond says that one of them is the brother. As they get closer, Raymond says he’ll take one and Masson will take the other one; he tells Meursault to wait in case a third one jumps out.
They all stop walking and one of the Arabs makes a move but Raymond hits him first. Masson jumps in and with one punch knocks the other Arab flat on his face. Raymond strikes his again and draws blood. He tells Meursault to watch but then Meursault tells Raymond that the Arab has a knife. In that moment, he slashes Raymond’s arm and his mouth. The Arabs then back off and start running away.
Masson says that there’s a doctor on the plateau. They get back to the house Raymond goes to the doctor and Masson and Meursault tell the girls what happened. Masson’s wife starts crying and Marie looks pale, so Meursault just sits and smokes a cigarette. When Raymond comes back he is bandaged up but doesn’t look happy. He decides to go walk on the beach again and Masson and Meursault want to go with him, but he tells them not to. Meursault follows him anyway.
They walk for a while, and the sun is overpowering Meursault. At the end of the beach, they get to a little spring. The two Arabs are there, one is laying down playing a reed and the other is standing, watching Raymond. Raymond sticks his hand in his pocket and asks Meursault if he should let the guy have it. Meursault tells Raymond that he shouldn’t shoot him without reason and that he needs to draw his knife. Raymond starts to get worked up so Meursault tells him to give him the gun and Raymond can take on the Arab man to man. Meursault says he’ll shoot if he draws a knife again.

    Here's the rest!
Raymond hands Meursault the gun and as the sun shines off it, Meursault realizes that he could either shoot, or not shoot. At this point the Arabs leave and Raymond and Meursault go back to the house. When they get back, instead of climbing the stairs to the house with Raymond, Meursault, being at this point almost crippled with the heat and the sun can’t find the energy to climb the stairs, so he walks on the beach again.
Meursault walks across the beach and with every wave his head is pounding and eyes are hurting in the heat; he walks back to the spring where it is shaded and cooler. When he gets there, Raymond’s man is back.
This time, the Arab was alone lying on the sand in the shade. The Arab sees him and puts his hand in his pocket. Meursault stops and does the same. He doesn’t move, and they stay this way for some time. Meursault realizes all he has to do is turn around, but the sun is too much so he takes a step closer to the spring. His head is throbbing in pain and his cheeks are burning, so, even though he knows it’s stupid, he steps forward again. They are only a couple of meters apart, but the Arab, without standing up, draws his knife.
When the sun strikes the knife it blinds Meursault. At that moment, Meursault is consumed by the pain of the sun and the heat. He’s sweating a lot over his eyes and it feels like he is being stabbed. The hot air and everything makes his whole body tense up, to the point where his finger tenses around the trigger and the gun goes off. At that moment, Meursault “shatters the harmony of the day.” Meursault then takes the revolver and fires four more times into the body. “It was like knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness.”
